I've often wondered this. What is the value of a gun sold on the black market.
In this case I'm talking about run of the mil hand guns. revos, more common autos... etc
Are they worth more or less then the "going rate" on the legal market?
your thoughts
-
My guess is less.
It's second hand and has likely been reported as stolen.
I see two types of buyers. Those who cannot legally purchase and those who can but don't want a paper trail.
Each can try for a buy from a private citizen and avoid the legal hassle.
The illegal buyer will pursue stealing his own weapon if the price it too high.
The legit buyer will keep looking.
-
It also depends on the weapon's history. If its stolen, or has previously been used in a crime, the value drops as most potential buyers anticipate that they might come into contact with the police.
FQ13 who still thinks its a good question

Well, what if the guns are from across the border and never sold in the US? Those would be worth at least law enforcement prices (especially full auto weapons) if in new condition and without any paper trail.

If you have one, post it in the classifieds. I sure won't tell. ;D

Depends on supply and demand.
If it is a state/country with easy legal availability, the price is less than gunshow price (equivalent of used trade-in value).
If it is someplace with highly restricted access, it is a premium. I do know that in Haiti post earthquake guns were going for roughly double MSRP. Glocks were a grand, AR's were two.
Just like drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and every other .gov regulated item.

I think it all depends on the gun.
A 'hot' gun is usually sold for way less because of the 'hot' status.
However, I have heard of guns selling for 2 to 3 times their actual value if the gun is not stolen.
I was approached at work once by some out of state contractors that were doing some work for the company. They had been inquiring around about folks who might be 'know' about guns. They ended up being sent to me. They wanted to know if I knew where they could by some "cheap" guns (think Hi-Point, no, not knocking the gun). They were from Texas and said they could sell a $100 el-cheapo for $300 or even more to gangs back in Texas.
I dis-associated myself from those guys in a fast hurry.

If they were from Tx. why were they trying to buy guns in Ga.? I mean hell, assuming you can pass the background check you can buy a trunk load of whatever you want. I guess they thought it would be harder to trace. Idiots. The federal form is, well, federal and it takes two phone calls to put a cop on your phone line. Wise to avoid them Peg, no amount of money is worth that kind of trouble. Plus they were scumbags.

Basically, they were looking for cheap, face-to-face purchases. I doubt they could have passed a NICS check in the first place.
Me want no troubles with the law....I like my guns.

You know it weird you say that. It just occured to me that that's one of my greatest incentives to obey the law. Its not like I'm planning on a crime spree or anything. Its just that if I've gone out and had a few, I'll sober my self up by saying "If you ever want to drive again, you'll call a cab now, because if you have to ask, no you're not ok to drive". Likewise, other, more felonious temptations (most of which would fall under ATF or DEA purview) are squelched with "I like guns, hunting and being able to vote". Its interesting that the fine/jail time isn't the big detterent here. Its the threat of the permanent loss of liberties we use everyday that does. I'm wondering if its just me, and if not, can we learn something about how to make laws?

Wait, wait, wait,...I'm relying on a shady gun seller to tell me "Oh, yeah man it ain't hot"... Please.....
The throw away pistol, is and will be available. Even in Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit, Georgetown, Boston, LA, etc,....the lower down the line you go, you can get what you want.
The premise of trusting any of these folks, to tell me "it ain't stolen",....and give me a fair price. You can get a pistol for $75.00, that might be worth $500. Cause its stolen and being sold by a meth/crack/player/scumbag....
Or you can spend $200 for a Davis .380, that won't work...
Dangerous and last time I checked, possession of a stolen firearm, is a felony? Remember the movie Godfather? When he broke the pistol up into pieces and dumped it into several stovepipes???

Here in Tejas, they usually go for 50% under value, as the perp wants to drop product fast, either to buddies and or going to a local mall, an dealing out of his trunk, special guns like AR's or AK's might go for more 75%, but the perp wants to get out quick. In special circumstances, they might be providing to high level illegal immi's, gang members, and might get a premium. But that is going to be 110%, not as much as you might think, the idea is steal it and sell it. Probably for drugs, but in certain situations,, for a cause, be it gangland, or gang related. and they are buying with a cause, scary if it is, on purpose.

Or they're just cheap bastards. Yeah, I just shot a cop with this gun, but I'll sell it for $100 rather than burying it 18 feet deep, cause surely the criminal I sold it to won't roll over on me. ::)
