Title: Rifled choke tubes for shotguns?
Post by: tommy tornado on November 06, 2010, 05:37:25 PM
Anybody have any experience with rifled choke tubes for shotguns?  I was curious if they are worth the expense before I order one from Briley's.  Do they add any advantage over a smoothbore?  I assume that shooting one would be like shooting a snubby revolver (not the actual recoil etc but in terms of adding spin to a slug).  Just wanted to know your thoughts.

I personally wouldn't buy one.

I haven't had any friends that shot any better with a rifled choke than a good rifled slug.  Also, I have heard one account of a 3" slug tearing a rifled choke out of a gun.  Don't know if it is true, but that was the story ... and we weren't drinking yet.

Biggest thing to think of is what you asked already - Is two inches enough length to spin and stabilize a slug?

From what I read they work a lot better than a smoothbore with sabot slugs. I don't have any actual experience with them.

What kind of gun do you have? If its something like a Mossberg/Maverick or 870 you can often find used rifled barrels for $50-$75 dollars and I guarantee they'll wourk a whole better.

870 and a single shot Rossi.  New rifled 870 barrels are expensive.  Been looking but haven't found a used one yet.

Depends entirely on what you want to shoot at.  I had all of these same questions myself until I discovered the dDupleks "Duplo" and "Monolit" line of ammo.  CTD has them, as I am sure others do...
