Title: Saiga 308 mods/range report
Post by: CJS3 on September 27, 2010, 10:49:45 PM
Picked a Saiga 308 a couple of months back, and finally finished all the mods today. First step was the addition of tapco stock and after market (Surefire) mags. I finished the FC group today, moving the trigger forward and adding an ergonomic pistol grip. Now I need to get some range time.

Which is the final build, and why did you choose that configuration? I have been tempted by Saigas for a while and would love to hear more, partcularly a range report.

The last picture is the final build. I was going to just change out the stock and forearm, but I kept seeing pictures of the trigger just behind the magazine, and really liked that configuration a lot better. So I bought the FCG and made the changes. A lot easier than I thought. The trigger feels a lot better than the factory configuration, but I need to get some range time on it.

Can that same thing be done to 12 gage shotgun? I've benn wanting one but unwilling to spend the extra $300-400 for the hand grip version.

With factory ammo, the 16" barreled Saiga 308 Winchester has a massive muzzle blast, with a lot of noise when fired. Something that can be deeply satisfying, depending on your mood. The range safety officers all stopped by to see what I was shooting. Since I've only used open sights so far, target groups were only so-so. At 50 and 100 yards, all rounds where on the paper. I did have to adjust the front sight down and to the left, but no other targeting problems have occured. Recoil is not at all unmanageble with the Tapco stock and butt pad. I may eventually change to some other stock. The tapco stock rattles. If I was shooting wild pig, or some other adversary, the first shot at 50 would have taken them down. At 100, maybe 2 or 3 shots, my eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

That rifle is crying for some type of "optic".

With the rear sight so far forward the sight radius is small and accuracy will suffer.
