Title: FNP-45
Post by: tasdisr on July 21, 2010, 02:00:08 PM
I was looking at an FNH FNP-45 (not the tactical) in SS this weekend. Felt good in my hand, but don't know much about
them. Anyone have any experience with FNH?

I don't have any experience with their handguns outside of HiPowers.  That said, I have several FN-designed firearms and overall I think their current lineup is innovative and well made.  FNH is a storied company with a long history of fine designs.  While they aren't my cup of tea, the P90, FiveSeven and the FS2000 are pretty neat designs.

My FN experience is a little more "old school".

I can't speak to the FNP-45 specifically as I have only fondled, er, uhm, held one.  I will say that they are a handful.

I do, however, own a FNP-9.  This is my most favorite non-1911 handgun.  It is reliable, accurate, and a pleasure to shoot.  I like the ergonomics, balance, and "pointability."  The trigger is crisp in both DA and SA mode.  It eats anything I care to feed it and it is more accurate than I am.

The FNP line is, without a doubt, the most overlooked line of quality handguns and are definitely a bargain for what they usually sell for.  The only drawback that I know of is that their lack of popularity makes finding a holster a little more difficult.  I've been thinking of getting a FNP-40 but I can't quite talk myself into another gun chambered in .40 S&W.

In summary - get it, you wont be sorry.

The boys over at  Gunblast .com site have a good report on the FNP-45. and it is in the Archive section. They liked it a lot.

It is a handfull, but it is not too much larger than my CZ SP-01.  I have average size hands but it still felt good in my hands.
Think its time for a trip to the gun shop this weekend!

I have a FNP-45 & a FNP-9 (although the wife has pretty much commandeered the 9) and love them. I've been carrying the 45 a lot since my Glock 21 has been gone for almost 3 months for custom work. It's like the best of both worlds, i shoot it like a 1911, carry cocked and locked but it has the good points of the Glock as well. I'll be picking up a FNP-45 tactical as soon as funding permits as well. I think the new FN pistols are the most underrated polymer frame guns on the market. If you shop right you can get insane deals. I know Michael Bane is a big fan of them, he's mentioned them more than a few times.

I feel like the FNP-45 would've won the new military pistol contract if it wasn't cancelled. The only thing I'm not sure about is long term durability but I don't see how it would be any less than a Glock/XD/M&P etc. Our 9 has close to 5000 rds through it. When I first bought it I put 1000 rds of Wolf through it in a day and a half of shooting with no cleaning. It was a mess at the end, the FDE frame was almost all black but I never had a single FTF. I haven't run the 45 that hard yet but have had some 300-500 rd range trips with it. maybe 2500-3000 rds total and no FTF's in it either.

I have been shopping around local and most are pricing it at around $629. Buds has it a little higher at $634.

I paid $525 for mine at a gun show but from a dealer/shop I use quite a bit. I've seen a bunch go on gunbroker in the $550 range as well.

Fellow FN9 owner, and will agree with all previous posts to reliability, accuracy, comfort, and function with all ammo.

The FN platform is fantastic. OBTW, did you at least check out the M+P .45? ::)

I did check out the M&P 45 and Beretta PX4 45, but keep getting drawn back to the FNP

If I recall, FNH is offering special pricing on FNPs for NRA Certified Instructors.  Don't know if that appies to you but would be worth checking into.

I almost bought the FNP USG-45 back in January but decided on something else for reasons that had nothing to do with the FNP. I liked everything about that gun so much that when I recently added a 9mm to the collection I went right back to FNH and bought the FNX-9 which has all of the things I liked on the .45 in a 9mm. FN's are great guns and don't get the attention they deserve, which does make finding good holsters a bit of a problem.

Thank you for the opportunity to promote my favorite holster - The Silent Thunder.  Leather lined kydex with adjustable cant and retention.  Can be had in either IWB or OWB configuration.  And it just so happen that they make them for the FNP-9/40 and FNP-45.  I have one for my FNP-9 and really like it.

