I will soon be taking conceal carry classes (thanks to my wife - anniversary present) and am in the market for a new conceal carry gun. I'm definitely looking at the snubbies and want one with laser grips. My question though is what is your opinion about the big bore snubbies. I read that it takes at least a 5in barrel for all the powder of a .357 magnum to burn (with one heck of flash in dim light conditions with one shorter than that). How does this translate to the big bore snubbies. I'm a big man and recoil is not much of a concern for me (i love shooting my .357 mag taurus with its 6in barrel and yes, I use .357 magnum to target shoot with).

In my opinion it is not required to have a magnum snub for CC. With current bullet designs you can get a 38+P designed snub that will perforn within 2% of a 357. My pesonal choice would be a S&W 642 that comes with a CT grip. A good friend of mine has one as his CC and I set it up for him using 125grJHP+P loads, recoil is managable and at 50ft you can clean out the 10 ring.
Big Bores are only as good as the operator, control and shot placement are key

Even big tuff HeMen don't like the recoil of 357 fired from a scandium J frame. I find the recoil of 38 +p to be my limit when fired from an Airweight chiefs special. Choose whichever Smith J frame rocks your boat. If you plan on pocket carry (a J frame is too big for me to pocket carry but I'm a small framed fella) get a bodyguard or centennial.

I thought the thread said " BIG BORE SNUBBIES" big bore starts with 4 and go's up.
1'st S&W 625 3" (http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff150/m25operator/100_1375.jpg)
Since You are talking about J frames, now discontinued, and I don't know which picture will come out where, the 940, 9mm,
it out performs 38's or 357's in a 2" barrel.(http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff150/m25operator/100_1376.jpg)
I carry that one everyday with 2 moonclips in the off pocket.
I do definitely want to see the new, S&W night guard. Now to the smaller big bores, Charter Arms .44, Taurus .44 and .45 five shots. S&W 5 shot .44 spl. etc...

I'm definitely talking about the .44, .45, and up. No I do not want a hammerless revolver (I love the feel the trigger - extra security maybe). I just wandered if a .357 mag was too much of a bullet for the snubbie, what does that mean about anything larger than that. Pros vs. Cons and such.

Smith just introduced a whole line of big bore snubbies. See the Shot Show 2008 report on this site. There is the Charter Arms Bulldog 44 Special. I have never shot one but I have never been impressed with the Charters I have examined. The Bulldog is the only Charter I would consider tho.
For me, size matters for CCW. I used to think gun writers who told you that you could confortably carry a Governement 1911 and conceal it were the worst kinds of liars. If you work in a kaki and tucked in shirt enviroment just where in hell are you going to conceal a big gun?
My main three CCW are a Kel Tec P32, Chiefs Special airweight, and a Star Firestar 9mm. All are small and compact and the first two are lightweight to boot.
YMMV.
