Title: Comanche Moon
Post by: DonWorsham on January 13, 2008, 01:55:58 PM
Val Kilmer, Steve Zahn, Rachel Griffiths, Karl Urban, Linda Cardellini, Elizabeth Banks and Wes Studi star in COMANCHE MOON, a new six-hour mini-series based on the book by Larry McMurtry, and the final chapter in the "Lonesome Dove" saga to be made into a movie, will air Sunday, January 13, Tuesday, January 15 and Wednesday, January 16 at 9pm et/pt. Academy Award and Golden Globe Award winners Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana are the executive producers and writers.

I enjoyed the book, not sure what to expect from the mini-series. Hopefully, it will be as good as Lonesome Dove...

I've not read the books but I do have the original Lonesome Dove series.

This one is turning out to be not too bad.  Val Kilmer does a pretty over the top redition of his character but he is still likeable...seems like he's closer to a Teddy Roosevelt than anyone else.  Gus and Woodrow...you can see the characters coming out of them but they don't have the charm of Robert DuVall (his character in this and in Open Range were just awesome) and Tommy Lee Jones.

I agree...I watched about 20 minutes of it last night and just couldn't buy into it...the guy that  plays Gus I've seen in comedys and I can't get that out of my head. Maybe I didn't give it enough chance, but it's no Lonesome Dove.

It was bad enough, but the commercial interruptions made it terrible. I will not watch the remaining shows. Too bad, I prefer westerns to all other genre.

Agreed, not a Lonesome Dove, but then most aren't. I have a rule I call the 98% rule - 98% of everything is crap, you have to work to find the 2% not crap. This is especially true in entertainment - movies, music, etc., less true elsewhere.

Anyhow, after the opening massacre, this movie dragged for a long time, finally got interesting for about the last 30-40 minutes as the Comanches (under Wes Studi, good actor) mobilized for war, Scull (Val Kilmer) is hunting for and then captured by Black Vaquero, and the two new Ranger Captains, Call and McCrae, organize their men to search for Scull. I'll give it a second chance.

And less you al think I'm a network whore, this is the first network show I have watched in 4 or 5 years. And only because it was McMurtry's sequel/prequel to Lonesome Dove.

Well dang..You guys are making me sad..  :(  I was all excited about this movie.
I knew it wouldn't be a Lonesome Dove or a Dances With Wolves... ( I mean come on... it's hard to beat Kevin Costner and Robert  Duvall in anything..(http://www.cascity.com/howard/animations/95.gif)
but............ it can't be all that bad.. can it??

I refuse to watch a 2-3 part sequel until I have all the shows together. I set the DVR timers and will watch them all after the last one is done.
Now I am wondering if I will even like it.  :-\

I am a bit different than most of you guys when it comes to westerns.
If they are not correct in everything, I don't care.  I still like them. I watch movies to take my mind off of real life...... to forget about worries , and to kick back and be entertained.
Marshal ..on the other hand.. does the same.. BUT~~~~~~~ he will mumble things like.. "they didn't make that caliber gun then. "
or " That gun only holds ---- shots".. or "that Indian tribe never had anything to do with yada yada yada"...
sighhhhhhhhhh ::)
Like ..who cares? I just want to watch the movie.. enjoy what is in front of me.. and eat my popcorn...

So?? Guess I will give you my "professional female review" after Wednesday.

((I know I know.. You can hardly wait. right?  ::) ::) ))

A professional female review is worth waiting for, as long as we don't have to hear about Kevin Costner again.  :D

The gus character is not believable, and all the people have bright white teeth. Im no expert but its not period authentic either.

Sooooo, when Doc Holiday in Tombstone (also played by Val Kilmer) fanned his Bisley (??) and got off, what, 15 or 20 shots into one the McLaurys, Marshall didn't like that scene??    :D

I loved it! But I did comment on it. I did the same when Val shot 3 rounds with his double barrel shotgun without reloading. LOL

OK I gave it a second try....tuned out after an hour.  BORING!!!!  I won't give it a third try.

And I just tell myself that the never ending revolver in Tombstone was the multiple cameras showing the same rounds being fired.  I think Freud called that rationalization.

I thought the guy playing Gus was pretty good...well at least he has DuVall's manurisms and cadence down pretty good.  The show is ok, but I'm not going to buy the DVD when it comes out though.

