I'm going to get a Taurus Gaucho, you know the cowboy gun. My delimma is which caliber, .45 Long Colt or .357 Magnum?
The cowboy in my says .45LC. The practical side says .357 because my carry guns are .357 and my wife is moving to a .357 revolver (when I find the one she wants) AND I just ordered a Marlin 1894C lever action in .357.
But a cowboy gun should run with .45LC don't you think?
-
ABSO-FRAGGIN-LUTELY!
45LC IS the cowboy round.
-
I like big bores so take my advice with a grain of salt,.45 or if it comes in 44 spec. I don't mind .357's in a double action but single actions you gotta go BIG BORE ;)
-
BTW,I just got in a rossi 1892 .357,and am waiting any day now for my ruger flattop conversion from .357 to 44 spec. that dave clements is doing for me.go figure ::)
-
I love .45's, but the working man just about has to re-load to be able to afford to truely enjoy them. But they are an easy caliber to reload and you can load them pretty soft for plinking. If you want a cowboy gun, then you should COWBOY-UP Get the Big-Bore...... ;D

Well, it is all about personal preferences.
I have shot cowboy action for the most part using .45Colt. Lately, I have used my wife's .38s both handguns and a rifle and have to admit that I have as much fun using 38s as 45s.
There is not really a black and white answer to your question - 45 or 38. If it comes down to having a per definition "true cowboy gun", a lot of people will say .45. When I started to shoot CAS in the early 90's and at a time where cowboy action was not about a competition on a level as we see today, I just didn't think about options. For me, it just had to be .45, period. And I didn't have or needed any scientific argument either. Cowboy was about .45. Ok, we all know that back in the old days, they came in all calibers.
When shooting thousands of rounds a year and for the purpose of competing with the speedy cowboys and girls, it comes down to economy, recoil and fast realignment. Then the .38 is probably a better choice.
For recreational shooting and to have a per personal definition "true cowboy gun", go for the .45. You'll be happy with.

Thanks to everyone who posted. As I sit here with a .357 and .45LC in my hand, the decision is made. I want to be a cowboy! .45LC it is.
No competition, just fun shooting. If Outdoor Marksman Corp would only get them in stock, I can get 500 new Milwall for $137.50 plus shipping. I'm on a notification list.
My heroes have always been cowboys...
-
YES! 45LC will lay down the LAW. ;D
-
good choice 8)
-
Guess I'm the lone wolf here, I like 38's, they were good enough for Bill Hickok, and my reloading expenses stay down...
-
WymoreWrangler, didn't Wild Bill shoot Colt Navy 1851 .36's?
And weren't they cap and ball?
Gotta admire Wild Bill, though. He knew what he had and he knew how to use them. With his learned skill with the .36, no wonder he never went to the .44-40 or .45LC.
-

Back then they called it shot placement.
-
except the last day of his life ,he did'nt cover his six.

Don;
I have a Gaucho in .45 Colt, and it is an excellent gun! I love to shoot it, and one of these days I'm going to buy its parner so I can shoot it in SASS. Marshall Holloway has a lot more experience in SASS than I do, by the way.
I've begged Bob Morrison at Taurus to make me a .44 Special (or heck, even a .44 Magnum) Gaucho, but he points out that the only guys who'd buy one are me, John Taffin and three of our closest friends!

Picked up my Gaucho today. Very nice to look at. Click, click, click, click. Plan to do some shooting this weekend. Turns out my local FFL, Matt, and his wife participate in Cowboy Action Shooting. She brought out her Ruger Vaqueros (sp). They were quick to mention the local club.
All I need now is another six shooter, holsters, a rifle, a shotgun, a hat, chaps and spurs! Hmmm, think I'll go watch a few times first.
-
Congrats Don on the Gaucho....looking forward to your review. Just don't shoot your wrists off........you need at least one hand to type on this forum. ;)

Don, if your local club is like most clubs, just show up and you will be surprised at how many folks are willing to loan you what you need to have fun with....

Pathfinder, if I remember correctly, Wild Bill was known to have a pair of R/M 1851 Conversions in 38 Long Colt near the end of his short life. It would have been alot of shorter though if he hadn't had a good lawyer when he was tried for murder 14 miles north of me after the McCandless affair....

Got home tonight just ahead of the rain. Got a few shots in with the Gaucho. It is a keeper! "I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande...
At first I thought it was going to be too light for the .45s. No problem with one hand shooting (of course I was using those sissy cowboy loads).
If you don't have a six shooter, get one!

Hey Don - just curious - what finish did you get on your Gaucho? Thanx

Don -
Instead of the "Old Cowhand" song, try singing Royal Wade Kymes' "I'm a Cowboy" instead. It might be a better fit . . . :D

Sorry, meant Kimes. Ever notice how a bandaid on your typing finger gets in the way?
Here's the song:
You say you wanna be a cowboy?
Well, you gotta wear a hat.
I went out and bought me some brand new blue jeans
I think that’s right where it’s at.
And someone said “Cowboy Up!”
So I went down and bought me a brand new Ford pickup
Chorus:
Cuz I’m a cowboy
Yeah I’m a cowboy
I’m a rootin’ tootin’, sho nuf shootin’
I’m a cowboy!
Well, I thought I’d try my hand at ridin’
So I went down to a rodeo
I said that don’t look so tough
I think I can give you all a real show”
They found this here thing they called a brahma
They said Doomsday was the name of this here bull
I rode him 28 seconds
They’s a hollerin’ “Git off!”
I said “I ain’t no fool!”
Chorus
That Cadillac it’s pretty
Goes along with that purple hat
Them patent boots son, you just can’t wear ‘em
You need to see some Westerns
As far as I can see
That is if you want to be like me
Chorus

As recorded by Bing Crosby in 1936.
I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
But my legs ain't bowed and my cheeks ain't tan
I'm a cowboy who never saw a cow
Never roped a steer cause I don't know how
Sure ain't a fixin to start in now
Yippie yi yo kayah
I'm an old cowhand and I come down from the Rio Grande
And I learned to ride, ride, ride 'fore I learned to stand
I'm a riding fool who is up to date
I know every trail in the Lone Star State
Cause I ride the range in a Ford V-8
Yippie yi yo kayah
We're old cowhands from the Rio Grande
And we come to town just to hear the band
We know all the songs that the cowboys know
'Bbout the big corral where the doggies go
We learned them all on the radio
Yippie yi yo kayah
I'm an old cowhand Down from the Rio Grande
Oh where the west is wild all around the borderland
Where the buffalo roam around the zoo
and the Injuns run up a rug or two
and the old Bar X is just a barbecue, yeah
Yippie yi yo kayah
I'm a pioneer who began from scratch
I don't bat an eye in a shootin' match.
They don't call me Elmer, they call me Satch.
Yippie yi yo kayah
Yippie yi yo kayah
Get along little horsy
Get along little horsy
Yippie yi yo kayah, oh!

I guess Royal just updated it a bit - same thought.
And, as one who has seen plenty of south ends of north-bound cows, I must admit I am chagrined I could not remember past the first verse of Crosby's song. ???
-
And, as one who has seen plenty of south ends of north-bound cows
You know, Pathfinder, I'd like to mosey a few cows along the range...but only once and on the weekend and if food is included and it's not cold or raining or snowing...
My hat's off to those who do it on a regular basis!

All this cowboy talk is putting me in the mood for some beans!!

Great choice!! Did you get to look at a Polished Stainless by chance? If so, any ides as to how it might hold up for holster wear?
