I have been hearing that all over the country. It seems as though Walmart is slowly pulling out of the gun business. I like the prices that Walmart offered and the abundance of inventory to order from, but I have always supported my local hometown gun store with my firearm purchases. Ammunition prices are hard to beat at Walmart, I can get 100 rds of Winchester "White Box" 230 Gr.45 ACP Round Ball for $20. Walmart will one day run these mom and pop stores and smaller chains out of business and have a Monopoly, then we will be forced to pay what they want us to pay for things and we will have no say otherwise. You have to wonder...when you can walk into a store and buy a pair of underwear on one side, potato chips in the middle and get your car serviced on the other side, you have to ask yourself when is the takeover going to happen, and do I have a full clip??? ;D

They still have the guns in my local Wally-World (Campbellsville, KY) but they recently revamped the store and got rid of a  lot of the cheaper stuff they used to sell.  Looks to me they are headed down the same road K-Mart traveled.  Hopefully, someone else will come along to put them on the defensive.  They have not been the same store since Sam died.

You know, I was in my local Wally World (Virginia Beach, VA) the other night and I too noticed that there were no rifles in the racks. I did not think much of it at the time, I just assumed that they may have been sold out or restocking since it is tax season. I would hate to think that they have given up the goat around here, we still have a large contingency of hunters that are close to than Wally World. I guess that they too have given in to the anti's, liberals and are getting ready for the demon-ratz to take over.

I am like most though, I buy my firearms elsewhere but do spend my fair share of money in there on ammo and cleaning supplies.

Speaking of Walmart... when I moved out to the country the local Walmart was one of those small stores, run down, but lots of guns! They built a Super Walmart across the street, everyone was thrilled, and they removed the guns!

The Walmart near where I work still sells guns (small selection) and they can order from manufacturer's catalogs. So I ask for a Marlin lever in .357. Sorry, not in the catalog.

Months later I stumble across this... http://downloads.walmart.com/guns

You just make note of the item number, go into your local Walmart and place a order. Should get that Marlin any week now.

Do ya'll remember TG&Y?  I'm old enough to remember...they had guns, then during the insanity of the 60's pulled them from the shelves.  Now, I'm not saying in today's urban society that Wally World is going by the wayside...but I do remember the thing that drew most of the old men (I was 10 or so then) was the guns.  After they pulled the guns you may as well just have sold knitting needles, yarn and cloth....the guys began going to Otasco (an upstart where I grew up) for their needs and the women folk did the TG&Y thing.  So, when the guys were required by their wives to buy clothes....like blue jeans or whatever....there was not just need to go to TG&Y any more, we were offended and went somewhere else.  The good old days.

Just thinking.....gets me in trouble some times.

The Walmarts here have removed the firearms from the "slow selling stores".  Out of the half dozen or so locations here -- only two continue to stock and sell firearms -- the two that are located the furthest from the population center (i.e. the stores out in "the country").  I'm told that all the stores will continue to offer ammunition.  Time will tell.

I can rmember a time when some Walmarts carried handguns in the '80s when I lived in Tennessee.  Although I do not remember seeing guns in the TG&Y (guess at that age I was more interested in the toys and candy isle), I do remember firearms at Sears, Montgomery Ward, and Jm Fields.

Most of my firearm purchases now are made via the internet (auction sites, firearm boards and distributor websites).  My local shop, of course, get the transfer business...

As much as we'd like to think this is some big corporate plot, I think it is much simpler than that. Walmart worships the all mighty dollar and if a product isn't bringing in enough revenue they're going to get rid of it.

This goes back to the fact that people don't shoot like they use to and we need to bring in more new shooters. Those of use who do shoot probably use more ammo than most did in the past but how many guns can you really buy from a place like Walmart over the course of a year?

I have to agree when it comes to Wal-Mart and the search for the all mighty dollar.  If you think about it is a double edged sword, most of us won't buy our large purchases (firearms) from Wal-Mart because we want to support our local gun shop, but at the same time will visiting wallyworld for cleaning supplies, ammunition, targets and a lot of those small dollar items that for us gun nuts really are part of our grocery list when visiting wallyworld.  As for that, the guns will continue to move out walla walla land and prices will keep going up at the local stores.  But, what is the alternative, letting Wal-Mart control the availability of firearms.

Although this may be good alternative, in the case when people really need them you can be sure Wal-Mart would have a 24 hour sell-a-thon in order to make their investors fat, rich and happy.

I can just imagine that footnote on their 10K now.  Our spike in sales during the month of X was caused by the Democrats taking office and threatening to restrict future purchases of firearms, as such we could not keep enough product on our shelves thus resulting in our acquisition of Winchester, Kimber, and a few other well known firearms manufacturers in order to better control distribution channels.  We further have worked out a deal, with the party in office, where a similar scare will be advertised mid-June every year, conveniently our slowest month.  We expect to see a 15% gain in our firearms sales over the next 12 months....

What to do, What to do? ??? ???

Service Merchandise.......  Still have it....  nothing like the sound of a 12 ga. pump action to terrify an intruder in the middle of the night... kachunk, kachunk.....  Anybody remember buying weapons at Service Merchandise?

Yep,  I got my Marlin Camp 9 Carbine there -- while living in Chattanooga.  I still have the rifle, though I can't remember the last time it was fired...  Probably not in 15 years or so...
