I love those pictures...
He's a Jack Russell..(isn't he?) If he is..  he's supposed to chase cats, dad!  ;D

Marshal and I caved in once to  " This is the last one of the litter and we can't find a home for him" yada yada yada... and ended up with a 1/2 Jack Russell.. 1/2 rat terrier ..( called a Jack Rat)
Got Doby when he would fit in my hand ( 6 wks).
We were doing a lot of traveling after that and took him most places..gun shows etc... but sometimes we couldn't.  I was trying to find someone to keep him once and awhile.. and we ask  one of our best friends daughter ( age 10) ( who lives waaaay out in the country ) if she would like to keep him for us.. She was thrilled. He was a year old then.
When we got back, she cried and begged to have him. He got excited to see us.. but then ran over and jumped in her lap and looked at us. He obviously had bonded with her so much and had made friends with the horses, so through my tears of  sadness and her tears of happiness, I told her she could have him. ( He was becoming quite a handful to travel with .. he was active to say the least  :) )
That little girl grabbed that dog around the neck, hugged him tight.. and off they ran.. That was 4 yrs ago and he is still with her today going everywhere she goes. ..He runs with the horses every day and waits for her at the window and watches for her bus from school.
I have always had outside dogs ( Brittany's)  for hunting.. and always had an inside house dog ( poodle) with me constantly.. so the Jack Russell was a first and I might add the last. When my poodle died at age 16, I decided that I wasn't going to have any more inside dogs for awhile. Our lifestyle is too active right now and we are gone to much.. But that doesn't mean I don't want one every time I see one.. LOL
My poodle was only 4# and she went everywhere with us. I slalomed water ski and have for a hundred years. But I would tuck her inside my ski vest and ski with her. When she was with me, I just skied.( no fancy cutting etc) but she was fine as long as she was with me. I miss her..

Enough .. I have rambled.. ( again) sorry  :-[

Here is Doby when he was teeny.. and then later.. when he and Marshal were"chillin"..

PS: Notice the stick on her front leg? She can stand in the doorway and sticks will run across the yard to jump on her. Torry, OTOH can look like a ball of mud and in 30 minutes is clean as a whistle. Gotta love that all-weather coat!

We've had as many as 18 total cats and dogs at once; some fewer now. This is our youngest, Jack, half Aussie, half Husky. He appears to be overly fond of my socks. I have yet to discover where he takes them...

It is too hard for me to try to explain on here.

And one other thing..
I don't think I am alone when I say that when I open this thread up, I just start smiling HUGE! How can you see these pictures and read the posts and NOT just smile all over.
 Aren't pets great?  :)

Shawnee looks just like my poodle, Taffy. Taffy was all of 6# and  lived to be almost 16 and she never left my side in all of those years. She was only away form me a few times and then she stayed with my mom. I still miss her. Tiny poodles are so fun..and they don't shed.  :D For most of my life I have had poodles and Kjell of course had German Shepards. He helped train the drug dogs in Norway so he naturally loved the breed.
Maybe we need to get one of each again.. Now THAT would be a buddy system..  ;D

Love this thread and love those pictures..

Molly wishes you a belated birthday Marshal'ette. We had a busy day yesterday and I wasn't able to post.

I told her if she wanted to ride with me on the bike then she had to protect her eyes. She took to them without any trouble, but usually pushes them up with her paw once we stop.

No pics because my POS camera quit on me. My dog is a half-Sheltie/half-??? and his head looks too small for his body. Instead of weighing 20 pounds like a Sheltie he weighs 55, but some of of that is tumors. My vet can't even figure out how much he should weigh. I'm his 6th(?) owner and he must be about 15 years old. He's my buddy and I love him, and my tumor dog loves me. When I take him to visit my mom he wants to stay there. Maybe she has more snacks than I do.  :)  He can't jump into the truck or on the bed anymore, and has trouble going up stairs. He has less trouble going down stairs and if he slips he can body surf down to the living room. That scared the crap out of me when it happened but he got up and walked away. Not bad for being over 100 dog years old.

Last year, I posted my two babies, Torry and Cheyenne. JF's post reminded me of another - here's Crash - part Black Lab and part Dalmatian (all black with polka dotted toes).

Crash was adopted, I was her 3rd owner. City dog, should not have been She had been abused as a puppy, the assholes used something called dominance aggression on her. When I first got her from a friend, I went to pet her goodbye, and she opened my hand. Surprised her when I did not beat her, simply sent her to her bed while I took care of the bleeding.

She got to a point where I could pet her at any time, even when she was lying down. We used to play a game I called Cujo where I would pat her cheeks and she would bare her teeth growl a little and make like she was going to take my hand off - but never did. She gave soft, wet, slow "Crash" kisses.

She learned to chase bunnies on a ranch in Wyoming. Best part was when she buggered a nest and went in circles trying to figure out which one to chase - by which time all were gone.

She developed bad arthritis, skin tumors, etc. Still tried to keep up with the puppies when we went to the hills on the ranch, and I would have to send her home. Left the house doors unlocked, I knew she would destroy anyone who did not belong there.

She left us in July 2007, barely able to walk, falling down all of the time, incontinent, but still a sweet dog who enjoyed her life with me. I had the vet put her down. I would have done it, but she had so much violence in her life, I wanted her to leave quietly and peacefully, and she did, cradled in my arms.

I cried like a damn kid.

This is Crash near the end.

My little buddy is getting gray whiskers and so am I. When it happens to a dog you know their days are numbered but don't want them to ever leave you. When my boy passes on I know I'll cry more than when I watched my dad die. I won't be able to put him down either. The vet will have to do it. BTW his name is Tag. He's my dog Tag but he doesn't hang from my neck.  :)

This is our girl Gen when she was about 6 months old.

