I know you fella's hit on this topic some time back (fun thread to read). But having just now seen the re-run of the "ramming" I'm pretty disgusted with the stupid "Hippy Pirates" and Discovery Ch. for not disclaiming their hippy lies.
It was painfully obvious the hippy idiots did a Kamakazi run into the front of the whaler! In the video you see a very small prop wash off the ady gil until just before the whaler passes, then you see huge prop wash as they gun it just in time to get in front of the whaler.

I heard the idiot captain of the ady gil is in jail now. Is it because the busted him for doing this? I HOPE SO!!!
I think we should take up a collection to buy this paint job for all the whaler's boats! ;D

Where can I buy some whale steaks to eat while I watch the next episode? ;D

"I guess I do feel sorry for the whales," said Shun Ishimura, 7, shyly fiddling with his L.A. Dodgers T-shirt. Like many of the children, he was tasting whale flesh for the first time. He said that despite his feelings, he "ate it anyway because it looked so good. And when I ate it, I liked it. Whale is really delicious."
This guy looks pretty happy to be on/in the can.

They are running a
Pirate Whale Wars marathon today. I just checked, and at 9:00 PM eastern they will have a new episode where dip sh*t talks about his time in a Japanese jail.
Over the next couple hours will be his getting on board ... damn surprised he didn't get killed during that!
Only reason I watch is to raise my blood pressure and root for the Japanese.
By the way, if you watch the episode where the Ady was hit they make it sound and look like the black boat was disabled and stranded when it was hit. When you watch the Japanese footage it is obvious that they sunk themselves to try and set the Japanese up. Amazing that there are tree huggers out there that fall for this crap >:(

Stump a hippy: If a venus fly trap can "feel" a fly in its mouth, it can feel pain. So if plants can feel pain how dare hippys kill them for food?!? This means vegitarians are vicious killers just like everyone else!
"WHAT NOW HIPPY?" :o
(I know /you know this is crazy, but if challenging a hippy with it could lead to them starving themselves to death..." ;D

A real hippy will not only eat meat, but raise/hunt it herself. It was about a back to the land, off the grid, anti-corporate lifestyle. Perdue=bad, yard chickens=good. Im not that committed, but I respect it. This PETA inspired anorexic veggie nonsense, since that has "zero impact" and chickens are people too???????? Give me a break. I have zero problem with real hippies as long as they bathe. The wannabe's, them I have issues with.

+1 Today's "hippie" is to often a dumb #@$ celebrity or politician (uhum, Al Gore cough, cough) who dreams up a "save the whatevers plan" just to get attention or scam on the American public.

I stumbled upon this forum a few weeks ago and have been reading old posts and checking things out since then. For the most part, I have enjoyed it but haven't seen anything that compelled me to register and reply until recently. The first topic was the drunk baboons, and the second was this one.
I don't want to make a bad first impression, but I would like to say some things about this topic.
First off, let me clarify a few things about myself. I am a gun toting, hunting, fishing, superduty driving, meat eating guy who is nowhere near being a hippy. However, I'm also a wildlife biologist, and that leads me take up for the animals on some occasions.
As Americans, we are blessed in so many ways, but that hasn't stopped us from being some of the greediest folks out there. Just look at what we've done to our own natural resources in the last couple hundred years. Do a little research on the passenger pigeon; a bird so plentiful that it would surely never go extinct. Or the number of bison that used to roam the plains, even in the East. Or the number of large predators that we've killed just for the sake of killing. My point is that just because there's an animal out there that we can kill, it doesn't mean that we should kill them all.
About the show, the first time I saw it a few years ago, my first impression was that they were ecoterrorists/pirates. As I watched a few more episodes (forgive me, I got bored it was on), I've about come to the conclusion that their intentions are good but their tactics are lacking. As daddy would say, "They've got the right string, but the wrong yo-yo." I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with following the whalers around trying to stop them, but I think they cross the pirate line with launching objects and attempts to board other vessels.
My take home point is that maybe it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to think twice before eating that whale steak.
Thanks for putting up with such a long post.
-
mkm - welcome aboard, glad you decided to post.
As to your points, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Just look into the eyes of that whack job of a captain and tell us again how their tactics are "lacking". It is my truly HO that he doesn't give a rat's ass if his people live or die - he has an agenda and nothing will get in his way of advancing that agenda. The rest of his crew - the few I've seen actually - are brain-dead idealistic sheeple who "believe in the cause".
As for whale steaks, to each their own. I'm a cattleman, and no problem with people eating whatever grows out in the world.
Don't worry about saying things that might rub people the wrong way here. If you have an honest belief, no problem. Back it up with facts? Even better. We seem to relish a good discussion.
Can I get some A-1 for this whale steak? ? ? ? ;D
-
MKM, good to see you posting.
I have heard two reasons for stopping the hunting of whales. I don't know if either is valid. Perhaps you might have that knowledge.
The first reason is that they are in danger of becoming extinct if hunted at the current rate.
The second reason is that they may posses intelligence close to humans.
Any answers?
Also, Dolphins... They are said to have high intelligence also.
Further, they seem to be species unique in befriending humans in need with no prior reward or incentive, from carrying they to safety when drowning to protecting humans from sharks. (although sharks are KOS to dolphins anyway...I've heard)
Any incidents of humans being attacked or harmed by dolphins?
Thanks for any answers you might be able to provide.
Take care.

