Title: Hotels in Charlotte
Post by: m25operator on April 11, 2010, 04:14:24 PM
I have been trying to get a hotel/airfare package for the NRA annual meeting. It seems all the close hotels are booked, unless you want to pay in excess of 100 bucks a night. My needs are simple, 2 beds 5days and 4 nights. As close to the convention center as possible, does Charlotte have good transportation, buses, trollies etc... Any 1st hand knowledge from any locals would be appreciated.

Hope to see you there  ;D ;D ;D

I don't have any info on lodging but I've been to Charlotte a few times.  It's a lovely town and the access to the city is pretty good and easy to navigate.  Airport access from what I recall was pretty good and the locals are what you expect from a southern town, friendly and accommodating.

I never thought about lodging because if I go, I'll be staying with an old Navy buddy.

I do think, even though you're a Texan, that you'll enjoy the Carolina barbecue.......pretty darn tasty stuff!

time I was in Charlotte you could walk across the downtown in maybe 15 minutes. It may have grown, tho.  ::)

Bus's are OK but usually run on the hour,  They have the LYNX, light rail now, drops you off at 3rd Street and Stonewall, CCC location.

http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/CATS/LYNX/home.htm

CCC is on the southern end of the city, Tyvola Rd. South Blvd, Archdale, Monroe Rd. Lots of hotels a few minutes east on Independence Blvd. just don't be West of I-77, "totally different neighborhoods" on that side of town, and usually where most of the problems are.

There are also Bed & Breakfasts that might be offerring "something" reasonable.

I'll keep poking around and see if some friends can do some recon.

It's grown into a "mini Atlanta"...

My Dad just sent me the info for our hotel room that he found in Charlotte. I will send you the name and phone # when I can get access to my email (at work now), the price was reasonable and the room is really nice from what I can see on their site.

Camels are not allowed within city limits, so all of the caravans have to park out in the country.

Also, we have brick and mortar here now, so we gave up log cabins a few years back.

I live in Charlotte.   If you did not want to worry about parking downtown and hotels in town are a little on the expensive side.  You might want to look at Matthews, NC.  That is a little small town outside of Charlotte and within easy driving distance to the 485 train station.   The price I think is $3 for a round trip ticket.  Or like $6 for an all day travel pass.  That will take you about 15 minute to get downtown with a few stops.    And it takes you right to the convention, Westin Hotel, and Nascar hall of Fame.
If you want to Mapquest how far a hotel is from the train station, there is a movie theater across the street and this is the address:
9541 South Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28273
You can try to use that.  That is the best I can do to help someone figure out how far something is from the train station.   It is also free parking at the train station.
But for people going downtown, a must hit is the Epicenter.  Right by the Time Warner Cable arena.   Right where the Bobcats play.  There are some fun bars and good restaurants right there.  Dale Jr, has a bar called Whiskey River.   There is a bowling alley, and some very nice restaurants in verying prices from Mortimers that has its menu at like $8 for sandwhiches, but not sure what they charge for drinks.  Blackfin is a higher end restaurant.   there is a good pizza joint and cannot remember the name.   There is Strike City that has 12 bowling lanes, 3 bars and good food.  Lots of big screens for sports too.   But those are some good places right in the Epicenter.  Might be about 1 mile give or take from the convention center.

I'll buy the first round for everyone at the Smokey Joe's Cafe on Monroe Rd.  Time for a Slimy Slider for those brave enough. Too bad they closed Loafer's,...BUT!!!!!

There used to be a Lil Gilley's 20minutes south in SC, but I don;t know if its still there.

Para moved to Pineville, right next to Matthews, Hmmmm... ::)

Wingate by Wyndham I-77 & Tyvola
   6050 Tyvola Glen Circle
   Charlotte 28217
   United States

This is the hotel I will be staying at, 2 nights for about $180 (2 adults). They might have some rooms left.

Another place to look is in Pineville.  I would say that is about 5 to 7 miles from the first stop of the Light Rail system.  There is a comfort inn and suites.  I could not remember exact date of the convention, but my wife who is a travel agent said they are charging about $88 a night there.   That can have easy connection to the light rail too.
If anyone enjoys a nice cigar, there is one place downtown to smoke since Charlotte's bars and restaurants are smoke free.  There is Cutter's in the Marriot downtown.  If you bring your own cigar, I thik they charge a $5 cutting fee.  which is not bad since some of the cigars there are a tad more expensive than what you would buy in any retail store.  But hey, they have to make money too.
There is a thai place called Basils.   Hooters is downtown too, right across from Marriot and Cutters.  Just incase anyone wanted to know.   There is also Dixies Tavern at the edge of downtown.   Howl at the Moon is a pretty cool place that plays music and has dueling pianos.
I will ask some friends on facebook for some other good places downtown. I will update more when I hear more.  If people do not want more info, let me know and I will shut up.

Try Monroe. Its a bed room community/suburb about 30 minutes South. Its a bit of a drive, but within comuting distance. They have a very nice Hampton Inn that looks like it was decorted by Martha Stewart on work release, complete with fridge, flat screen, wifi and a free breakfast bar including a waffle station. Rooms go for about $90 a night and it shouldn't be crowded.

University Research Park is right across the street from UNCC, (graduated from there), also right down the street from the Nascar Hall Of Fame, Hwy 29/49, and Harris Blvd, head south 20 minutes turns into Tryon St. to the Convention Center....

Marshal'ette, can I please bring that midget country band over? They were great...Either that or the guy who throws knives, and sings Elvis? ::)

Party Time,.....Party Time,......Party Time,.... ;D

And what says party more than a midget country band and a knife throwing Elvis impersonator? :o Seriously TW, I dated a girl who thought along those same lines. She was the reason for my one and only experience of being arrested, and damned near got me killed while riding bitch on her bike doing 130 on the Tamiami trail with her topless and me shitfaced and putting my hands in naughty places, not for recreational purposes, but just because I didn't want to fall off the damn bike. To quote Junior Brown "you're wanted by the po-lice and my wife thinks you're dead'. Been there, done that, and while I admire your spirit, I ain't partying with you sir, I am officially too damn old. ;D
FQ13 Who strongly reccomends the the song in the attachment. Junior Brown Rules. Pure Tx. truth and he won't be partying with you either. Instead we will sip Shiners and listen to the guit-steel. ;D
