Title: New (used) toy
Post by: Majer on May 30, 2010, 09:50:38 PM
Was out with the Wife the other night and stopped at Gander Mtn just to kill some time. Was looking at the used pistols and they had a Keltec P-3AT on the shelf for $199.99. I asked to see it and when I checked it out it looked unfired. Salesman told me the guy bought it and couldn't find any ammo so he traded it back in. I put it on layaway right then. Should have it in a week or so. And yes, I do know where to find ammo for it... ;D ;D

Gun porn to follow once I get it in my possession.

Nice find Majer, you know too well, I have posted my thumbs up about my "leetle" P3AT.  Good price to boot.

Likes lube, likes a little fluff & buff, likes a break in.  That's it.

I prefer the mag extension, your mileage may vary. It is what it is, an up close line in the sand defensive pistol, loaded with Cor-Bon, Speer GD,  or other top shelf  defensive ammo, makes it a very effective pocket pistol.

(That Ruger LCP copied) ;)

Congratulations!

1 thing I have discovered with my P32.  You have to make a conscious effort to remember you have it with you.
After always carrying 1911's or full size revolvers I find carrying the Kel Tec is just like not carrying at all, only safer.  ;D
(Be careful when you go to the PO. )  ;D

Agreed with all of the above. I hate, hate, hate the trigger. But that said, its a good gun for a great price and their CS is about the best in the business. I would send it in for the fluff and buff, it will either be cheap or free. Good buy.

Its 8 pounds with no break point like a Glock. Just slow and heavy and no way to know when its going to go BANG. Personally, I prefer being able to take up the slack and then know that putiing that extra (5.5 pounds in the Glocks case) will make it go boom. Its a just a personal thing. I would trust my life to a a Kel-tec and at $200? You can't even begin to argue with it.

I have the p32 and I believe that these types of little pistols have successfully replaced change in the pockets of those of us with carry permits.

eric, thanks for the links, I bookmarked them and will look them over real soon. I'm really looking forward to shooting this little pistol, it will make a nice BUG to my main carry gun.

FQ, What is this "Fluff & Buff" of which you speak? Is it a Factory service or is it something I can do myself? I have worked on most of my guns at one time or another and am fairly handy at gunsmithing .Thanks for the info.

Major, it's a general smoothing up of things.

Bascally its a little polishing. They offered to do it free for me at the factory when I called them and asked if they could lighten the 8 pound pull on my P-11. The answer was no to the trigger pull, but yes to the fluff and buff. They were extremely helpful folks. Next to Bond Arms in Tx., I've never met a gun company so willing to bend over backwards for a customer. I'd go and google kel-tec. There is an owners group out there that can give you the ins and outs on their pistols. I do have to warn you, and here I speak as an Obama voting Glock owner, that even I choke on the amount of Kool-aid these folks have drunk.  ;D Still, a very useful forum for any tech questions. I apologize for not remembering the URL, but its been a while. Good luck.

Its a reliability prep..... KT's machining is pretty loose so you will want to give it a once over before you start the break in process (50-100 rds of ball ammo) and knock off any rough spots. Is all pretty easy DIY stuff. Here is the full run down on what might be neccesary:

Thanks for the info guys, I'll tear it down once I get it and see what needs to be done.

eric posted the link to golden loki, the F+B is something you can absolutely do by yourself.

The trigger is long, because in essence, that is the safety. It breaks clean, but you have to damn well be sure to intentionally be pulling it.

The mag catch is not metal, and the tradition of inserting a mag with a bit of authority, will wear it out prematurely if you slam them home.

Generally, when inserting a mag, I depress the mag catch button, and release when seated. They do have metal ones available but they are tougher to find.

Good advice on the ball, FMJ break in, when you strip it down, watch for the little notched pt. 114, upper left groove of the frame slide. It can grow legs, and run away.  ::) it just sits in the grooves, but can be removed.

You'll see it.

Post a range report, at 3 to 5 yds. you'll overcome the "sights", or lack there of, real quick. But it gets hits and is consistent for combat accuracy.
