Title: My 4 year old now has his first firearm...
Post by: ericire12 on February 27, 2010, 06:52:19 PM
..... A Winchester Model 62

His Great Grandfather brought it by today to pass it down to him. Its a great little gun. Not a safe queen by any stretch - it has put a lot of bittles on the table over the years - but its in about 75-80% condition. Its a handy little rifle. It shoulders very well, the action is wonderful and it has a very nice trigger. I must say I am very glad he brought it by cause I know I will have a great deal of fun with it until its time for my son to take ownership.... I cant wait to get this thing to the range. I got a feeling it is gonna be a real shooter!

It was great to see him get the chance to give it to my son. Its something to see how much joy grandparents get out of their grandkids, but with GREAT grandparents its just on a whole other level. I can not even imagine how much it meant to him to get to hand that rifle down to his great grandson. It was also cool because my 4 year old totally gets it. He completely understands that it is his gran dads gun and that one day when he is bigger it will be his and that one day he will get to go hunting with dad and use it.... it was great!

*The serial number is 329XX.... anyone have any idea about year of manufacture?

THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was sure it would have been a "G" gun..... ;) Sounds like a great gift and family heirloom, regardless of condition.

P.S. would love to see a picture.

I have a Taurus model 62 that holds fond memories. Though I got mine at 18, and it wasn't my first. They're great rifle. Sounds like that boy is gonna be raised right! ;D

Nice Eric, the old winchester pumps were great, note: they do not have a disconnector, so if you hold the trigger back while working the forend, it will shoot, every time. Sometimes fun, but something to be aware of.

My first gun was a stevens single shot .22rf, at 6, got me in trouble, and unfortunately in the end, an uncle used it to commit suicide. I really don't miss it.

How damn cool - a new rifle from the hand of his own great Grandfather. That is awesome!!!  I hope there are pictures or videos as I would not expect a 4 year old to remember this day. But what a legacy.

According to the site linked below, serial numbers starting with 32900 was circa 1936. You can go there and enter the whole number and get specifics.

Very cool story, thanks for sharing.

I am appalled, how could you even consider giving a 4 year-old his first gun? >:(

He should have had one at least 3 years ago  ;D

*turning to look at tt who is standing with his nose in the corner*..
I still drool over models... male ones who are scantily clad..  ;)

Nice gun eric.. but the nicer thing is the sentimental part behind it.  :)
