Title: Spike TV
Post by: MikeBjerum on August 21, 2010, 09:02:11 AM
Has anyone seen the new shows on Spike TV on Saturday mornings?  I over slept this morning and having a slow start trying to get enough black stuff in me ... rough week.  I found some new listings on Spike - Practical Tactical; Because Lives Depend On It (what I'm watching now, and it appears good); What If; Conceal & Carry School.

Has anyone else seen these, and what do you think?

I caught the last one minute of Practical Tactical, and it appeared to have been on shotguns.  Don't know the context, so shouldn't be too critical, but they were reviewing a new shot load that had a 1 oz slug and three 00 buck in one shell.  They also talked of "racking the slide" as a way of scaring off the average felon.  I'd like to see it all before agreeing or disagreeing.

I did have Because Lives Depend On It on for the whole episode, and like what I saw.  They talked of skills being perishable, practice being needed, training being important, and they used the El Presidente as an evaluation tool for real life needs.  Over all a good show.

OK ... I now love Because Lives Depend On It, because they went to the Sig Sauer School for Survival, and the instructor called the 1911 the ultimate carry gun ... the same big ass gun I carry on my over sized fat waste  ;D

I watched it a couple of weeks ago when a friend was in the "What If" segment but not since.  Turning on the TV at 7:00 AM on a Saturdays is just wrong unless you are 6 - 12 years old.  I wish they would find a better time slot for it as it did seem interesting.

Forgive oh great grammar checker  ;)  It's been a bad week, and I'm multi-tasking between gun shows and gun sites  ;D

By ultimate I think they meant in weight.

I happened to catch "What If", yesterday and I was somewhat disappointed.  The episode was a about a gang shooting in the China Town area  of San Francisco.  They said the gang members were using twelve gauge shotguns and .45 semi auto rifles.  The reenactment, however, showed the gunmen carrying shotguns and AKs.  I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure AKs don't come in .45.  Come on folks, this show supposedly caters to people like us who WILL notice stuff like that.   :-[

I thought it was what came out of fat assets (government in particular).

That's exactly what I was thinking. It was like watching a re-enactment that would be seen on those lame news "magazine" shows.

Don't Be a Victim was directly "inspired" by The Best Defense. The goal was to take self-defense to the SPIKE market, which has about 10 times the audience of the OC. In that regard, more people being aware of the realities of self-defense is a good thing.

From a production and budgeting standpoint, the resources they put behind the show are pretty impressive. Many of the folks involved as subject-matter experts are also knowledgeable about weapons and tactics. However, unlike the production staff of The Best Defense, the DBAV folks are not seasoned shooters and gun guys.

Stay safe,

Mike

I watch them, just so I can blog about it. To my knowledge the current line-up is What If?, Because Lives Depend on It, Pracitcal Tactical, and Conceal Carry School.

So far, Practical Tactical is my favortie, just becuase it appears to cover a greater variety of material and in a practical manner.

There's also a Personal Defense TV on the Outdoorsman Channel (I only noticed it after I got HD, so I don't know if it's new or not). This show is a Guns & Ammo affiliated show and use their style folks. It's a pretty good show, but I usually don't like their hand-to-hand stuff.

Not new, Tom Gresham's show has been on for a couple years now.

With a ton of desk work to do, I chose to have Spike on for the last couple hours.  Overall I would give the good usable marks.  I don't agree with everything, but I praise them for some things.  This is why God gave us a complex brain and the ability to reason.  I can take all of this information, my past knowledge, my skill sets, and after today I have climbed another rung on the two million rung ladder of life.

Anyone that thinks they are going to watch one of these shows, or any show, and get only perfect information and be an expert is dangerous.  But, I would be willing to recommend these shows as a source of good information to be filtered and added to anyone's mindset.

You don't have to be vague.  It is ok to mention Tom, Masad, Tiger, and all the others on here ... we don't care.  Hell we even talk about Jim Scoutten, his spawn and the rest of the crew on here  ;)

That's a point I want to repeat. I brought it up to Rob. We appreciate the fact that this isn't the "shameless commerce" board like too many are. Still, y'all are providing the dance floor. Nobody will object if you post a schedule of classes or dates of shows or website URLs. Some would be grateful for the info and the rest won't mind. Just my .02.

Did I mention to you guys that I'm doing a DVD, actually a couple of DVDs, expanding on the stuff in TRAIL SAFE? I'm doing this in my "spare time," so I may be finished before the glaciers begin moving south again. Writing on THE NEW SURVIVAL GUNS is going pretty well...fun to write a book again! So much so I called my old agent at William Morris to let him know I'd rediscovered my word processor.

Actually, all this is a sophisticated way to keep me from finishing FIVE TO GO, Worsham!
