Title: New Gun vs. Lessons
Post by: Paraguy on April 30, 2010, 05:24:59 PM
I am thinking of getting a new 1911 but had this thought in my mind that maybe I should put that money towards some lessons and training at the local range.  Lessons are cheaper than a new gun, but I could get the base model 1911 and some lessons or get the gun I really want and bag the training.  I have been shooting for about 5 yrs and seem to do OK with my common sense, what I read and learn on forums like this and the free pointers from others at the range (including the ranger.)
Any and all advice, experiences and suggestions would be welcome.

I am thinking of getting a new 1911

Does that imply that you already have one? Or, "New" as in my first 1911?

Lessons are always good, provided the instructor is worth his salt. There are many different methods of instruction, some work for some folks, some don't.

Be sure and do some research in your area for what you specifically want. Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, SD, Drills, IDPA, etc,...

I'm sure more valid info is forthcoming.

I'd say get the training if you do not have some form of Professional training already.

tom is right. Get training first, and save up for the dream gun later on. That's what I'd do.

As one of the training slogans of a training outfit goes...

Any gun will do if YOU will do.

Since you have guns, get the training.  Your effectiveness will improver more than with a new gun..

Well, if I were deciding between a suitable weapon and my Dream Gun, I'd hold out for the Dream Gun.

Buying a lesser item will only put the dream gun farther out of reach.

Make it your goal.  Keep it a priority.   Keep thinking of every way you can to reach that goal and be aware if everything you are doing that will not move you towards that goal and eliminate as many of them as you can.

Sooner than you think, you will have your Dream Gun.

Take care.
