Title: Gun Fight Rules
Post by: saltydogbk on March 16, 2010, 10:18:07 AM
I copied this from another forum, but I thought it was good so here it is...

Clint Smith, Director of Thunder Ranch, drill instructor. Here are a few of his observations.
On tactics, firearms, self defense and life as we know it in the civilized world:

The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I was going to a fight....I'd choose a rifle, a shotgun, or an RPG instead.

The two most important rules in a gunfight are:  always cheat and always win.

Every time I teach a class, I discover I don't know something.

Don't forget, incoming fire has the right of way.

Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets.  I may get killed with my own gun, but he's gonna have to beat me to death with it, cause it's going to be empty.

If you're not shootin', you should be loadin'.  If you're not loadin, you should be movin', if you're not movin', someone's gonna cut your head off and put it on a stick.

When you reload in low light encounters, don't put your flashlight in your back pocket.  If you light yourself up, you'll look like an angel or the tooth fairy...and you're gonna be one of 'em pretty soon.

Do something.  It may be wrong, but do something.

Nothing adds a little class to a sniper course like a babe in a Ghilliesuit.

Shoot what's available, as long as it's available, until something else becomes available.

If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid.  That's ridiculous. If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid for.

Don't shoot fast, shoot good.

You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or use any other word you think will work but I've found that a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much the universal language.

You have the rest of your life to solve your problems.  How long you live depends on how well you do it.

You cannot save the planet.  You may be able to save yourself and your family.

The purpose of fighting is to win.  There is no possible victory in defense.  The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either.  The final weapon is the brain.  All else is supplemental.

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5.  A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers.  The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?'  The ranger responded, "Because they don't make a 46."

6.  An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.

7.  The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm.  "Sheriff, I see you have your pistol.  Are you expecting trouble?" "No ma'am.  If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle."

8.  Beware the man who only has one gun.  He probably knows how to use it!

9. Thunder Ranch will be here as long as you'll have us or until someone makes us go away and either way it will be exciting.

If you believe in the 2nd Amendment, please forward this.

Thats pretty well covered by #3. I carry a GUN because a cop is too heavy.

I read about an old Texas Ranger named Charlie Miller. He carried a 1911 with the Grip safety tied down, one in the chamber, and the hammer on half cock, and instead of using a holster, he just stuffed it into his waistband. Someone asked him at a banquet once  "Mr. Miller, isn't that dangerous"
He replied "Son, if it wasn't dangerous I wouldn't carry the damned thing!" ;D

Not to mention that a cop isn't required to function in a capacity to save your life. Don't misunderstand that statement as a bash against the LEO. Just that I realize that no one has any obligation to put themselves in harms way to protect me. Kind of an odd thought since I DO feel an obligation to protect someone from harm simply because I have the capacity to do so.

No one has a LEGAL obligation to protect anyone.  Moral obligations, such as you feel, are much more meaningful and valid....except in a court of law.

Quote
Rules for a Gunfight
Anonymous
1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap - life is expensive.

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket."

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.)

19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gun fight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than "4".

25. You can't miss fast enough to win.

Actually, the first rule is ..... DON'T BE THERE

Avoidance is the best defence in a gunfight.

I don't go out looking for trouble but I got a bad habit of not wanting to back off of it when it shows up. Some times you just have to stand up to it if you have no other choice, but  use your head.

Well hell, if there are no rules for either a gun fight, or a knife fight, then I want one of these!

The Defender’s Creed
by John Farnam
I accept and understand that human predators
exist. Criminal or terrorist, they take advantage
of our civilized society to prey upon the weak.
They represent evil and must be confronted and
defeated.
I believe that self-defense is a moral imperative,
and that illegitimate force and illegal violence
must be met with righteous indignation and
superior violence.
I will not rely on others for the security of myself,
my family and my community.
I proudly proclaim that I run with a like-minded
pack. I do not amble through life with the mindnumbed
herd
will train with my chosen weapons, maintain
them and carry them in a condition of readiness at
all times.
I will be mentally prepared and physically
equipped to effectively respond to an attack or
emergency.
I will constantly test myself against realistic
standards to discover my strengths and
weaknesses. I will turn weakness into strength.
I will seek to learn new skills and techniques, and
then teach what I have learned to other members
of the pack.
Be it with firearm or blade, empty hand or blunt
object, I will hit my enemies hard, fast and true.
I will live a quiet and unobtrusive life, but I will
develop and retain the capacity for swift and
decisive violence.
I recognize that I am the modern equivalent of the
traditional Minuteman, and that I may be called
to service at any time against heavily armed
enemies. I will respond effectively.
I accept that I am a pariah among some of my
countrymen, and a quaint anachronism to others. I
will not hold their ignorance against them.
I will win, or die trying.
I swear this creed before God, my family and my
fellow citizens

John Farnam
