RECIEVED THIS MORNING.
A St. Louis, Missouri guy on my AR-15 forum had a bad accident with his S&W 460XVR Magnum yesterday. He was shooting with a two handed hold and got his left thumb up near the lower front of the cylinder. The normal (powerful) gasses blowing out at the barrel/cylinder gap ripped the top of his left thumb off. I've added some of his posts & some pics.

We do a demonstration with disposable (standard weight, not heavy duty) pie plates for our firearm safety classes. We take the kids to the pistol bay and hold the pie plate next to the side of a revolver with the flat bottom almost touching the cylinder. We use a Ruger singe six .22lr, American Western with .38 special and .357 mag, a Berretta .45lc in single action, a S&W 625 in .45acp, and S&W 500 PC.
The the most damage is actually done with the .357 and the .45 lc. The 500 was next with the 625 coming in close behind. I got the idea for this after burning a finger with the single six shooting .22 mag. I was curious as to what could happen if I could get 2nd degree burns from a .22. This is a demonstration that does get the kids attention!
These pictures show what I was lucky enough to learn and pass on with only a few days discomfort. However, I hope I pointed out that your not OK just because you don't own a .460. Also, I never had a problem with this until I started really shooting a lot of USPSA with my 1911 and 2011. Now I have to remember where my finger goes when I pick up the revolvers.
I'd post pictures, but I don't keep the plates after the demonstration, and at five below last I checked I'm not real excited about going outside right now (wifey is ok with my guns and shooting :D, but nothing but air in the house :'()

I shot a 22 LR SA while holding it upsde down once. got a slight powderburn on the palm of my left hand. Thankfully, I learned that lesson with that little black streak on my hand. THankfully it wasn't a 357 or something bigger. That quick little burn lets me remember to watch my hands when shooting my revolvers.

I saw a guy shoot an old Colt .32 with his finger over the topstrap. The bad part was that the Colt did not index right any more. After we cut up his hand trying to dig out the bullet shavings, he ended up in ER. He said it hurt like a b$#%h, but I didn't feel a thing.
