Part of my job involves me doing 4-6 hour supervised visits for underaged clients that basically means I am an over paid babysitter for these times.
Over the weekend I was faced with a 6-hour visit and looking for something to keep myself occupied with I went to a large chain conveinence store looking for a magazine to read.
The store had a sizeable magazine rack but after looking through all the sections I was disappointed to not find any Firearm or Hunting Magazines at all.
I approached the clerk and asked him about this and was informed that the company felt Gun and Hunting Mags promoted Violence and so they had recently pulled these selections from their inventory.
What really irked me was that while this chain store refused to carry Firearm magazines...they did carry and prominently displayed a large selection of soft core as well as hard core Porno Mags.
Maxim,Playboy, Penthouse, Cheri and Hustler are all acceptable reading material but not a single magazine geared towards Firearms...This country sure has it's priorities screwed up. Whether I am coming or going now...I refuse to shop at this chain store any more....I'll go buy my gas from BP first.
*RANT OFF*

BP stations are owned by local franchise holders and no matter what we think of BP International, we need to support local businesses. If BP can't move gas at the local BP stations, it will be sold on the spot market, so boycotting BP stations does nothing to hurt BP International. It just hurts friends and neighbors. Besides, we need to keep BP Int in business so they can pay the claims brought by my neighbors and friends along the Gulf.
Large chain stores, on the other hand, are fair game in my book. Let us know who this misguided org is, and we can join you in your outrage.
Offered as a personal thought by Crusader who is deeply saddened by oily Gulf water and shrimp that taste like a gas station.

Crusader...I come from a family of former gas station owners. Between my Uncle's and my Father...Our family at one time owned 5-Derby and later on Coastal stations in this area...I remember pumping gas for .35 cents per gallon Full Service....so I know what you are saying about the independant owners.
I in no way meant to imply that I support boycotting BP and have in fact probably bought more fuel from them recently than before.
My gripe stems from what I see as a Corporate decision and what appears to be a mandate to not carry Firearms related magazines in a national chain store...while promoting Pornography as being acceptable.
Again..this was never meant to be an attack on BP.
And P.S. There is a strong hint to the chain store in bold in my original post.
They use to be known as Git-N-Go.

I've run into that scenario over the years. Try talking to the owner / manager rather than Minimum Wage Charlie. I have changed minds by politely pointing out the flaw in their thinking. If that doesn't work, politely take your business elsewhere.

Hey Rat, sorry if I came on a little strong there. Chalk it up to excessive worry for friends who have been/are being put out of business by this oil mess.
I agree with you that there is a misplaced morality when a store provides porn-lite photo mags of somebody's daughter, but won't display a magazine that features something legal, moral and honorable. But, as Pioneer so succinctly pointed out, Joe Lunchbox doesn't make the decision--you need to talk to the boss. As for me, I try to keep my business as local as possible--locally owned hardware stores instead of Lowe's or Homer; local pharmacy instead of CVS. Local gun shop instead of Bass. Can't always make that happen, but last week I got a replacement shower valve from the 4th local supplier I went to and I didn't have to set foot in a Big Box. I got the last valve in stock, but the guy said he'd order another few for me because, "The other one's gonna go out real soon." Now that's service.
And, I'll pay attention to what mags my local mini-marts are carrying. If the disparity you found exists in this market... Well, you don't really know this about me, but I am not exactly the shy type (LOL). And I can always lean on Haz for extra support--he was a D.I. and learned a little about eliciting support from the recalcitrant.

Damn Crusader! I surely enjoy reading your writing..... ;D
"Recalcitrant", I haven't been called that since the seventh grade..... ;D
As to the thread? Agree on the rant and agree on the replies. Local folks, local produce, small town business are always my goals now that I can afford them. I actually found an honest to God butcher shop in a little market the other day!
Carry on!

It's always good to find other like minded individuals....I am fortunant myself in that I have worked in many Mom and Pop buisneses myself over the years. I also try to keep my buisness local and luckily for me the Big Bass store was actually founded here in Springfield Mo. I actually remember buying Buzz Baits and Tackle from the Brown Derby Liquor Store that Johnny's Dad owned and in which he started his Pro Shop in the mid seventies....Guess that dates me a little bit.
As for the BP issue. I recently drove past a group of individuals with BP protest signs standing at a busy intersection here in Springfield Mo. *Note* I said drove past and not over.
I pulled into a nearby lot and engaged them in a debate in the intersection of Glenstone and Battlefield...One of the busiest in this town...isn't it amazing how quickly the protestor types resort to name calling, cursing and even threats when one expresses a logical, informed albeit dissenting opinion to their own?
My arguement was that if we protest BP and hurt or drive them from buisness...then who but the American Taxpayer will be left to foot the cleanup bill...?
Their argument quickly turned to F%&K You!!!!!
I believe it is important to challenge each and every point these people bring into the publics eye...regardles of how minute and or minor they may seem at the time.
P.S. Crusader...No Apology is necesary Sir.

Checked the local store, they carry Gun's Illustrated, on the same rack with High Times, they have another whole section for skin mags.

Would I be right in guesing that there were two or three firearms mags and a dozen or more Porn selections?

Thanks for that. I do my best to keep things interesting (though 'Mette thinks I'm too verbose) and I appreciate the heck out of it when someone notices. ;D ;)

No Rat, They have a 6 X 8 Room of Skin books, the ENTIRE gun section consists of, (got the title wrong in my last post ) "Shooting Illustrated".
