(Reuters) - Australia appointed its first woman prime minister, Julia Gillard, who vowed on Thursday to end division over a controversial mining tax, resurrect a carbon trade scheme and call elections within months.
Former prime minister Kevin Rudd made an emotional and ignominious exit, quitting just before the center-left Labor Party was to dump him in an internal ballot and less than three years after a stunning election victory in 2007.
The Rudd government's dramatic slide in support this year sparked fears within the ruling party of an electoral defeat at a poll expected around October.
"I asked my colleagues to make a leadership change because I believed that a good government was losing its way," Gillard told a news conference.
Bookmaker Centrebet made a Gillard Labor government outright favorite to win the next election over conservative opponents.
Gillard has long been one of the government's best performers in parliament with her ability to sell policies and deflect political attacks.

Its like the USSR in the twenties. Being a member of the Supreme Soviet was fun until Beria showed up at the front door at three in the morning. You wonder why I love politics, you can't make this stuff up. Honestly, its like the Sopranos, lots of boring episodes, a few meaningful glances, and then Bam!, somebody gets whacked. ;D

here in AU we vote for a local member of a party, the party with the most in is the government now the party elects the leader we get our PM
a lot are not happy as they think it is a Presidential style as they think they just vote for the leader

We are but a young country built upon the blood of criminals, thieves and vagabonds yet still are more honest than any bloody politician you care to name, including the Ronald McDonald clone pictured above.
One day when people wipe the shit out of there eyes and take the cotton wool out of their ears we too may have a episode like you did in 1861 and bond us together for once and for all and ensure us of a proper constitution enabling our rights defintively. Until that time its citizens will be bent over taking it on behalf of the terrible decisions of its so called leaders.

Actually using some place wild as a penal colony is actually a good idea since your "criminal classes" ( ;D ) are more aggressive than the average person, traits that would get you deported were often exactly what was needed to thrive in a new wild country.
