Title: Glock 26, or 27?
Post by: Rob10ring on September 17, 2010, 03:28:15 AM
I'm looking for a carry/pocket gun with a little more oomph. I really like the mini-Glocks, but can't decide on caliber. I also like the LCR, but maybe there are better choices I haven't considered. What do you like?

Been carrying a G27 for 6 years now, and have no complaints. It is way more accurate than it should be and conceals fairly well. I give it top praise, and that's saying a lot from a guy who hated the looks and feel of a Glock. I never met a Glock of any shape that either fit my hand or impressed me with accuracy (and I tried).... until the G27...it just works for me. I can't see me ever buying another Glock, but I like this one.

I ended up with the 27 by default because that's all they had in stock and I needed a smaller gun than a 1911 at the time (for deeper concealment), so I went with it. I would have liked the .45 acp model but they were on back-order. With 10 rounds of Cor-Bon 165gr JHP +P's in the gun and a spare mag, I do not feel lacking in firepower.

All that said, you would be served well by either the 26 or 27. I've never been a fan of 9mm in any shape or form, but there are plenty of top ammo brands that will get the job done in that caliber these days.

I prefer my 1911 Commander, but the extra weight makes a difference sometimes.....and with my bad hips and knees, the lighter G27 is appreciated.

If you want a Glock those little guns are great. My SIL carries a G26 off duty. I have shot it several times and it is as accurate as any pistol I've ever fired without optics. I agree with PegLeg that 9mm ammo will get the job done and the .40 might be a little less accurate due to recoil. On the other hand if you're not worried about that, just go ahead and get the G30 with (I think) 10 rounds of .45acp, or if that's a problem the G36 has less, but it's a single stack and thinner in the grip.

Peg has it nailed with his comments.  I have carried a 27 for about a dozen years, fired thousands of rounds through it, and never had a performance issue except one failure to feed with some Wolf ammo.  Just one.  Recently, I changed my concealed carry to a Rossi .357 snubbie.  It's a little smaller that the 27 and conceals a little better.  I put a couple of boxes of ammo through it earlier this week and managed a respectable cluster in the black at 21', so I believe it will do the job.  I do not plan to trade or sell my Glock, and I will still carry it when the situation demands greater fire power.  IMHO, .40 is a better round than 9mm.  Reduced accuracy due to greater recoil does not appear to be a real issue.  The 27 is one of the most accurate handguns  have fired.  It is ugly.  But you don't buy personal protection because it's pretty.

I'm just sayin'...

I have  a G26 The reasoning was easy.
I'm already feeding a 9mm handguns so why start stocking 40 S&W?

I shot the DTI advance qualifier with a G27 and had no problems with it.

I believe you mean more readily available shots (greater capacity) than more firepower. ;)

I own a G26 and have had zero issues. I changed out the recoil spring assembly to a stainless steel unit and use G19 mag with grip adapters to increase mag capacity. My ammo of choice is Winchester 9mm Ranger SXT 147 Grain loads. My gun isnt picky but that is the ammo I bet my life on.

I voted other, not because I have an opinion on a certain "other" but the XD and M&P sub-compacts are options.  Also the LCP and the various S&W snubs.  I plan to try the G, S&W and SA soon and maybe pick another CCW .  A person could go broke testing all the options at a range that has a big selection, especially since they usually require you to buy factory ammo from them to test out range guns.

JMHOFWIW

Richard

PS:  I presently carry an LCP, S&W 642 and or a Colt LW Officers ACP

Thanks guys! Good stuff. It sounds like I need at least one of each and some I hadn't thought of.

Being in CA, I don't get to consider CCW very often, but my parents moved to UT and I have a permit there. I finally got to break in the permit and found that most of my choices were just a little big for summer in UT, or my CA wardrobe was what wasn't accommodating. That was my first experience carrying CCW legally and I was wondering if anyone else feels uncomfortable walking into a convenience store that has police inside, while carrying. I really felt like a newbie, but avoided doing a pat-check. …and talk about a State that allows you to carry virtually anywhere!

fuzD.  Yes it does feel funny in the beginning.  I wear a fannypack and had read that it shouts "GUN!" but I'm 63 and nobody pays this old fart any attention even walking on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse and near the police station.

Yeah, I can just carry a couple of extra "clips" in my pocket for rapid reloads instead of depending on the speedloader for the .357.

