Title: Shopping list!
Post by: Timothy on August 28, 2010, 08:07:38 PM
OK, some are aware that I'm moving to Connecticut very soon.  With that move, I will be able to buy any handgun made with very few exceptions.  I already have a very well broken in 1911 and won't be looking for anything other than a small pocket or light, striker fired 9mm.  I have some time to shop as I won't be able to buy for several months due to the laws here.

I'm leaning towards anything other than a Glock or M&P, I have nothing against them, I just don't like the feel of them, call me fickle...

Suggestions are welcome!

(don't tell Jaybet.....I held an SR9c today and really, really, really liked it....)

Thanks in advance.. ;)

CZ sp01 tactical or phantom!!

Try one, youll like it!
I have the cz85b combat and it is a faultless performer. My next will be the phantom, they come with 4 mags as standard here in oz.

EAA Witness, they seem to be good guns and they look cool  ;D

Requirements:  Compact, lightweight, concealable......

I already have a full size handgun, a small revolver and access to several others.

I was going to head down this road as well.  I would think with the Glock and M&P off the list go for a Kahr 9mm, Ruger SR9c, or the Walther PPS.  The Kahr and Walther are going to be more expensive but I have read good things about them.  The Ruger I have seen for as little as $379 at a gun show.  I would stay away from the Taurus 709 based on experiences I have read on the internet and handling one.  The other three guns I mentioned just seemed to be built better.

Also have you thought about a compact 1911 in 9mm?  Springfield's EMP is expensive but I know they are good guns.  I have shot my brother-in-laws' and wish I had the money for one.  Again that is going to be around twice to three times the amount of the other three guns I mentioned.

CZ Rami 40S&W would make a good choice. I had one until i had to sell it to fix my trans.

Not to be cliche, but if you want a small cheap 9mm, and are anti-glock, there is always the Kel-tec Pf-9. I didn't like the the p-11, but the 9 is smaller and has a lighter trigger. I'd shoot it before turning my nose up as the price is right.

Or a plinker ? Can't go wrong with a good .22, Browning BuckMark ?

Kahr seems like a decent gun just ridiculously priced.

Plinking I have covered though a Buckmark may still be in the future.  A compact 1911 in 9mm is a good idea too, just trying to keep the weight down under 20 oz which is making me lean toward a Kel-Tec.  The Walther PPS looks good on paper but I've handled one and I didn't like it at all, every time I released the mag it hit the palm of my hand and won't fall free without problems.  Terrible design IMO.....

and I'm not anti Glock....they just don't feel right to me.  Same thing with the M&P and neither are small enough for what I'm looking for..  I'm looking for a "drop in the pocket", go anywhere gun.  I really like the Ruger but it's still heavy at 24 oz, not much lighter than my snubby.

So many choices, what a great quandary to be facing..

:D

Richard

Been looking for one to play with.  They're not available in MA so I've gotta wait till next week and visit my old gun shop in CT.  It's on the short list but still a bit heavy.

I just bought a Ruger SR9 compact, like it's ergonomics.

I do too, they point nicely, sights come up naturally for me.  They must have a grip angle close to the 1911.  Any thoughts and a range report would be great!

My H&K P2000 Sub-compact in 9mm is a great pistol.  Yes, it is pricey but you get what you pay for (as long as customer service is not an issue from what I have heard.)  3" barrel but extremely accurate and no mechanical issues and I have about 2,000 rounds through her.  She is a little wide making it less than ideal for summer carry, but worth a look to see if it is a nice fit for you.

There's a pretty thorough review of the SR9s in this month's American Rifleman. Usually I don't trust those articles as they seem to just be a suck up to the "sponsor of the month", but having famously owned an SR9, I thought it was actually a good article. The gun handles well and the ergonomics are awesome unless you have grizzly paws for hands. My issue was the post-recall trigger, which I couldn't charactarize any more civilly than to call it crap.

TO HIS CREDIT, author Wiley Clapp mentions at the end of the article that the trigger is "...gritty and has some movement" "...not an easy system to use for great accuracy..." and for "...self defense, it's acceptable." Acceptable? The article lists the trigger pull at ten pounds. 10.
Think about that for a second.

I bring this up for a few reasons:
1) You need to know about the trigger. If you want to shoot for accuracy you've got a chore ahead of you. Just for pulling out of your pocket and letting go point blank, you're good to go. Don't get me wrong...other than the trigger that I could just never stop pulling shots with, I think the gun is awesome. It feels great, it's reliable, looks good, all that. AND it's one of the few pistols that felt good to me and my wife also liked when she shot it.

2) Ruger has been innovating like crazy in the pistol market, and you've got to give them credit for going out on a limb. I just can't see why they would go so far to create a really wonderful pistol but leave it with a trigger that excludes a large segment of buyers. Not everyone has the money for, the personal skills, or access to a smith so they can work the trigger. It's not perfect, so CLOSE, but no banana.

3) I've got to give a shout out to Wiley Clapp for writing an article that points out the shortcomings of the pistol in a magazine that often is just a mouthpiece for the advertisers. Good job dude.

I'm looking forward to DaverZ's report. Some people don't mind the trigger, and like I said, if you're looking simply for self defense this gun will sit right in your hand EVERY time you pull it out of your pocket. [color]

Thanks Jay, I knew you'd chime in.  I read the article this morning myself and I agree, they gave the gun a decent appraisal as opposed to a normal "don't piss off a sponsor" type.

I missed the bit about the weight of the trigger though, 10 pounds is pretty stout but was probably done to get it to comply with CA and MA requirements for DAO guns.  I've read somewhere that they can be lessened and I'm hoping that MB will give me some info on that.  I've PM'd him with some questions.  My snubby is down around 10 since I did a spring replacement but it's consistent and crisp.

I have plenty of time, not a bunch of money and a vast inventory to choose from so I will be taking all advice and probably spend a whole day at Cabelas in Hartford feeling them all up before I buy.  They have the largest inventory of firearms outside of Kittery Trading Post in downeast Maine.

Keep em coming boys.

I have an EAA Witness Compact in .40, great grip, can be carried cocked & locked, or have DA option.

No plastic frame. Slightly heavier.

The CZ 75 or other CZ variants would also be great choice. The Kel-Tec PF-9 very lightweight and easily carried.

Have you looked at any of the new Taurus lines? Supposedly, the new compact line of 9mm's are getting good reviews.

Good luck in your quest!

"Feelin' 'em all up is the best part"!!!
Oh- also, there is some after market trigger kit for the SR9 that was on a previous thread here, but I know nothing about it.

Speaking as a Mainer, you just pissed a lot of people off calling Kittery "Downeast".

I stand corrected.  I was just repeating what most people consider the area to be!  Forgive me, local Mainers are good folks!

I'm a Michigander, not a New England-er...I'm just held captive by circumstance!   ;)

Thanks!

In all honesty, I should know that, I've lived in the Northeast for 28 years.

The more I look at the Taurus line of new 9mm, I'm kinda liking them.

Anyone have one?

Missed going to the range monday and tuesday but today is the day, taking the wife and heading out early, probably bout 7 this morning.BTW I've read the trigger pull now is between 5.2 and 5.5 now, feels that way dry firing.
