Title: Show n' Tell, Daughter and Guns
Post by: kilopaparomeo on May 31, 2010, 12:34:37 PM
This coming week is the last for my kid's school.  On Wednesday, the 4th grade class is spending the day with sort of a mega-show and tell.  They are to tell what their talents are and give demonstrations.  My daughter -- who is a talented softball player and musician -- what does she pick?  Shooting!

She cleared it with her teacher so early this morning she and I went to the range.  Haley loves shooting my AR15s, especially the .22 conversion units.  I recently built a dedicated .22 upper out of Spike's Tactical components...now she has claimed that as her own.

Anyway, she had fun mowing down rows of bowling pins and steel plates and I had fun loading magazines for her.  We made a couple of videos too but I can't get them to upload.

She is going to take in her targets and eye/ear pro along with pictures and maybe the videos.  My guess is that she will have all the class boys jealous.  How many other 4th grade girls spent the morning shooting ARs?  Also, gotta love small town teachers that understand shooting isn't some kind of anti-social disease.

I was going to say that your reward for this would be a visit from child protective serices and a restaining order. ;D But you say its a small town so you're all good. Me, think you're raising her right and she's a cute kid. Good for you.

Sounds like good work to me  :D :D

I am very curious as to how her presentation is received.  Would love to see the kids and teacher's (or teachers') reactions.

A PS to my original post.
Speaking as former Pro-Choice activist? I Would email that first picture of her holding the AR  to NARAL with the caption "I'm pro-choice and I shoot back". Just imagining the endles squabbles about whether to have it made into a poster or having you put on a watch list would keep me laughing for hours. If you don't want to to get into abortion? Send it to NOW. Caption it "No means No Asshole, did I stutter"? ;D

Give them the same type of moral quandary we get from "Pink Pistols" ?
Who we can thank for helping the NRA beat SF.

That could be fun. I did it in ROTC for a required "practical lesson and public speaking" project where we had to give a 5 minute talk demonstrating a practical skill to all 250 odd cadets and cadre with the lesson being graded by the cadets, on how well we could demonstrate any practical skill in the time alloted..I chose safe gun handling as my project, and got to "accidently" shoot my colonel with a painball with no repercussions as a result. Did I mention this could be fun? ;D

The AR is just a little too heavy for her...don't like her monopoding the gun off of the mag but at the pin and steel range there aren't a bunch of options.

In this video, she is kneeling on a soft gun case and resting on the forearm

Great idea, Guns, but be sure you don't get your a$$ in a sling with the Airsofts.  Our gun-unfriendly educational establishments have suspended kids for DRAWING pictures of weapons.  It is illegal to bring weapons onto most if not all educational campuses and I wouldn't want to see you end up in the hoosegow for doing something "they" find threatening.

Offered for discussion by Crusader who has NEVER wanted to stay in the Gray Bar Hotel. :P

Is the Spikes Tactical upper and lower all Aluminum? What holds me back from buying a .22 LR, AR-15 is plastic. The S&W model is full of it, and the "Colt" Umarex M-4 is cheap pot metal, not made from a forged Aluminum piece. That gun you have looks to be very well made.  Bill T.

This is just built from some Spike's components vs. being a complete gun.  I agree though...I didn't want a "pot metal" or plastic AR (even though it would be lighter for the kids).  I wanted a .22 AR that had the same size, weight and controls as a centerfire version.

I built this upper from a Spikes dedicated .22 barrel and dedicated bolt unit (about $365 total for the barrel and bolt)  The bolt is different from the Ceiner/CMMG conversion units in that it doesn't have a chamber adapter but is specially made to interface with the dedicated barrel.  It uses Black Dog magazines.  All controls are the same except it doesn't lock the bolt back after the last shot...the follower on the mag does keep the bolt open...sort of like the Yugo AK mags.

Upper components are:
+ Spike's barrel and bolt
+ CMT upper receiver
+ YHM rifle length railed forearm
+ YHM front sight, rear fxed
+ DPMS A2 FH

The lower is DPMS with a RRA 2-stage match trigger and a Vltor eMod stock and is borrowed from my 6.8 SPC rifle.

I have a Savage Cub that I start the kids on.  Great little gun.  Lightweight, great trigger (Accutrigger), accurate, safe single shot action, inexpensive, very good aperature sights and easy to mount a scope on it if you want.  Very nice little gun and perfectly sized for the little ones.

Kilo,

Does anyone manufacture a complete, all solid Aluminum AR-15 in .22 LR? With today's ammo cost I would think they would sell like hotcakes even if they were priced the same as .223 models.   Bill T.

I can't check it from work (proxy filter comes down on the evil "WEAPONS" sites) but if my memory holds, I think both Spikes and Tactical Solutions sell them.  Model 1 and M&A also do but I've never been too crazy about those companies.

I'll check for sure when I get home tonight.

What I thought...Spike's sells complete uppers for .22 LR...built from all forged aluminum parts.  I highly recommend their stuff.

Adorable, Phil.  ....and she helps make beer too.   You got a winner  :D :D :D

Shoot, I think I'd rather spend my time at the range watching these little ones learning and having fun than shooting myself. (just to be perfectly clear  :D :D)

I can't wait to get my daughter shooting. She's only 3 but is already showing interest because her big brother shoots and she wants to do everything he does. The Savage Cub is a great starter, that was my son's 5th birthday present. For his 6th birthday I got him a M&P22. I was going to build him a dedicated .22 AR but the M&P was so light weight (I know, plastic) and I got such a good deal on it when I bought it ($375) I figured it was the best deal. For his 7th birthday he and I are building a 5.56 AR together going for a ultra-light tactical. Magpul MOE stock and handguards over a 14.5" ultralight taper barrel with fixed flash hider. He already has "helped" me build a few rifles, handing me punches etc. and always help with the gun cleaning duties. He also took pictures of his range time in to school for show and tell, small towns and private schools are great.