Sorry for the plug but when I find something that is a little out of the ordinary and works so well I like to get the word out.    ;D

fnp-45 is great but,
The trigger was ungood from the box, it took hundres of rounds and thousands of dryfires before it became very nice.
I have 10 15 round magazines, none of them will feed Winchester White Box hardball ammo.  All of the 14 rounders feed it but none of the 15 rounders.  15 rounders eat any and all ammo except Winnies.
After a bunch of dryfires and no more Winnie ammo, FNP-45 has become most trusted bed side piece with TLR-2 light/laser.

Great purchase...., triggers are like underwear, if your looking for a "race gun" that can be said for many pistols, and tips and tweaks are out there,  HOWEVER, regardless, when you squeeze it, and it goes bang, in a training or SD scenario, that's all that matters.

It's a fine pistol, looking forward to reading your range report,.....OBTW, you have to post a pic of your new acquisition.

It's a gun porn thing,.... ;)

How's the muzzle flip compared to the Glock?

I don't notice to much of a difference between it and the Glock 21 in recoil. I don't really have an issue with either pistol as far as muzzle flip or control goes though. I'd say the FNP is probably marginally more controllable, mainly because the frame has a much better gripping surface with a combination of checkering/stippling/texturing than the Glock has. I have a 21 frame at Boresight Solutions right now having the frame textured and lightly reduced/reconfigured so I expect it to be even better when it comes home.

I think the FNP-45 is one of the most underrated .45 semi out there...I love mine, and I think it's one of the lightest shooting .45s I've ever put rounds through. Plus, I've never been able to make it jam. I got the FNP-45 after my Sweetie copped the FNP-9, took it to GUNSITE and then proclaimed it her own.

I'm thinking of getting an Insight red dot fitted to it, along with the higher fixed sights that allow you to co-witness. I'm been reading the stuff on red-dot service pistols on Gabe Suarez' site and I have to admit I'm intrigued...

On first glance it seems like a no brainer, on the other hand  it raises 3 questions.
1  Where will you get holsters that fit ?
2   Kind of defeats the idea of buying a "Compact" pistol if you are going to increase the height by an inch or so.
3  Aren't we supposed to minimize the chances of "snags" that can hang up your draw in a life or death situation ?

While you can come up with "presidential solution" to Item 1, do you really want to start going at your holsters with a Razor knife ?
My personal opinion is that this is probably a fantastic set up for open carry, but there is not enough gain in accuracy, ( we are talking "Minute of Mutt" here, not X ring precision ) to justify the increases in bulk or potential for snagging in a civilian setting.

Picked up my FNP-45 today, hoping to get to the range tomorrow to try it out! Sorry for the picture quality, but
I am not that good with a camera.

The 1911 was my fathers day/birthday present from my wife.

The FNP-45 has a very large (IMHO) grip and is not what I would consider for CCW.  However, if you are going to be carrying off-body then the concealment issue has a lot more room for the large weapon.  Tucker Gun Leather makes a nice kydex/leather holster called Silent Thunder that will accommodate the FNP-45.  It can be ordered as IWB or OWB.  I'm sure there are others as well but I really like the Silent Thunder so I pimp it any chance I get.   ;D

I don't know why but this pistol has grabbed my attention. I have not held one or shot one yet but everytime I go to the gun store I see one and it calls to me. I would like to get a 9mm so I could free up more funds for practice. Shooting 45 is killing me and I am suffering for the lack of actual firing practice.

The FN9 is a fantastic pistol. Get one if you can. Mine even shoots that Tula, 115gr. 9mm or any other brand of "not top shelf" ammo without issue.

For carry, which is very possible in the right holster, i.e. Galco Summer Comfort, I like the Winchester SXT's or Cor-Bon DPX, I even like the 147gr Georgia Arms JHP's. The pistol just eats it up.

I think the FNP-45 is a little too beefy for CCW, but that's just me. I'm starting to see some holsters for dot-sight handguns, and it shouldn't be that much of a big deal to make them. I have carted the big FNP as a briefcase gun when I had to go to DA BIG CITY DOWN THE HILL, because you can never be underarmed on field trips...