Yes. General rule: no matter how cute or friendly an animal, do NOT get between a mother and her child!

mkm,
I think I speak for everyone in saying thanks for joining in the forum & discussion! That's what any forum is all about, sharing information and opinions so we can all learn together. Well, I guess that's my opinion anyway. ;D
Can you imagin working on that whaling ship and getting hit in the head by one of the glass bottles the hippies are throwing!?! Entirely possible it may kill, at least blind you. Pathfinder put it perfectly when he said "The road to hell is paved with good intentions".
As far as not killing them because their intelligent... "Then God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitfull and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.""
I agree 100% we shouldn't hunt them to extinction. But at the current rate it's FAR from an issue. Years ago SURE. Not now.
As I understand it, some shady companies sell dolphin meat as whale because it's way cheaper. Supposedly, nobody could tell the differance...
"And they called him Flipper, Flipper!"

Pass that A1 Pathfinder. I'll get you a beer. ;D

I'll join the welcome, have fun, voice your opinion, let us beat you up and support you, and help us all learn together crowd.
I'll also join the crowd that points out another side of this:
I started the other thread on this, and it is not about hunting whales. My issue is with the fact that the sea shepherds are nothing more than a bunch of pirates ... sorry Peg for the comparison ;)
Whether the Japanese are right or wrong in what they are doing, I believe that the clowns in the black crafts need to be shot on sight, and that Pete should have been hung!
I also question why no nation stands up against Japan if what they are doing is wrong, and I point out that when the ady was sunk the Japanese ship was not found at fault by an international organization.
-
mkm:
Welcome to our little dysfunctional family.
First of all, thank you for the insight you provide. I must admit that you caused me to think in ways other than I would have normally thought on this topic.
That being said, I have to agree with the seemingly prevailing sentiment here. These yahoos are little more than militant vigilantes. The guys on the whaling ships are attempting to make a living in an (apparently) lawful pursuit. The actions of the idiots who are trying to stop them from doing so are tantamount to somebody who would assault a slaughterhouse worker because they wanted to protect cows.
They get hurt or jailed.....tough poop. They're lucky the whalers don't take stronger defensive measures.
Again, thanks for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you better. Take care!!

And boycotting the meat means it just goes to waste.
-
Meat's meat and it doesn't matter if it is Beef, Elk Chicken or Whale to me. Whale Wars is just another example of the Lunatic Fringes trying to force their beliefs upon the population as a whole. The facts are that only a very small portion of the Earths seas have been explored and no one...NO ONE knows exactly what if any impact the Japanese hunting whales has done to the current population.
The Japanese culture is based on food taken from the seas...Just as the United States culture is based around Beef, Pork and Chicken. If some Eco Terrorist group from another country began disrupting the food supplies of our coutry I bet there would be bloodshed over it long before now.
Restrictions are already in place...leave the Japanese alone and concentrate on enforcing the rules already in place....And that includes the Anti-Pirate/Terrorist ones.
I still say the best episode of Whale Wars will be the one when the Steve Irwin slips beneath the waves and Paul Watson is led to Prison in Handcuffs. This idiot is nothing more than a criminal who has managed to twist the laws and evade a cell.
This is the real Paul Watson

why is the Discovery Ch putting to air a show that supports the Terrorist group ???
I have no issues with sustainable whaling.
shame the Caption of the Addi Giil got away with out doing more gaol time should of locked him up longer.

+10 Rat.

From the link in rats post (GREAT ONE BTW!):
Watson is a terrorist who has said that "earthworms are far more valuable than people."
"There's nothing wrong with being a terrorist, as long as you win. Then you write history."
-- Paul Watson
WOW! I wish he could hear me tell a waiter. "I can't finish all this. Just wrap my whale steak and dolphin ribs up in a crisp baby seal skin and I'll take it home for later!

