Title: S&W Bone Collector
Post by: MikeBjerum on August 14, 2010, 02:12:29 PM

Is it just me or does the human skull in the antlers go too far and cheapen a good thing?

A nice hunting gun, and the European mount looks nice, but the human skull doesn't fit in my opinion.

When it comes to modern design, all most always, 'less is more'.  Less engravings, less colors, less human skulls.  'The Bone Collector' isn't exactly a classy name for a weapon either.  Same as 'The Judge', some firearms folks have been listening to too much metal...

Cool effect, tacky use of it. IMO

Edited to add ;
Might make a cool tatoo

Saw it at the NRA Show in Charlotte. The other S&W 500 series X-frames were/are monster pistols....The picture does not do it justice as to its size.

The bell & whistle engraving does nothing for me, the standard 500 in SS is fine. Especially when the zombies drive dump trucks.

But seriously, that thing is BIG!!!.

If you hunt people with it the skull is appropriate.  :)

Yeah, those tags are expensive though, and all the paper work...

The Logo is Michael Waddells's who is a very nice guy and has a good hunting show, also on OC, it commerates his show, if you are defending your life against another human with a .500 mag, it is because its the only  gun you own, or its all you have with you, full house .41 mag is about as high as I go for control and power, demonstrated it for 65 rds, split my hand open at 50, but continued, just hated bleeding on the revolver, 4" S&W 57, these were 210 grn 1400 fps loads. What I use for hunting.

Not much into engraving period. I like plain wood and case colors on my side by sides. However, while the skull is a bit tacky and in your face, it is a 10.5" .500 revolver. Subtle it ain't! ;D Its kind of like putting Yosemite Sam mud flaps and a Dale Earnhardt sticker on your jacked up 4wd F-350. Why the hell not? You're not fooling anbody any way. ;D
FQ13 who says that if ever there was a place for a pistol bayonet (or maybe a tripod)..... ;D

Now that is the way a 500 should look ... at least that is why I invested in it  ;D

If I had a working camera you would get the current look with a real nice Eotech on top  ;D

What do you do with a gun like that?  Mostly plink, but it is great for whitetail at well over 100 yards.

10.5 inches and four pounds unloaded? You've obviously been working out your forearms! ;D When a pistol advertises swing swivels as a standard option, I tend to pause. The engraving is the least of my concerns. An interesting gun for a niche market, which it will probably fill nicely, but I want something as powerful and a lot shorter. I'm looking at delivering a bear smacker at 100 feet, not 100 yards, and I want to wear it in a hip holster.

while working at a FFL I got to play with one of the protypes...  it was 100 oz empty...  graco has a sweet holster for the x frame...IMO its reason enough to buy one.

Richard - You ever shoot a .44 mag?

Less felt recoil and more comfortable than that!

That said, fifty rounds in an afternoon, and you will feel it in your elbows.  Even knowing that I just can't stop plinking ... pass the asprin bottle please  :-\

Owned a 61/2" 29 for a while and shot it a lot with FE reloads but that was when I was a lot younger and my wrists and albows were in better shape.  Would love to have a 4" 29 but have other things more.

Richard

PS:  Would not under any circumstances shoot full house loads in a 4".  JMHO

Thats kind of like your African Big Game rifle. You shoot it enough to be accurate, but not so much as to develop a flinch. A hundred rounds or so spread out over days, check your zero, but otherwise leave it alone unless you're shooting at game. Its why I am attracted to the Cassul, you can shoot .45s all day long. Though if you reload, you could make some weak ones for the .500. One more reason to buy the supplies I suppose.

Why by the .454 then  ???  If you are going to shoot .45 lc, buy a .45 lc.  I have an assortment of the small calibers, but I wanted a big boy, and I shoot a big boy with big boy ammo.

If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen!!!

I was thinkinking cost (for the .45s) as well as intensity of practice. Shoot 20 full power, or 40 lower powered rounds. Whatever works for you. Again, if you reload, its a non-issue. Howeverl, when I was practising for duck season I still shot my skeet rounds with 2 3/4 inch  low brass #8s, not three inch #2s. YMMV. ;D.
