Title: Wireless Router
Post by: SwoopSJ on April 05, 2010, 12:16:56 PM
My current D Link wireless router is getting ready to be put out of its misery, as well as my own.  It's gotten to the point that I have to cycle the power at least once a day and, needless to say, my patience for this crap is gone.  Can anyone suggest a good STABLE wireless router?  This is my second D Link, the first lasting a couple of years and my current one, I have owned for about six months.  I would prefer an N, but G would work also, the main concern is stability.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still using the Netgear I bought about 7 years ago....

No problems and I'm not network guru, just a guy with no patience for techy crap.  I buy it, if it doesn't work, I take it back.

Just because I've been using computers for 30 years (or more) doesn't mean I like them!

I had a Netgear that ate it's pigs about 2 days after the warranty expired.  Replaced it with a Lynksis that I've been using for the past 6 years without ANY trouble.

There is a new router technology I believe is referred to as N type.  It is supposedly VERY fast, allowing streaming video over the in house wireless network without degrading other transmissions.

I have not read a lot about it, just saw it was available.  It would take a router and network cards in your computers to use it.  Being new, I'd not look for it to be cheap...but if it is time to upgrade, you might want to consider this...particularly if you might have a use for watching video on a remote wireless pc.

I have no problems using my old, beat up Netgear router for video.  I don't even turn on my desktop anymore.  It just sits there collecting dust.  Mine is only a 54 mbs router and I've never had any problems, ever.  My laptop from across the house has always worked spiffy!

Once in a while, the picture gets a little hard to look at, then I realize it's the shine of the shaved head of a firearms instructor that's washing out the video!

;D If ypu have the $ I recommend Apple Airport (the squareish one).  My friend who maintains networks for the school local district highly recommends them as rock solid but not cheap. (about 7500 students).  I have found the newer cheaper Linksys stuff unrelieable.  The new ones just don't last as long as the old ones.  I guess they are like guns, you get what pay for.

I have the original Airport. I've been using it 9 or 10 years, since when they were introduced. Never a problem. The newer one may be faster, but I don't know if I'm fast enough to keep up.

NETGEAR.  I have 7 of them at strategic loactions in Eastern Iowa and Western Il.  Had problems with one of them Called about a month before the warranty expired and started a ticket and when their solution didn't work about a month after the warranty expired I called them and told them about it and they replaced it.  Other wise no problems and very user friendly to set up.  I have not however had a good experience from any Linksys router that I have had dealings with.  But that is just my problems with them.  Dlink and Belkin were easy enough to deal with but I like the NETGEAR the best.  I run at my house a MIMO N/SuperG

Netgear is usually a good choice. I've had the same Netgear G router since 2006 with only a few minor issues more the fault of our cable modem. I like the Linksys (Now Cisco) routers as well they have a reputation for being built to a more professional level but that's what Cisco is known for. I will also second the comment about Apple's networking products. They too have an excellent reputation, all be it at a higher price point. So take your pick but I think any of those will serve you well. Another one to consider would be Belkin. They use to make the best routers out there but I haven't really followed them as of late. I would say the best thing to do would be to go into a Best Buy or Radio Shack or OfficeMax and find the best deal between comparable Linksys/Netgear/Belkin in a N-series router. You won't go wrong with any of them.

Amazon will likely carry all of them and usually have many user reviews you can check out even if you don't intend to buy from them.

Several wireless Linksys  G-routers in use for years with no problems.  This is for my business and I am very happy with the life and stability.  These are the Wireless-G 2.4 GHz broadband types.

I just replaced my older, (6 years old), Netgear with another one, (N). I was having the same issues as you. I would have to unplug it, then replug it a couple times a day because it would "drop off". The new one's been running great, but the Netgear wireless adapter I got with it, that is plugged into Melanie's computer turns itself off at start up, (sometimes). I then have to unplug it, and replug it and it then works fine for as long as the computer is left on. It runs super fast. I've tried to resolve the issue with Netgear, but have had no luck. I have since found others with Windows 7 have the same unresolvable issues. It appears their drivers are not totally compatible with Windows 7.  Bill T.
