I decided Facebook was something I could do without and deactivated my account awhile back. Then someone used my name and password to reactivate the account without my knowledge. I used a 10-digit letter and number password and they still didn't have any trouble cracking it. I found out today and deactivated it again but don't like the fact that you can't pemanently delete your account. Whoever reactivated it can do it again, so if you get any Facebook messages from me, it's really not me.

Beyond hacking, there are also viral style apps/ads etc. and when you grant them access they can send messages for you. So your account itself may not have been directly compromised (by someone cracking the password and activating) but by an old permission etc. and they went through a big permission change over in their system a couple months ago.

What is Facebook?

It's not just facebook, my old email address suddenly started sending all my contacts Viagra ads....including my teenage son, co-workers, and professional business associates.
I had to close it, and get another one.
Nice security. >:(

that has been happening with Yahoo, MSN as well

I periodically check under the application settings and make sure that everything there is apps that I use. Also on hacked accounts usually you can change your password and that will most of the time take care of the problem. Issues with facebook not deleting your account that is different. I'd call facebook or write an e-mail or whatever to make them remove you from the server. You can also report yourself as being hacked to facebook and that would probably get them to remove you.
I don't know if anyone ever pays attention to it at Facebook MSN Hotmail Yahoo or any other email client that I use, but I always report any unknown (Phishing) account.
I think that part of the trouble with combating some of this crap is that people just ignore or delete without reporting and then they don't know that there is a problem until something crashes. I have had to teach this to most everyone I know
