Title: Computer thoughts
Post by: m25operator on September 11, 2010, 06:06:47 PM
I had a little web book crash on me last weekend, I really liked it, hired a trouble shooter over the internet, who was really good and if anybody wants a link, I will give it to you, reasonable price, and available 24/7, he walked through all the options and procedures, end result, dead hard drive. I have an Acer Aspire one, 10" web book, great screen, and intend to replace the hard drive which originally was 160gig, with a 300, and there is a lot of support, even video on how to disassemble the little guy and replace the HD, it seems I need to disassemble first to find out if I have the 1.8" sdd or the 2.5" hdd, apparently there a lot geeks hotrodding these little guys.

Any of you have and Acer and been down this road???

it will be a 2.5" 9.5 mm SATA HD

you can put just about any 2.5" SATA drive in as long as it 9.5mm or shorter in hight  some of the larger ( 750GB + drives are 12.5mm high)

if you want to put in a 2.5" SSD   however not sure if the $$$ would be worth it as they can still be quite expensive

this one would work quite well  http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=377

that is what I upgrade most people that want more space in there MacBooks

here is the how to do it  if you want to give it a crack your self

I had an Acer a long time ago. Worked OK for a while, then things strated breaking. When they demanded $30 for a PCMCIA cover (a small L-shaped length of plastic) I vowed I would never ever own another Acer-branded item, not even a monitor.

I have a acer netbook, using it now! I brought it to goto manila with, they are light, have good screens and thins one has the 250gb hd and I upped the ram to 2gb.
great for watching movies on long flights with or sending emails to loved ones or even posting on your favourite forums. Has enough power to do the things you want. I wouldnt load them up with a heap of applications though, just the essentials, ie dont load photoshop on it and expect it to render a pic quickly. Basic MS apps no issues, you could if youu want throw a ssd in them but hell thats a lot of money and it then stops being a cheap item and you may as well get a mac. just my thoughts

If you own a laptop now the odds are that acer has made most of its componentry. hehe

lets us know how it performs!

I like that they have sd ports etc so it makes it easy to up load photos etc and save them. They are a handy bit of kit!
Just the think to load ballistic software etc on when going to the range or keeping a record of your loads etc at the range. Lots of applications  ;D

Well you cant add a sound card if thats what you want to do.
There maybe some audio editing type of software you can use but I am not up with the different types that are available.
Audio on a netbook is a bit like trying to play mozart on a toy piano, no matter how good you are its never really going to sound the same as a grand piano.

not being a PC Tech

what I do know is you might be having issues there due to the amount of room in them  and the speakers are not that big

best thing I can think of is to get a good set of headphones and use them instead when you need to.

true a decent pair of headphones will let you hear the sounds a lot better, I use sennheiser at home and yes they are a little more expensive but they are brilliant.

oK REPLACED  the hard drive and ran recovery disc one, went well, second disc not so well, kept getting the message, install disc 2, and say ok, did it 50 times, the dvd player would buzz for 30 -40 seconds, and stop , progress on the screen was real close 1st was aat 98% and the second was at 84%. Any suggestions, which probably means discc 2 is not so good.

Good night. Mates.

Success, tried the recovery discs again, and both went through, netbook operational again and faster, thank Phil and Sledge.