You sure? I don't like thinking about it being worse, but it could be.
-
Don't know if it's new or not, but I watched a South Park episode last night where they made Paul Watson out to be a lying idiot poser (pretty accurate there I guess). Turns out the Japanese were killing all the whales and dolphins because someone had given them a photo of the Enola Gay right at the end of the war that showed a dolphin pilot and killer whale bombadier. Kyle gave them the "real" photo showing that it was actually a chicken and a cow, so the Japs busied themselves f*** you chickens and f*** you cows! and killing chickens and cows intead.
Why couldn't Watson come up with something like that?
-
I'm back. It's been a very long and stressful week; hence, the delayed reply.
I don't guess I made myself fully clear in my first post. I have no doubt Paul Watson is a crazy lunatic that admitedly doesn't care about the lives or safety of his crew. I am also not condoning the aggressive tactics of ramming ships, launching projectiles, or boarding ships without permission. That does make them pirates. What I meant by their tactics are lacking is that there should be more legitimate ways to accomplish their goals than piracy.
I haven't done as much research on the subject as I would like, but there is at least a moratorium on commercial whaling at the moment. From what I've seen, Japan may very well be doing scientfic research, but they do seem awfully concerned about the commercial aspect of whaling. I have spent enough time in the scientific community to know that science can occaisionally be abused for the sake of profit. Whales are not rapid breeders. The current rate of whaling may not be as bad as the historical numbers, but the scars of history take time to heal. A few decades ago, white-tailed deer and wild turkeys were a rare sight in the Southeast; now, they are plentiful allowing for generous hunting seasons. Given enough time, there may be a place for sustainable whaling, but I don't think that time is now. I am generally a proponent of conservation over preservation, but at some point preservation becomes critical.
"If the biota, in the course of aeons, has built something we like but do not understand, then who but a fool would discard seemingly useless parts? To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering." -Aldo Leopold
Just because some idots in a few black ships try to make their point with piracy, doesn't mean we should take a completely opposite stance on the subject out of spite. Historically, true sportsmen have done more for the preservation of wildlife and the environment than most others. People, especially those who love the outdoors and firearms, need to consider the impacts of their actions.
PS. Yall thought I posted and ran didn't you. ;)
-
Not at all mkm, I also watched "The Cove" which has a small Japanese coastal town that lures very effectively, dolphins into a cove and nets is off, and slaughters them for meat. NO scientific research at all. Here's the official trailer.
The former trainer of the original "Flipper" is leading an active role in fighting and exposing this, and has done so for years.
The acts of Watson, and his crew does result in piracy. However, the IWC, (Int. Whaling Comm.), is corrupt. Japan literally "buys off" countries that don't even see whales, like Barbados, Martinique, Antilles, and they sit on the IWC.
(Kinda as effective as the U.N.),... As I also posted, we allow Eskimo's to club seals, and also harvest whales each year.
The rational for Japan, as well as Eskimo's, is "part of our culture and heritage"....
I agree with you and others, there is no real need to hunt and kill these creatures anymore, but piracy, vandalism, and criminal acts at sea, should have consequences.
-
I watched this past season and the Japanese are definitely getting tired of the Sea Shepherds. The ship that hit the Ady Gil was pretty aggressive. Of course, the Steve Irwin hit a Japanese ship last year so they probably feel justified. (I know that I would be pretty pissed if someone rammed my truck on the way to the deer stand.) I don't really find myself siding with either group but it did make for some interesting TV.

Careful on talking about the Ady Gill incident. I agree that the Japanese ship was being aggressive, but in the videos you can see that the Ady was under power in contradiction to the claims of the shepherds ... little boat vs. ship ... big boy has right of way ... they shouldn't have been under power into the path of the Japanese ship.
-
Careful about what? All I said was the other ship had been being aggressive. Running interference was all that ship was there to do as it was not the factory ship or a harpoon ship. The sea shepherds were aggressive too. When you have two aggressive parties something is bound to happen. Someone needs to calm this entire thing down.
-
In my opinion the Japanese are showing great restraint in this. With the acts of piracy being committed by the Sea Shepherds much more force on the part of the whaling ships is justified.
They put up with bottles of acid being thrown on their decks, prop foulers being deployed in contact with their vessels, an attempt to damage an engine on their largest vessel, and an illegal boarding.
I think the Japanese are playing the public relations battle and coming out ahead on that. However, what will the Sea Shepherds do if next season the security vessel and the processing ship arrive with firearms for their own protection?
-
Your comment reminds me of the air guns the Japanese had on that ship that they tried to use for pepper spray, mace, or something. It is not really funny but I couldn't help but to laugh a little when they didn't factor in the wind. They ended up just spraying themselves down. Those poor guys burned their own eyes and faces pretty bad. I'd hate to see what they would do with real guns.

+1 all the way. Jap's should send a sub to escort their ships. Now THAT'D be interesting tv! ;D

If you apply maritime navagation rules, the ady gil was in the right, they were the stand on vessle. It does not matter if they are under power or afloat. they had the right away.
