Title: Great Scene
Post by: PegLeg45 on September 20, 2010, 10:34:23 AM
Pretty good scene from the mini-series John Adams.

I can only imagine what it was really like to be there that day. Shame the administrations of this day and age don't have the presence, humbleness, and regard for duty that founded this nation.

We pledge our lives, our fortunes and our SACRED honor...

Great men from a different time when words were the measure of a man and his bond.

Those are still the qualities and measure of greatness today.  We just don't have as many folks who live by them today, and very many fewer in office who do.

Unfortunately it is only a measure to those of us that live by it.  I fear the masses measure greatness by what they can get from a politician or how many home runs/ touchdowns, etc.

Sad.

And when obscure concepts like honor actually had meaning.  For some of us, they still do...

adding to it~~~ :)

These great men had their priorities in order...God and Country.
My oh my~~~ how we have strayed from these principles. Let us..as Americans.. go back to the foundations that were laid by great patriots. and once again embrace God and country, and the principles that made this nation mighty.......morals..ethics..the love of God.. and the love of America.

This Nation will return to GREATNESS when, and only IF, we return to our roots.

This is a full classic scene from the HBO special 'John Adams':  ( which was absolutely an awesome series...)

The first inauguration of George Washington as the President of the United States took place on April 30, 1789.

If you haven't seen this series.. you should do so~~

Thank you Marshall'ette. What a time it must have been! Every home had a musket, every home was a steadfast American family.. Were there growing pains? Absolutely.

Things like HONOR, FAITH, DUTY, meant something. God I pray we get there again.

But the weight of what our Founders did was not taken lightly. Ben Franklin remarked to a woman who asked, "What have you given us?"

"A Republic, IF you can keep it." he replied.

It seems our young country is at the brink of losing what Washington swore to uphold, and I'll be damned if some socialist, arrogant, self serving politicians will change that endeavor for my children.

Great clip. Should be MANDATORY in schools.

Thanks again.

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
President Thomas Jefferson

I could not agree with you more! Funny thing is George Washington really did not want to be president; he just wanted to be a farmer. He was basically drafted by a unanimous vote, and did so not because it was what he wanted to do but because it was the right thing to do.

It is exactly what we need, people of character getting involved and standing up. Not because they want power, but because it is the right thing to do. A true uphill battle that we all must rise up to even if we really don’t want to, when you look at the small percentage of people who are actually willing to educate themselves and vote, which is around only 30%. We all need to do our part to educate everyone we can and get them to vote! Now is the time for each and every one of us to get involved and step outside of the comfort zone to restore our country!

Most politicians of the day, really wanted to do their duty, and GO HOME, back to their lives, Wish it was the same now. Now it is all about, being treated like kings in DC, and staying  there, I really hate that my congressman are so good, I would to get on the firing bandwagon, but my guys are good. My senators, that is another conversation, but nobody is running against them.

That is where we really need to come into play, find people of good with the right principles to fight them in the primary.  The other solution one that I believe would really be a game changer is to repeal the 17th Amendment.  Our founders did not intend that senators be elected by the people; they were to be appointed by the states to insure that each state had an equal seat at the table. If the senator was not looking out for the best interest of the state they were simply fired and replaced. When you take in to account the power of the senate, and think about what it would be like if Wilson never got the 17th Amendment, I believe we would not have half the problems we do.  But repealing the 17th Amendment in today’s world would be a hard task, but would be the right thing to do.

I am torn on this issue. On the one hand, I agree. I detest populism. I cannot stand ballot initiatives, and the idea of electing judges seems absurd. You might as well let people phone in their votes on a case like in American Idol. That said, the problem is the fact that political parties have become the main arbiters of power. Let the legislatures choose Senators, and you will get subservient party hacks who will define state and national interests as the party leaders in Trenton or Austin or Salt Lake see them. One would hope the majority of voters would provide an incentive to take a broader (eg RINO or Blue Dog) view. The Senate is supposed to be moderate. Its why they have staggered elections so they aren't swept up in the passions of a particular moment. I think that in theory, the 17th was a mistake. In practice, it seems the lesser of two evils.

Never, ever forget, those guys were nothing but politicians and lawyers.
The Constitution is a politically expedient, imperfect, compromise  document that dodged the 2 major issues of the day,
Not one of them was man enough to 6take a stand against slavery or to suggest equal rights for women.

Those who continue to rely on an obviously flawed election system and the whims of the average voter will get what they deserve.
Probably 8 years of BO

Well, they had to start somewhere....and it was a tad better than what they had before 1776....IMHO.   :-\

Kind of like a teenage boy's first experience with alcohol and women......can't expect top quality the first time out.   ;D

It has morphed into an abomination of what it was originally intended to be, though....also JMHO.
