Title: I may be nuts but I think I want a .375 Winchester Big Bore
Post by: Conagher 45 on September 06, 2010, 08:34:33 PM
I have a chance to get my hands on a 94 Big Bore, I have been told that these rifles are not that acurate and had some problems. Was wondering if any one here shoots one of these. From what I have read in the loading manuals and and a few articals that I have found they are a good woods rifle and some even shoot it in single shot pistol on the encore frame. Any opinions here would be appreciated.

I haven't heard of them and I doubt I'm alone. Can you give us a little info so we can broaden our horizons?

Its a beefed up 94 lever gun and the round is simular to the .38-55 but has a little more attitude.  Hope the attached pic comes trough.

I don't think there was any "trouble" with them per say. I think they had a hard time competing with the Marlin 1895 series in .45-70, .444 Marlin, and the newer .450 Marlin. This became more apparent when Marlin introduced the Guide Guns. The shorter fast handling big bore carbines sold well, and are still doing so. I looked at one a while back, but seeing as I already have a .45-70 Guide Gun, I really couldn't justify it. If the price is right, and the gun is in nice shape, I see no reason not to grab it other than ammunition and brass could be a little hard to come by seeing as it never was produced in any viable numbers.   Bill T.

Conagher here is an excellent article by John Taffin on this very rifle, I think it will answer your questions, the Big Bore 94 was just ill timed, as was the .356,  .307 good rifles, do you have big and I mean big game to deal with? I do own and use and love my .338 Win mag, not really necessary here in Texas, except it excels at Nilgai, 350 to 800 + lbs. I got it for Elk, that someday, I wish I have the opportunity to point it at.

Just finished reading Taffins artical even save it to my favorites. This rifle cartridge is just what I suspected, very versitile with some of the new powders that are out now. A friend of mine in San Antonio wants me to come down and go pig hunting and I thought this would do a lot better on them tuff Texas bore than my .30-30. I don't own a really big bore rifle so this just might be the ticket and T/C still offers a 15" barrel for the encore pistol too.  8)

For years I wanted a .375 barrel for my Contender, but I quit hunting and it would have just been a big bore plinker.

I truly regret not getting the Quigley sharps when I had and FFL, 2 yr wait, and it was 1900 bucks with select wood and a little engraving, live and learn.

What was that movie quote? "Two dollars a round? You just wasted 12 bucks and didn't hit anything. I killed one guy and it only cost $4.25"!
Moral of the story? At $11 a round regular price, you better not miss. You'll never hear the end of it if you do. ;D
