The imam behind a plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero is set to depart on a multi-country jaunt to the Middle East funded by the State Department -- raising concerns that taxpayers may be helping him with the controversial project's $100 million fund-raising goal.
Feisal Abdul Rauf is taking the publicly funded trip to foster "greater understanding" about Islam and Muslim communities in the United States, the State Department confirmed yesterday.
"He is a distinguished Muslim cleric," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley, when asked about the journey, reportedly to include stops in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Qatar.
"I think we are in the process of arranging for him to travel as part of this program, and it is to foster a greater understanding about the region around the world among Muslim-majority communities," he added.

You know, there seems to be a lot of controversy about building this mosque in the shadow of "Ground Zero".
To those who support the construction, I wonder how their parents would have felt had there been a proposal to build a Shinto Temple in the shadow of Pearl Harbor?

Half the population of Affghanistan is under 25, and its not far ahead of other muslim states. They can't find jobs at home so......But nobody says we have to take them. Will someone have the balls to revisit the 1965 immigration law and say Oops!, maybe national quotas weren't such a bad idea after all? I refuse to see demographics as destiny. Just because you won't practice responsible birth control doesn't mean you get to rule the world, much less this country. >:(

Mostly in Eastern European and Italian ones, but point taken. I don't endorse eugenics. Still, I don't want 12 kids. If you do, fine. Have them in Saudi Arabia or Algeria.

Check your history. Racism wasn't just a black and white thing in the early 19th century. Hell, Eastern Europeans, jews and Italians weren't even definatively white by law. The idea was to prevent breeding by the "lower classes". The point is, it was bigger than blacks. Anyone with too many consonants in their last name qualified, as did hillybilly recidivists like my folks, as well as blacks. There's actually a lot of interesting literature on this. It is scary and bizarre and ranges up until the present day with guys like James Q. Wilson and Charles Murray and Bill Bennett.

Goes all the way back to the beginning, no primitive languages contain a word for stranger, but they all contain words for "outsider" and "enemy".
No matter how much touchy feely crap any one wants to spew, there is "us" and "them" the whole rest of the world, Them" are obviously inferior beings, because they are not us, they are at best competition, at worst an actual threat and are not to be trusted.
