Title: Concealed carry for the Handicap ?
Post by: Hazcat on January 26, 2008, 05:29:31 AM
Just read a news article about a wheelchair bound man that was attacked and defended himself with a handgun.

Now I know a few people with disabilities of one kind or another and that got me thinking.

MB,  How about a show or show segments on how to carry for those with more life challenges than the rest of us?  (all I have to do is figure out how to chew gum and walk at the same time ;D)

BTW I wasn't sure how to title this thread but I figure we're all friends here.  If I pi$$ed some one off, sorry I didn't mean to.

Good question Haz. We have had two wheelchair bound come thru the NC CCW class and they had already figured out their own solution before they got to the range, but I'd like to get new ideas for the next student. Both of ours wore velcro type fanny packs across the chest. Also carried their cell phones, wallet and meds in them. Size was no consideration since most people expect the disabled to be carrying additional "stuff". If confronted, and someone demanded their cash, it would be expected that the victim would go for the fanny pack to surrender their wallet. Adios, robber! Helpless? Hardly..   Let's see what Michael can do for us. Thanks for the question.  Mac.

Also there are more that just wheel chairs (wlkers, canes, ect) as well as different level of abilities within the chair (lost of limb etc.)

These are probably some of the most picked on in our society by the craven thugs.  We need to "level (or one up) the playing field".

I am "one of those" handicapped folks here in Ohio. I take no offense at all, and appreciate the concern for us "easy targets." Mr. Bane, I think a segment on handicapped SD would be a fantastic idea! I've had my CCW for 2 yrs. now, but will admit to carrying for a good 15!

Good idea Haz.  I had the pleasure of watching a wheel chair bound individual take and pass his test for black belt in one of the martial arts long before CCW came around.  I'm sure he would get in a few licks against an unknowing attacker.

Used to go to church with a guy who had Spina Bifida (IIRC, that's what he told me he had) and was in a wheelchair. He told me he carried a S&W 629 while he rode bikes, and he said he just sits on the gun to carry it. I think that'd be a good segment to do too, MB. It'd be a real benefit to an overlooked group who definitely has a need for self defense.

I actually got back into shooting because of a handicap. I just posted a story in the ruger shirt giveaway (http://www.downrange.tv/forum/index.php?topic=1126.msg13304#msg13304) about how I use hand guns for exercising with because a gun is much easier to hold than most other objects of any weight. And dry firing helps build forearm and finger strength, aiming helps coordination.

I was paralyzed on my right side until a yr ago when i underwent spinal surgery. I walked with the aid of a cane and felt very vulnerable whenever I was out in public. In the past yr I have gotten my California concealed carry which has restored a great deal of confidence in me, but I also know my limitations. It has been a difficult process trying to find a way to carry and have it accessable with only one "good" arm.

I think this is a great idea to do something on this subject...........

While it as yet a niche market, the fact is that none of us are getting any younger, stronger or faster. This seems like a good thing to pursue.

Marsall,I really appreciate it you doing the shows on ccw and the handicapped since,I am one of them who has a right leg prosthesis.  There are days where I take my pickup and put my wheelchair in the covered back end of it and go on my merry way.    I plan on buying a Maxpedition type Verses bag so I can carry my stuff[meds] in it to.  Why dont you do a show on the handicapped on that.  thanks,rich642z. And, if you could pm me to let me know when you are in your office,we can talk more on the phone about it.

I would love to see a program on wheelchair CCW!! I am in a wheelchair parilized from the chest down from a jelious exhusband. I now go nowhere without a gun somewhere on my wheelchair. I will never be cought off gaurd agian. I have carried many diffrent handguns in many diffrent locations on my wheelchair. I have settled on a make and model semi automatic , and what I think is a good location. it took 5 years of trial and error and hunderds of rounds and countless hours at the range. but for me it works, being in this situation I know that every person situation is diffrent

Check the USCCA website. http://www.usconcealedcarry.com/index.htm

I know they have had an article or two about wheelchair bound CCW holders.  Maybe there is an archived article or perhaps a "thread" can be started there.
