CLEVELAND – A U.S. immigration court has granted asylum to President Barack Obama's African aunt, allowing her to stay in the country, her attorneys announced Monday.
The decision was mailed Friday and comes three months after Kenya native Zeituni Onyango, the half-sister of Obama's late father, testified at a closed hearing in Boston, where she arrived in a wheelchair and two doctors testified in support of her case.
The basis for her asylum request hadn't been made public. People who seek asylum must show that they face persecution in their homeland on the basis of religion, race, nationality, political opinion or membership in a social group.
Her lawyer, Margaret Wong of Cleveland, said last year that Onyango first applied for asylum "due to violence in Kenya." The East African nation is fractured by cycles of electoral violence every five years.
In a November interview with The Associated Press, Onyango said she was disabled and was learning to walk again after being paralyzed from Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disorder.
Onyango moved to the United States in 2000. Her first asylum request was rejected, and she was ordered deported in 2004. But she didn't leave the country and continued to live in public housing in Boston.
Onyango's status as an illegal immigrant was revealed just days before Obama was elected in November 2008. Obama said he did not know his aunt was living here illegally and believes laws covering the situation should be followed.
A judge later agreed to suspend her deportation order and reopen her asylum case.
Wong has said that Obama wasn't involved in the Boston hearing. The White House also said it was not helping Onyango with legal fees.
In his memoir, "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance," Obama affectionately referred to Onyango as "Auntie Zeituni" and described meeting her during his 1988 trip to Kenya.
Onyango helped care for the president's half brothers and sister while living with Barack Obama Sr. in Kenya.

What a surprise! ::)

No politics at play there. No sir. No politics at all. ::)

It is the new immigration policy >:( Historically she wouldn't have been allowed in due to a handicap, unless she had pre-approved sponsor that could and would support her for life.

Those statements alone should provide enough fertilizer to keep the White House rose garden in peak condition for YEARS. I'm not surprised, however, I mean if good ol' Barry were to make a comment about the weather being beautiful, I'd be sure to grab an umbrella. Ugh, two more years. Just two... more... years. God help us, please.

The way they vet candidates, they know if you picked your nose in the fifth hour, of second grade, the day before Christmas break, and Pres. BHO can use a straight face when he says he "didn't know" >:(
With all the accusations over Pres. BHO's citizenship, everyone connected to the White House knew the legal status of every member of the Obama family for as far back as records go ... and then some >:(
If you clowns want to try and blow smoke up my A**, watch yourselves, because I'm going to drop a big stinkin' pile right between your eyes ;D

Now, no one here actually thought, that the president's auntie would really be deported. ::)

According to the Attorney General, Martha Coakly, there are "technically" NO illegal immigrants in Massachusetts.
Whatever that means...
the Governor, a few years ago, instructed the SP that they were NOT to try and determine immigrant status during any investigations. He issued this order late on a Friday afternoon so as to miss the weekly news cycle, a very typical political ploy perfected by the liberals.

She should have been arrested for not complying with her order to deport before she ran and hid then hired a scum sucking, no ethics, greedy, liverless lout lawyer.

She wasn't hiding, she lived in public housing on the States dime....

Yes she was sponging off the tax payers dime in MA. but I thought she left MA for MD after she was ordered to deport where she got the scum lawyer he sited hardship along with she feared retribution from the tribes in kenya hence she gets asylum. It is funny how fast Pres. "O"No keeps saying he had nothing to do with her case - I think I'm gonna be ill.
I don't believe anything that he says, he is also trying to explain as to why he has a SS# from Conn. he never lived in Conn. and during the time frame he says he got the SS# he was whopper flopping in hawaii, he and his admin. keep dodging or making up another story regarding why he has that SS#. Even the SS office says he shouldn't have that #. Who is this man?
