Title: S.P.E.A.R. Training
Post by: usmcdadx2 on October 04, 2010, 12:36:00 PM
I have a staff member asking if we could add this training/certification. Anyone here have any first hand knowledge of this sytem? I've heard of it but have no experience with it. Nor do I know anyone who has undergone this training. I've looked at their website but frankly I've seen some slick websites touting products/training that do not remotely deliver the goods. Any input would be welcome.

Well since I don't have enough staff to field a phalanx, I guess I'll have to opt for the more individual style of the Zulu. Any decent sized spear will be a bit problematic in the corridors however.

This training in an unarmed CQ self-defence/combate training system. My understanding is that it touts redirecting/channeling the startle/flinch reflex into effective responses. The founder or chief proponent is a guy named Tony Blauer.

The Pincus featured it (and Blauer) on an episode of SWAT Magazine TV, I believe, last season. He comes highly recommended. Maybe Rob will chime in here to expand on this.

SPEAR is the Mil/LE Program and Personal Defense Readiness is the the civilian self-defense version.

It is THE basis for a good unarmed defense program... Tony Blauer's research and these programs inspired a lot of research and articulation in the CFS Program that I teach for counter ambush shooting. While it is a not a complete "system", it is a great foundation.. the best, I think.

Rob,

Thanks for the input. I found a couple of local LEO's who have been trough the courses. Sounds like a very interesting program which offers some really good skills for when things go south. I'm just not sure how easy of a "sell" it will be to the administration here as far as it being a program they will pay staff to attend.
