Rep. Tiahrt Introduces Tough Border Security Bill
On Wednesday, April 28, true immigration reformer Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), along with Reps. Brian Bilbray (R-Cal.), Dana Rohrabacher (R-Cal.), Todd Akin (R-Missouri), and Ken Calvert (R-Cal.), introduced “The Secure the Border Act of 2010” (H.R. 5173). With violence along the border rising to dangerous levels (see FAIR’s Legislative Update, May 3, 2010), H.R. 5173 would implement a number of long overdue measures to secure our porous borders.
Specifically, the Secure the Border Act would:
Require the Department of Homeland Security to construct double-layered, reinforced fencing along the entire U.S.-Mexico border (§2(a));
Mandate the installation of additional strategic structures, roads, lighting, cameras, and sensors along the border (Id.); and
Create a border surveillance program that would continuously monitor the entire U.S.-Mexico border through the use of aerial surveillance technology, sensors, satellites, and other equipment (§4(a)).
Since the bill’s introduction, nine additional Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors of H.R. 5173, including: Gresham Barrett (R-S.C.); Vern Buchanan (R-Flo.); Dan Burton (R-Ind.); Trent Franks (R-Ariz.); Elton Gallegly (R-Cal.); Walter Jones, Jr. (R-N.C.); Kenny Marchant (R-Tex.); Sue Myrick (R-N.C.); Edward Royce (R-Cal.); and Joe Wilson (R-S.C.). (See Cosponsor Listing).
Rep. Tiahrt commented on why he introduced the bill: “The federal government has neglected its responsibility to secure our borders and enforce our immigration laws. Current and past administrations are all responsible. It is vital for our national security and economic welfare that we shut down illegal entry into the United States and get serious about aggressive border protection.” Tiahrt concluded: “We must put an end to the half million illegal immigrants who continue to come across the U.S. border every year. The Secure the Border Act is a dramatic step toward ending illegal immigration and making our country safer.” (Press Release, April 28, 2010).
FAIR has strongly endorsed the Secure the Border Act. FAIR President Dan Stein noted: “The Secure the Border Act demonstrates Congressman Tiahrt’s serious commitment to securing the borders and to the American people, who in poll after poll say they support increased border security as a solution to mass illegal immigration. His legislation clearly puts the priorities of Americans before those of special interests.” (Id.; See also FAIR’s Letter to Rep. Tiahrt, April 27, 2010).

The border should be patroled by well-armed Predator drones. We need to start taking our border serious.

I've a friend who was a teenager in Yugoslavia during WWII. The Germans effectively closed the border with a few troops and some well publicised executions at the borders. After a couple of weeks and a couple of dozen dead here and there the borders were effectively closed. The perceived fear of "certain death" is a great deterrent to that sort of thing when backed by a government or a political regime.

Rastus, that takes guts, this is America. Most of our politicians don't have any.

I am pretty sure you could get VOLUNTEERS to man the guard towers, they would even supply their own rifles and ammo. Just give them open rules of engagement.

I'm pretty sure you're right ;D But I think the border states should issue licenses like for deer or bear ;D

I don't like the idea of a bounty. Cutting their ears off seems so cruel.

Enough guys. You wonder why Desert Marine doesn't post here any more? Look, you all know I am pretty hard core on illegal immigration, but this is over the line. We all know you don't mean this, but others (newbies) don't. If you don't mean it, don't say it. And here, if you do mean it, we seriously part company. Lets just support Arizona and not get into the gutter. Just sayin'.
FQ13 who is not trying to be all righteous and does have a sense of humor. Still, there is such a thing as not shooting yourself in the foot over trash talk.

FQ, your "lets not offend any one" BS is the reason we have Mexican flags flying over American schools and Kids getting kicked out of school for displaying the American flag.
As for the Mexicans, F-ck em. If they belonged in a decent country they would have built one, but they didn't. They built what they wanted, a 3rd world shithole.
We were nice and left them some land in 1846, we should fix that oversight.

I guess I just have an odd thought process, but if we took over Mexico, wouldn't that make them ALL American citizens. I guess that's one way to solve the problem. Of course, the grass is always greener, so Canada would eventually be really ticked off. ;D

Glad to see you followed my thinking ;D
Something like that can become habit forming , and the Great Lakes would be a real challenge. (Is THAT why Chicago has more Mexicans than Mexico City ? )
Also, the border fence, (mine field and armed watch towers ) would be much shorter and therefore cheaper, if we built it on the Guatemalan Border. ;D
As for our "Friends" to the North
Bite me, eh .
