Title: The Alaska Adventure
Post by: alfsauve on July 02, 2010, 10:19:06 AM
Okay, okay.   I know everybody missed me.   The wife and I took a two week cruise/tour of Alaska.   Highly recommended.  Just to keep it on-topic:   I did meet a lot of other shooters/hunters both on board and on shore.  Including a cute, blond clerk in one of the jewelry stores at one of the ports.....she's into shooting clays and reloads her own shells.

We left some things undone.  Am anticipating two trips back.  One a cruise and one on our own in a rental car.   We didn't go whale watching, or fishing or hunting or ski-plane up to the arctic circle.  Only got up to the 65th parallel.

And many of these folks (outside of Anchorage area) are living off the grid and are probably the most likely to survive any world wide catastrophe.

Wow, I'm envious to say the least!  I had been planning a mountain lion hunt, for this winter, prior to my health turning on me.  I was going to schedule the same trip for the winter of next year, but after seeing your pictures, I may have to reevaluate that idea.  I have wanted to visit Alaska since I began hunting and you have given me new inspiration.  Glad you had a good / safe trip.   ;)

Very cool trip - my Mom did the same thing, only her boat was a lot smaller. On my to do list, but there's an RFB out there somewhere with my name on it first.   ;D

My dad did this twice with my Great Aunt. He prefers Holland America as they cater to a more mature crowd. Not geriatric, just not geared for screaming kids. They do the inside passageway and offer day trips to Glaciers, Denali NP etc. He reccomends a balcony room as you can watch from your cabin, but says its unnecessary. There are plenty of observation lounges, where you can sit and watch for free. As its all incusive, coffee, beer etc are on the House. Figure about 2K for 10y-14 days. That's one way to do it.
Here's the other depending on how hard core you and the missus want to get. You can book passage on the farey that runs from Bellingham to Anchorage. Zero accomadations, sleep on the floor with a bag, or book a spartan berth. Food and drink is on you. BUT, you can get off and get on when you want. Spend a few days sight seeing here or fishing there. Buy a couple of bikes and have mobility. Its kind of like a Euro-rail pass. You buy a certain number of days and travel as much or as little as you want. Its a great way to DIY a trip. You can book giudes and hotels along the way. Its very standard and much more flexible, though obviously less plush than the cruise ships.
Either way, a great, low hassel trip

PS I've also spent time in Juneau, rent a car, lots of great fishing in town. I then booked a fly in/drop off to Admiralty Island. The State offers very nice cabins with wood bunks, a wood stove, wood (you split into smaller pieces), a 12 foot boat (BYOM) or row, and a clean Chemical toilet. It was $40 a night, plus 1.5 hours fly in at $300 per hour (higher now obviously). Still, a lot cheaper than a lodge and a very cool trip.

Thanks for bringing back some fond memories. My wife and I made that cruise/trip in 2001 and keep saying that we are going back some day.

Last one on my vacation.   Still can't get over how well situated those living in AK (except for Anchorage) are well positioned for the IOTWAWKI.

This is the final set of 880+ photos of the adventure.    I put some pity comments in as well.   If you're planning a similar cruise in the near future, don't hesitate to send me a PM for suggestions.
