Stubbies, glasses banned at Queensland pubs and clubs
CHRISTINE KELLETT
March 5, 2010
Eight Queensland pubs and clubs have been slapped with total bans on the use of glass - including stubbies - as the state government shifts its alcohol-fulled violence campaign up a gear.
Liquor licensing authorities initially warned 77 venues across the state could be stripped of their right to serve drinks in glassware after compiling police figures and late-night trading hours.
All 77 were issued with ''show cause'' notices last year, forcing them to justify why they should be allowed to keep glass on the premises.

Of those, the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation has found eight present too high a risk.
"High risk establishments will no longer be able make regular glass receptacles, jugs, bottles or stubbies available to patrons,” Liquor Licensing Minister Peter Lawlor said today.
"Instead they must replace their regular glass with alternatives like toughened, tempered or polycarbonate glassware."
The remaining 69 venues are not off the hook, however.
They will be subject to restrictions on glass products in their venues and or have to submit a risk management plan to satisfy authorities they can keep patrons safe.
Under the restrictions regime, some of the 69 bars or clubs which have a restaurant on the premises may still be allowed to use drinking glasses on the dining floor, or serve wine from bottles.
Despite insisting the move is for public safety, the state government this morning refused to name the eight venues now considered too dangerous to drink from a glass.
"There is now a judicial process in place, so we won't be saying which ones they are," a ministerial spokeswoman told brisbanetimes.com.au.
The state government has justified the controversial glass bans on the back of at least 45 separate glassing attacks on Queensland licensed premises last year.
"Glassings destroy lives and it’s a situation that is just unacceptable," Mr Lawlor said.
"While there is no doubt that individuals must take responsibility for their actions, licensed establishments also must realise their responsibilities to patron safety and harm minimisation.
"The Queensland government is determined to tackle alcohol-fuelled violence – this is about keeping people safe."
Comment was being sought from venue operators this morning.

Yup its true, in places where there has been high incidents of "glassing" ie breaking bottles and slashing, stabbing people the powers that be think that by removing glass from the equation wil solve the issue. They fail to realise that in doing so that the person will now just pick up a bar stool, pool que etc.
Perhaps instead of arresting people for being thugs, idiots and F#cktards and then having our pussy whipped court system say oh poor johnny had his mummy smack his bot bot when he was a child hence now he has anger issues and let them off, they actually put these bastards on the road to recovery, IE Chain Gangs, National Service, etc!

A MAGISTRATE has ruled the terms 'sandn---r' and 'ni---r' not offensive to a reasonable person.
Queensland magistrate Michael O'Driscoll made the ruling yesterday when he dismissed a case against a Gold Coast retiree charged with sending an offensive facsimile to a local politician.
A staff member working for Broadwater MP Peta-Kaye Croft complained to police after receiving the document from 62-year-old Denis Mulheron of Labrador on June 30 last year, the Gold Coast Bulletin reports.
Christie Turner, 28, told Southport Magistrates Court she was deeply offended when she read the one-page fax which called on the Labor Party to tighten immigration laws against "n----rs" and "sandn----r terrorists" and Muslim women with circumcised genitals.
The fax also made reference to indigenous Australians as 'Abos'.
Mr Mulheron told the court he believed he was using 'everyday English' in the fax.
He said he had grown up with the slang terms for Arabs and black Africans and did not believe they were offensive.
"I'm not a member of the cafe, chardonnay and socialist set ... to me that is everyday language," he said.
Ms Turner said to her, as a young woman, Mr Mulheron's words were both offensive and disturbing.
"There are appropriate ways to express opinions about immigration policies and this was not one of them," she said.
Mr Mulheron was charged with using a carriage service, namely a fax machine, to menace, harass or offend - a offence which carries a maximum penalty of three years in jail.
After lengthy consideration, Mr O'Driscoll ruled that Mr Mulheron's words were not enough to invoke criminal sanctions.
"The words used were crude, unattractive and direct but were not offensive to a reasonable person," he said.
But he made it clear the court in no way condoned Mr Mulheron's comments.