As far as the thirteen rounds out of Doc's Revolver...guess I never counted.  Granted, any western with Sam Elliot I tend to let some details slide.  It's a movie, and even more than that it's not a movie that is trying to claim a well aimed .50 BMG round can bring a chopper down from 20 miles away.

I watched it all and must admit that I don't know enough about Western frontier history or day-to-day life to get the message. I understood the Lonesome Dove series and loved it. Apologies to all the Cowboys. I must all hat, no cattle. Mac.

Don't sweat it Mac. I've run cows, buffalo even, and I watched the whole thing too. All in all, I'd give it a 4 out of ten, where Lonesome Dove was a 10. Wes Studi was good, Adam Beach as Blue Duck did a creepy good job, esp. with the gold wedding bands from all of the people he has killed woven into his hair. The Gus actor grew on me, I thought he did better in #3 than in the first episode. But then I think we all would have a tough time living up to Robert Duval's acting.

Other than that, I lost track of what was going on occasionally with the various cuts and jumps from one plot line to another. And the cinematography , which normally was good, lapsed into Rifleman or Bat Masterson TV quality. That was a too bad, some of the locations were great.

My $.02

Adam Beach is a great, underrated actor, but I hadn't seen him in much other than his WWII films (Windtalkers and Flags of Our Fathers).

I'll wait to watch this, though, until after I've read the book.

He and Wes Studi did a couple movies that our local PBS station carried. I think it was something like "Dream Walkers." It was about a couple of detectives on a Reservation in Arizona.

Adam Beach is also on that Law and Order: Special Victims' unit

He just start this year?  Cool.

As for Kevin Costner - Open Range restored my faith in him.  However, I still can't forgive him for the relentlessly boring Wyatt Earp and the way he managed to completely BLEED off the quality of the rest of the cast of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Like... C'MON!  Robin's supposed to by DYNAMIC!  In the meantime, the rest of the cast are throwing in performances that make K.C. look like a deer in the headlights.

I know.. but he is just so nice to look at.......................................  ;) And I liked him in Field of Dreams and Dances With Wolves.

I love Sean Connery too.. even though it just brings Marshal straight up out of the sand box... because Sean is a gun hater.
I know all of that.. but damn.. that voice and that distinguished look... and face it.. He can act..
Yep... There are some out there that I just plain like for whatever reason..  :)

I know what you mean.  Personally, I love looking at Jennifer Connely, but upon learning that she's a "vegan" I realize that she is not in complete control of her mental faculties (or her nocturnal emmissions.   :(

I always like Sean Connery but he's another one of those guys who hates guns but made a great living shooting people in the movies. Anyone who does that is a jerk. At least someone like Tom Selleck isn't a hypocrite every time he makes a movie.

We finally watched C. Moon.
It was .......sighhhhhhhhhhhh.......... slow and boring in most areas and it jumped around way too much.
Just about the time I would "get into" a segment, they would switch it to something else. Frustrating..
And the scenes were not filled with much to watch.. so it looks as if they took a paragraph of content and strung it out to make a page..
I thought the Gus character at least had Duvall's mannerisms. That was a plus..
The best part was when Gus gave a knuckle sandwich to (Val Kilmers) wife at the end.
But even then she had no bruise, no red , no blood and just blinked and then smiled.
THAT was bad.. ( There is no way a woman that size could get a right hook by a guy and not be showing something in the way of pain..)
And the chemically white teeth bothered me.. even after being in the pit and eating dead crows and snakes, Kilmers teeth were bright white.
oh welll.... maybe the next western will be better.
And.... at least I hung in there until the bitter end.
You know, maybe if they had of done this one first.. and THEN made Open Range, it would have been better.
Naaaaaa.. probably not..  :-\

Marshal and I decided that he and Michael and I could have made and directed this better..  ;D

I seriously need to find an outlet for writing westerns.

The thing to keep in mind is that at least another western was produced.  Sure it wasn't the best but, to my way of thinking it was better than not having a new western at all.  I liked Gus's character (he really seemed to try and get Duvall's manerisms down), the costuming and weaponry was pretty good too.  Yeah, it jumped around a bit but I thought it was to have mini flashbacks to try and establish the characters in the storyline.  I liked comparing the people to the folks they were representing in L.D. and matching them up in this prequel.  It was kinda slow in parts but I enjoyed trying to pick out who's who and why things happened in L.D.

I just watched the remake of 3:10 to Yuma and outside of the guns and clothing was really Hollyweird in the directing and the storyline. I would rather have new movies made rather than remake after remake; there has to be some new ideas out there.
