Cash loss 'least of Blogetery owner's concerns' as authorities shut down 73,000 blogs
MORE than 70,000 bloggers have had their accounts shut down by a US authority - and nobody knows why.
Users of the WordPress platform Blogetery were silenced last week, with the only explanation being that "a law enforcement agency" was responsible.
Web-hosting company BurstNet informed Blogetery - a free service provider - of the shutdown with an almost apologetic notice due to a "history of abuse".
"Please note that this was not a typical case in which suspension and notification would be the norm," it told Blogetery's operator.
"This was a critical matter brought to our attention by law enforcement officials.
"We had to immediately remove the server."
Now other bloggers are lighting up the net with their theories as to exactly which "law enforcement agency" was responsible and why.
File-sharing news site TorrentFreak claims it's most likely the work of anti-piracy authorities.
However, various spokespeople told CNET that neither government authority responsible for policing internet piracy, nor the Recording Industry Association of America were behind the order.
Blogetery's owner admits his users were guilty of the odd copyright violation, but was adamant he removed any offending material within 24 hours.
Which leaves possibly more sinister reason behind the shutdown and denial of service to 73,000 - presumably mostly innocent - bloggers, such as terrorism-related activity or paedophilia.
A response from BurstNet to TorrentFreak's query may shed some light of further developments.
A representative said it had offered Blogetery's operator his money back, but said "it should be the least of his concerns".
“Simply put: We cannot give him his data nor can we provide any other details," they said.
"By stating this, most would recognize that something serious is afoot.”
going to be interesting what caused them to shutdown 70K accounts
is it the end of Free Speech, where is this taking us.....

SUPPOSEDLY the site they are shutting down are 'file sharing' meaning movies and music. Me, I'm against the gov't having control like this and file sharing needs to be contested in the courts not by government fiat.

I saw a report late today that the site was shut down by the CTO of the host company after being informed that there were "links to al quaida" on the site. There wasn't any more to the late afternoon story than that.
