Title: What did you kill your first deer with?
Post by: Walter45Auto on April 22, 2010, 12:31:07 AM
American Rifleman TV rerunning the top10 hunting rifles inspired me to ask. I killed my first deer with a Winchester model 70 in .270 Winchester. Borrowed it from a friend of mine, who was in the stand with me at the time.

The only deer I have killed is after I hit it with my truck I emptied my Walther 40 cal into it with gold dot hollow points.  Then a hispanic guy stopped and asked if he could have a salvage tag for the deer and my investigator issued it.

2 others I hit were killed by responding LE.

I've never done it. Is there some way to get mentored in? I have a pretty good idea how to take one down, but not how to stalk it and especially not what to do once it's down. There are actually deer around here, but no hunting. My dad was supposedly always pretty good at all of that stuff, but never really liked the taste, so he lost interest. He's moving to UT this summer and says he's going to get an elk. I might have to tag along.

Yeah there is a way to get mentored in.  The way I hunt looks more like I'm running a standard search pattern rather than stalking.  I know the signs to look for, but never really was taught how to do it properly because dad wasn't a hunter.  So, I'm basically a trial and error 'hunter'

Its actually pretty easy, assuming the area isn't overpressured and you aren't after a trophy, just a legal animal. I am an unapolgetic meat hunter and will cheerfully let you have a ten point buck in exchnge for a doe or spike, but that's a personal thing. The deal is this. Deer are big rabbits. The require water, sheltered bedding areas and browsing areas. They tend to travel the same paths at the same time of day. Look for game trails and tracks, hair on oaks, scrapes, scat etc. They like comfort. Sunny hill sides on cold days, thick stuff in wind and rain, prefer edges both of terrain and time of day. You will rarely see a whole deer. You will see movemnt, a horzontal line (uncomman in nature, a slightly lighter shade of dun etc.). Park yourself by a watering hole at dusk with a view of a game trail. Move slowly and quietly through bedding areas mid-day (paying attention to wind). Park yourself between feeding areas and bedding areas at dawn. The key is just scouting a bit before you hunt (if not in your huting rea, just in one where deer are common so you learn the game) and buying a good pair of binoculars (8-to 10 power). Look twice before you move and move slowly. Still drizzly days when the leaves are wet on the ground and the branches quiet (wear fleece and just get wet so you're quiet) are a gift from God. Practice a few weekends this summer and you'll be good in the fall.
FQ13 who will note this applies tho white tails and hogs. I have zero experience on Mule deer or Elk (Moose, I will leave to Palin as that is just too damn much work and my freezer isnt that big ;D).

Mule deer spike shot with a Mossberg bolt action .243.  That rifle has taken many a mulie, whitetail, antelope, and elk.  Loaned out a few years ago to a small girl of a family that hunts as the .270 that her father got her was still too much.  He scoffed, but she accepted.  First year she got her mulie, antelope, and elk with it, and has every year since.  Next year will me my son's first time to go out so I am going to have to go get it back. :)

It was a joint effort!   ;)

Me....Savage Bolt Action 30-30, my cousin Chuck....Winchester '94 in 30-30...

I emptied two mags (8 rounds) into him from about 100 yards and Chuck cleared the Winny as well..  Damn thing wouldn't stop!

I had the pleasure of skinning the damn thing, counted 12 hits...obviously we overreacted...  I was 14, Chuck was 13 or so!

Oh, and my other cousin Ron had hit him the night before from about 300 yards at dusk...

Not proud of that one but it's my first third of a deer.  Got a whole one the next fall with my trusty Savage...a button!

Winchester model 70 classic stainless in .243.  I've heard a lot of people claim that the .243 is not enough cartridge for medium sized game, but every deer I harvested with that Winchester required only one shot and ran less than 10 yards before collapsing.  I'm sure shot placement was the determining factor, however I have a friend that can't seem to kill a deer with less than 3-4 shots using a .270.   ??? :-[ ;D  I know a few others that are almost as bad, and they consider themselves good shots.  Pfft!   ::)

I have never taken one, however I have only been hunting deer a few years and have not gotten to go very often.

My buddy, however, killed his first deer with a fixed blade Gerber......... He was putting it out of its misery after it got hit by a car infront of his house. ;)

Remington Model 788 .243, 100 yrds while he was sleeping.  I have never had a problem with knock down power.  I  have even taken elk with it, It all depends on shot placement.

I have a 760 in .30-06, and I know exactly what you mean (never killed anything but paper with it though.). Plastic butt plates suck, but are better than steel ones in this case. I'm after a soft rubber pad for mine if I can find one.

From recollection, and this was about 40 years ago mind you.....we probably missed the neck and the whole right side, only one edible shoulder as Ron's shot went through the left shoulder and exited at an acute angle in the chest but missed the vitals.  He must have been shooting at an extreme rear quartering angle and downhill.  The buck came over the hill on three legs when Chuck and I opened fire.  I was quite suprised we hit him that many times and now that I've thought about it, I think my brother might have put one in him as well.  He's the one that flushed him out of the cedar swamp he'd bedded down in the night before.

Burger, good backstraps, neck roast and half a useable hide...'nuf for a pair of gloves or two...and of course, the heart and liver where in good shape!

I think the darn thing finally died from the weight of all the extra lead we pumped into it...  that and the round that Chuck put between his eyes for good measure.  Broke the skull and ruined the rack mount!

Dad and my Uncle Mike were NOT happy with us...

My dads custom Springfield O3A3, 30/06 of course, 180grn core locks. 4x Gibsons scope, He won it on a football pot, young 4 pointer at 75 yards, I had never shot his rifle before, and the trigger was 10x lighter than I was used to, so I got a very surprised trigger break, no time to flinch, shot was spot on. He was not there when I came out of recoil and I thought I had missed. It ran 20 yards out of my field of view. Thing was, I was recovering from a broken Femur, and at the last minute ( probably should thank Mom for this ) He asked me if I wanted to go, I thought I would just hang around camp and just be outdoors, but he gave me his rifle and said if I could get to his stand on crutches, then I could hunt. Crutches are fun in East Texas soil, especially since his stand was on a pond dam.

I will Never forget it  ;)

8 MM Mauser in 1963. I was 10 yrs old and it was my very first centerfire rifle. I shot a small Maine whitetail buck. I didn't hit where I was aiming, but it dropped in its tracks.

My father had the pair of rifles made for us by an old Maine gunsmith by the name of Chick Haw, the top one with the shorter LOP was mine and the bottom was his. I still have both of them and will probably be buried with them  ;).

I'll never forget what he said next......you shot it, you gut it!

Great memories and beautiful rifles.

Why not try to find a father and son who aren't able to have such a memorable pair of rifles and pass them on...

The memories are all you will need..and you can add the joy you have given the father and son to your treasure.

M1 Garand, 150 g Winchester Silver Tips.  Running shot at about 120 yards.  Right after sunup.

Second one was with an M1 Carbine.  I was actually hunting for some feral dogs that had been chasing the landowner's cattle.  But I had a deer tag, and when he saw me, he ran a little ways and stopped to look back at me.  Carbine knocked him flat on the ground.  He got up and ran about 75 yards, and was dead when I got to him.

Grizzle Bear

Who wishes he still had knees that would let him go hunting........
