I would say 90% of the calls I received yesterday were in support of the Supreme Court and people say they want to bear guns. They’re tired of the violence and it’s very very interesting. I have had a few on both sides today, but yesterday was overwhelming, it was stunning to me.
I just told Attorney Lou Meyers, lady stopped me last night; I did the commencement address at Boys and Girls High. She said I listen to your show Reverend and I want you to know I’m saved sanctified by feel of the Holy Ghost, but if they come in my house I’m going to drop them right where they stand. So, and she looked like she was in her eighties.

I've mentioned being a bit more racially sensitive on this board before. This is why. If I were AA living in a high crime neighborhood, I'd sure as hell make a gun a priority purchase and maybe come here to look for help, like that guy from Ar. asking about getting his CCW. The NRA seriously needs to get off the dime and start outreach in minority communities. Not only is it a natural contituency as these are folks that need guns, its also the Democrat's base. If folks like Sharpton start saying "I'm the NRA" right along with the Blue Dogs, the bay area idiots and folks like Daley are going to find it hard to locate an ally.

Wow, this is two times in the same day that I find myself in agreement with FQ. Armageddon must be just around the corner.
FQ has a sensible observation however, since something like half of AA men have prison convictions, there is a built-in speed-bump on the path to gun ownership. And the pols in Chicago will continue to place impediments in the way of legitimate ownership. Bad guys will always find a way, but the guys who follow the law will have their right to self defense limited by law. We NEED to bump these guys at every electoral opportunity.

I've got one nit to pick.
Why is it up to the NRA ? I thought Libertarians were all about personal freedom and personal responsibility ?
I don't know how it goes down there, but until all these liberal massholes started coming up here if we saw something that needed doing, we "got 'er done" with out depending on outsiders.

Not armageddon, just common sense. Look, we have a somewhat deserved reputation as being a club of midle aged conservative white guys, no others need apply. Look how much crap I get here for being socially liberal. Why? Do you really give a damn that I'm pro-choice, pro-gay rights and think the drug war is a bad idea? I mean I put up with it beause I enjoy the give and take, but how many others would be turned off? What about posts like "women are stupid"? What about the Obama eating watermelon posts? Look, there is one thing we should care about. Do you you or do you not like guns? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TC2xTCb_GU sorry couldn't resist ;D). The thing is, lots of folks we don't think of as "our kind of people" are potential allies. Liberals in high crime areas, minorities who are sick of living in a war zone, women who are bit skeptical of pepper spray and a knee to the nuts for SD, gays who are sick of being beaten up because of who they choose to love, the elderly etc. It is time and past time to drop the elitist "you must be a Christian, white male conservative or we'll look at you funny" image that we have fairly or unfairly gotten. Enough. A lot of these folks won't agree with us on a bunch of issues. Who cares? HTFU and not just welcome, but seek out folks with different POVs. As long as they are strapped, its all good. The Pink Pistols, gun toting hippies, grannies with guns, pissed off black folks packing heat? Its all good as far as I'm concerned. Expand and grow or wither and die. Take your pick. Rant over.

You are absolutely correct...they are more than any party I know of.
Does that mean you and TT plan to run on the Libertarian ticket?

Trick question, Tom, running on the Libertarian, or in FQ's case, the "Libertarian" ticket would be the kiss of death.

Now I like that, I also like the idea of reaching out to other communities, I will forward this to Rev. Blanchard, in case he has not read it, if I check, he might have already talked about it, He is a cool resource here on DRTV, read his blogs and listen to his podcast's I encourage everyone.
Now as to the NRA, they might not have reached out, but a long time ago, when Brady was going after Saturday night specials, I was kind of in agreement, since I had seen, used and experienced how bad cheap, ( RG, Sterling, Accutek, Tech9's, raven .25's) guns can be, the NRA argument, was " what about poor people, living on a fixed income? They cannot afford a 200.00 gun, but they can afford a 50 - 100 gun, and no it may not be reliable, except for that 1st shot." that did open my eyes, I personally would not want to own one, but if that is all I could afford, well that gun, a baseball bat and a sharp stick, need to be close by. IMHO, mailings to these people asking for funds is silly, internet is now a lot of peoples modern newspaper that costs nothing, but I guarantee, that older, fixed income minorities, probably don't have it, but their grandchildren probably do, If I were king of the NRA, I would spend the money and do mailers, saying simply, " We believe you have the right to defend yourself, please vote for candidates who agree " , no plea for money, no disrespect, just facts, the only thing these people have to offer is that which does not cost money, their vote or their sweat equity in a candidate, sign building parties etc... and the willingness to put a sign in their own front yard.
comments are welcome.

