But one of the strangest was Operation Acoustic Kitty - which saw cats being turned into recording devices.
Microphones were implanted in their ears, batteries sewn into their bodies and an antenna in its tail so the puss could walk up next to Communists and transmit their conversations back. After all no one would suspect a cat.
Some $20million was spent on surgery and training the cats until the first one was finally ready to be tested. It was released to listen to two men outside a Soviet compound on Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, D.C. - but got ran over by a taxi almost immediately. The scheme was then ditched.