Gen was a purebred golden retriever who had the sweetest spirit of any creature I have ever known.  She came to live with us when she was 8 weeks old, and for the next 13+ years never left my side.  She confined to her indoor kennel the morning of my first heart attack, and damn near destroyed the thing trying to get out.  When the first LEO came through the door she knew that old dad was being taken care of, so she laid down and cried softly.

When I was sick she'd lay right beside my bed or sofa, and keep an eye on me all the time.  If I fell asleep and started snoring she'd nudge me until I woke up.  I guess she thought that meant there was a problem.  She used to sit looking out the dining room window about the time of day when she knew I'd be returning from work, and then met me at the door with a huge puppy-smile and wagging her tail with at a pace that could have knocked over a small child.

She was 90 pounds of gentle, loving dog, and I miss her terribly.  Sometime during the night of September 30th, 2008 she apparently had a stroke, because it was VERY obvious in the morning that there was a huge problem.  My wife and I held her in our arms as the vet gave her the injection, and this big, tough 50-something year old man cried like a baby.  Even writing this I'm tearing up.

This little girl gave her us her love, and our lives are richer because she was a part of them.

Here is Rocco.  He's a purebred German Shepherd with Slovokian bloodlines.

Here he is at 8 weeks.  His first night in his new home.

Here he is at 5 months.  He prefers to chase soccer balls, not tennis balls.  He just bites them and brings them back to you.

He's twice as big now.  I need to get some more recent pics of him.

tt11758.......I'm setting here crying like baby. I've been there also.. and the pain of them being gone just never ever leaves..

Eric...(USSA-1....... He is absolutely gorgeous. Don't let Marshal ever be around him. he will never be the same.
He trained the Canine Shepard's for the police force in Norway and also had 2 or 3 at different time of his own. He has wonderful stories about them.. and all the things that they would do.
His old Tanya was more human than dog I think.

If we were not on the road so much , he would have another one for sure.

Thanks everyone for sharing.

Were hopeless when it comes to animals that are about to be destroyed.
Our four dogs are all "death bed" rescues. Make me sick to think what these poor animals went through, and I can only pray to GOD that they do not remember the bad old days, or at least they do not recall them well.

Let me find the inhumane people that did what they did..... the will be no saving them.

They are safe, happy, healthy, friendly animals now. Just don't raise a hand too fast around us now, the all know who to protect.
(funny to see the Chihuahua/Rat terrier get mad....)

Our first girl Lab mix

Our basket case 110 lb White Sheppard / fox hound cross

Number three the Chihuahua/Rat terrier mix - breed is called a RatChe, all heart and soul. (we also call her the Sheppard's Mini-Me) 110 lb and a 6 lb funny to see play together.

and our Thanksgiving present full breed Scottish Border terrier

Between the two terriers we no longer have mice, voles, bunnies (and I think a cat or two) on our property.

Great pics of everyone's dogs!!! My wife and I have been dog-less for almost two years now. We have always had Labs and enjoyed them. And we'll be empty nesters in the spring (YES).  ;D

We are thinking about two breeds. Australian Shepherds and Border Collies. From what I've read they are very much alike.
Anyone with any thoughts about the two breeds, good and bad I would like to hear all I can.

Someone in a debate about when does life begin stated very clearly - when the kids move out and the dog dies!!

I have an Aussie, would not trade her for anything. I posted a picture of her earlier in this thread. She is bred for work, not show but most of the dogs today are bred for show, agility or some other non-working activity. I got her from friends in Wyoming who breed working ranch dogs.

Both breeds you mentioned are high maintenance. You need space for them to run and you need to provide your attention to them. They need to be trained to behave properly. They are ecstatic if there is work to do, and will find it if you don't. So expect them to herd children, cats and you if you don't have other animals for them to work.

Good luck with your hunt.

He has his toys and rips the stuffing out of most of them.  What he does do is every time I try and get into bed, he jumps up on my side and demands belly rubs and won't move until he gets them!  What can I say...it's a ritual now.

I got a new scanner/printer this evening and copied a picture of my mutt from a few years ago. I keep it in a frame on my desk. No other pics of family or anything, just him. You can see the crease in his left ear. That ear stays down 99.99% of the time while the right one stays up. One in a blue moon when he tips his head back, he makes his left ear pop up just for a moment. BTW my left ear has a crease in the cartilage at the top of it. Me and my dog Tag are 2 of a kind.

Lowe's Torrington Princess, aka Torry, passed away quietly this morning at 7:40AM CT. She was having trouble breathing, panting heavily, sitting next to me, suddenly lay down, put her head on my shoe, and within minutes was gone.

Rest well my little love, and be happy in a land where you can chase kitty-kitties to your heart's content.

You all have wonderful companions.

I haven't posted in this thread I guess cause I just felt too much sting in the loss. Back in Feb I lost my best friend of 12 years. He was there with me thick and thin and one of the last things from my childhood I had.

He was a great Shep with an amazing personality. Very loyal and more than once he made sure that we slept soundly when my family live in Reading, Pa. Not a day goes by that I don't him. I honestly never thought I would own a dog again until I met Alice. Alice was a stray brought into the ARL. She is 10 months old and is just getting over her surgery to have her spayed. She is house trained, comes, sits and lays down on command and is one of the most cuddly GSDs I have ever met. I really don't think there is any replacement for what they bring to our lives.

Get smaller dogs, they'll generally live longer.

Harley here is 10 already and still feels like he's a puppy!  Other than loyalty, love and protection from tree rats and a leaf blowing across the yard, they're not good for much else..