As long as they are legally packing. ;D

The first thing the NRA needs to do is put out a mailer and/or tv ads in urban areas stating how they have fought to get the guns back to their proper ownres an New Orleans, the support for McDonald in his case against Chicago, and some other facts to point out that they are here to help all gun owners regardless of color or creed.
That's the easy part.
The hard part is building up a shooting community in the inner city areas. 90% of Sharpton's callers support the right to own guns, but they have a hard time finding a place to safely train and practice with them. You got a better chance of people knowing about a public golf course in a city park than knowing where the closest gun range is.
If there are more affordable ranges, then there will be more shooting communities built, and a larger fan base to include.

Good point Ulmus, ad Operator above.
One of the more cringe worthy moments in politics, miles beyond Kerry on the wind surfer,or even Dukakis in the tank, involved Bush the elder. DC had some Big Brothers, Big Sisters help out the urban youth day. GHWB took a group of very confused looking black teenagers out for fly casting lessons on the South Lawn of the White House. Now here's the thing. How many SE DC kids are going to take up fly fishing? Anyone going to sponsor them for the $500+ outfits plus waders etc? GHWB might as well have taught them to eat caviar, drive a Bentley or fly a Lear Jet.
Yet here's the funny thing. Some of the best flyfishing in North America (with a light outfit) is the Shad run up the Potomac in the spring. Almost no one fishes it. Yet during college me and dozens of others took a bus to some of the coolest fishing this side of Alasaka.
So, how do you turn kids on to a great thing in their own back yards that no one has told them about, they've never considered, and they don't have the gear for? This is the challenge the NRA faces with gun's in the hood. No one has invited young black kids to shoot in a positive way. Even the few schools that offer JROTC don't offer marksmanship and there are zero ranges. You have to start from the ground up. All the propoganda in world will do diddly unless you can put a gun in someone's hand and show them a positive and affordable experience. Guess what? That was the NRA's initial mission. To promote civilian marksmanship among the American people. Spend the money. Build the ranges. Buy the .22 rifles. Start the youth clubs. Midnight basketball? How about HS rifle teams? I'll pay for the guns, ammo and range time. I'll volunteer to act an RSO. How about you?

I think FQ may have mis understood my last post.
My point was YOU, (us ) Do something.
OK, you did, you brought up the subject here, whats next ?
Talk it up among other shooters you know. If you start it, the momentum will build.

That is the major problem everywhere

It comes down to cash. I pay my dues to the NRA every year. Frankly, I would pay double with a smile if they used it to build ranges in the inner city and started youth marskmanship programs. Here's a money saver, stop sending me the American Rifleman. I rarely read it and would appreciate the money going to somethig productive instead. If I want gun porn, I'll buy a copy of Guns and Ammo. Like wise, lets look at the ILA. I think we would get more bang for our buck (literally) if we provided ranges and youth marksmanship programs in our inner cities rather than bribing Congrees critters. I mean the bribes work short term, but ensuring a strong pro 2A constituency will work better long term. Its all about doing the smart thing being the same as doing the right thing. The NRA was chartered to improve civilian marksmanship, So let's do it. It also has the side benefit of bringing a lot of new pro-2A voters into the fold. You set out to do good, you'll end up doing well. The reverse does not apply.

The trick will be to get firearms safety/training/tradition taught in public/private schools everywhere. Ranges will become available as part of the program. There are schools everywhere. The all come with classrooms too. Then we just have to support ranges for them.

CRAP !
I wrote a real good post replying to FQ last night. I seem to have screwed up posting and lost it .
I remember it started by saying that "cash" is a cop out, since it costs nothing to talk, it then went on to agree with much of his post;
"lets look at the ILA. I think we would get more bang for our buck (literally) if we provided ranges and youth marksmanship programs in our inner cities rather than bribing Congrees critters. I mean the bribes work short term, but ensuring a strong pro 2A constituency will work better long term."
Although I disagree about American Rifleman, and wrote that he can opt out of the magazine and the money will be used elsewhere.
