Title: Service Rifle ***Where to Begin***
Post by: scott.ballard on March 03, 2010, 06:07:54 PM
Hello,

I'm looking for a good upper for an AR to use in the Service Rifle competitions and could use some help with where to begin.  I have a very good lower which was previously used for scoped work and I'm hoping to make a few mods to save some money.

Does anyone have any experience with these rifles?  If you could point me towards the right people for a good upper that meets the rules, I would be truly grateful!

Thank you,

Scott

First of all you started off with a weak platfom with the AR. go with 308 upper to start and work up your loads from there.

I thought service rifle competitions were supposed to be 5.56/.223 AR's? The .308 hasn't been in our service rifles since the M14 in the 60's.

Scott,
For a good upper take a look at http://www.jprifles.com/ (http://www.jprifles.com/) JP enterprise's line not sure if it will save you any money but their top quality. I think they specialize in competition AR rifles.

Thanks for the direction.

I like the .30 caliber for battle rifles and if I'm heading off to a bad place I'll grab for my AK first.  For the Service Rifle competition I'm pretty sure I want to stay with the 5.56 AR platform.

I do appreciate your help!

Stay Safe,

Scott, my 1st choice would be accuracy speaks, Derek is a competitor and a top notch smith for the whole package, trigger, barrel, sights etc..., Fulton Armory is also top quality, White Oak armament is also great, as is compass lake. I am an M1a man myself in this competition, but have now built an AR, as to 600, with the right package, excels, I hate it, but the record book shows the truth. With the right combo. The cool thing about the AR is you can build it yourself, and I mean really accurate, but these guys won't do you wrong.

Best of luck, love US service rifle.

Another good choice would be John Holliger at White Oak Armament.  John built me a custome DCM upper and it shoots like a house afire.  Way better than my abilities for some time to come.