The first time you CCW, even with a small gun, you feel like you are carrying a Gatling gun and every eye is on you. Most "normal" folks wouldn't notice a dead skunk under your arm, for the most part, as they go about their way. Most of the folks that would truly notice (if you could be spotted anyway) are CCW themselves.
It gets better with time.

+1 Peg. I noticed a guy at the Fresh Market in the "Kahr" ballcap, most folks don't even know what that represents, but me, well I was wearing my TAPCO shirt, and we both looked at each other and nodded. 8)

Think thats wierd, wait till you live in an open carry state. Trying that for the first time is a real trip.

The 40 is VERY snappy out of the 27 so the 26 *should* be better for recoil control. If recoil is an issue for you, go with the 26.
If not, carry the 27 with a smile. I do and have for many years.
(Get a mag floorplate extension. My Pearce floorplate made a WORLD of difference)

I have my California CCW and now that the temps are back down into the 80's I can carry my G27 OWB with an untucked shirt over a tee, but during the summer months its my .357 J frame in my front pocket.

even when it was 115 this summer, I had a 1991 on my hip.  I'm a skinny guy, but IWB and a lose shirt works very well.

If your choices are between the GLOCKs I'd choose the 27 because it fires a bigger bullet. But since you want a pocket gun, my choice is a J-frame in .357 Mag. My personal choice is a S&W 649 in .357 Mag. The G26/27 seem a bit too bulky to me for a pocket gun. Some people pull it off great, but for pocket I'd go with a 5 shot .357 revolver. I wouldn't choose a .38 Spl. gun. When ammo shortages come around, .38 Special is one of the 4 calibers that you can't find at all (even harder to find is hollow points in those calibers). In some cases, you can still find .357 mag hollow points. With .357 you can still shoot .38 Spl in it, or you have the option to shoot Magnum rounds in it. If it doesn't have to be a pocket gun, I'd choose the G27. But since you said pocket pistol, I voted Other. I'm told the Ruger LCR is a great gun, but I wouldn't choose a .38 Spl.

UNCOMFORTABLE? No. A LITTLE WEIRD? Yes, for the first week or two.

I'll tell you what's both awkward and uncomfortable.  Try carrying in a location that is borderline on whether or not your allowed to carry it there, and have someone in your group who doesn't know you're carrying and has no real reason to think that you're carrying decide to holler out "I told you not to bring that gun in here" in front of everybody including the 5 or 6 cops standing there.   :o >:(  Follow that up with an interrogation by another person in your group in which you have to pretend to pat yourself down and lie to him about having it.

That happened to me last night.  I would have given anything for a 26 instead of my 19, as it suddenly felt huge.

And, possibly for something to beat him with for doing that to me.  ;D

P.S. A 26 has been on my shopping list for a while; it makes more sense for me because I already have a 19.

Yes.
I had a friend like that. We could be in a restaurant having a meal and general conversation and if the subject of guns or shooting came up he would blurt something to the effect of, "I always feel protected when he (pointing at me) has his pistol. He never goes anywhere without it!!!"
I finally had a polite (and well thought out) talk and told him there's a reason they call it 'concealed carry' and that I keep it out of sight for that reason.
Heck, my brother-in-law has done the same thing to me when I was with him, and he's a cop. Thank goodness in south Georgia, most people could care less.

Amen to the above. I carry a G-26 in the right front pocket of my Dockers. It feels heavy, and I'm convinced it prints when I sit. Hell, I've spent more time bending and twirling in front of a mirror than a bride with her wedding dress. Here's the thing, it prints as "something" not a gun. At first I felt like I was walking into church naked. The bending and twirling showed that the left pocket with wallet and cell, didn't print any differently. You just have to get used to it.
As far as idiots? Well, I'm a big fan of don't ask don't tell. There is zero reason anyone should know whether you are carrying. Sometimes yers, sometimes no. Unless there is a good reason, keep it that way.

PS as to the original post, the G-26 and G-27 are both great guns. Its just  a question of bigger holes + more expensive ammo or smaller holes with cheaper and more easily available rounds. Flip a coin.

Heck, the funny thing in my neck of the woods was, during the "great ammo shortage of '09", I was finding way more .40 than 9mm.........which was way good for me since I don't own a 9mm.

MKM, That is pretty funny and I'd have been a little upset.

FQ, 9mm disappeared here too. There was some .40. The .45, .38, .380 and .357 were all casper too. There was a lot of 12G. It was strange that 9x18 Makarov could be found.
