Title: Buzzards!
Post by: fightingquaker13 on November 13, 2010, 03:01:17 PM
They say we don't get seasons here in South Florida. They lie. Every year, in the early weeks of November, thousands of Turkey Vultures migrate down south. Its like the swallows of Capistrano, only a bit less poetic. Today I nealy died. I went to the local Publix to buy some bacon and beer (insert your own joke here), but I'm making corn bread and beer battered catfish and both are necesary ingredients, at least thats my story and I'm sticking to it. ;D  Anyway, on the way, I pass this nursing home. There must have been fifty of the bastards perched on the roof. I almost swerved off the road I was laughing so hard. Does that make me a bad person?  :o
FQ13 who thinks that management should make shooing them off a priority. If that isn't bad for business (and morale) I don't know what is. ;D

Having a Hitchcock moment, but it does seem ominous.. Too bad it's so hard to find fatback's for frying but good fatty bacon, like many a non-muslim chef say: you can't go wrong with pork fat in a recipe...

The birds clear up road kill, take care of carcass's, they have packs of them around west broward cow country this time of year. ::)

They are like welfare recipients, opportunists if you will. I guess the nursing home just "smelled appropriate". ;D

Damn FQ, you guys must feel somewhat like ol' Pharaoh did back in the day....just with a modern twist.
You got gators, hogs, hurricanes, old people, pythons, Cubans, Guatemalans, Haitians, iguanas, and now buzzards....... throw in some frogs raining down from the sky and y'all can get ready for the end times.

One locust swarm, JUST ONE, and I beat feet North.... :o

They probably fly in from Hinkley, Ohio up near Cleveland.  Hinkley has a celebration when they return each Spring.  Pretty big deal for a very little burg.

Here's something I've noticed,
Any place I've been that has a Dining facility,Chow hall's in the Marine's, College Dining facilities, etc, always a big flock of sea gulls around.
Except when thy serve chicken, then there's not one to be seen, but they are back for the next meal time.
Where I work now I can see the County Jail, (about 100 yards away ) same thing, I don't know the specific menu, but most days there's a flock, then there will be a day when there are none.
I think they know.

Beats the nursing home in the small town near my ranch where the best view was of - you guessed it - the cemetary!   >:(

I remember hitting the Albertson's in Hudson near where my Dad used to live and see the 8 or 10 benches out front packed with old buzzards - the wingless variety - apparently parked there waiting for the flying kind. Sad, kind of.

Here in N. Ga, we get Canada Geese who don't migrate.     The disadvantage is that unlike buzzards, they don't particularly help with the ecology thing.   They just tie up traffic, squawk and poop a lot.

Now, in my book, if a migratory bird fails to migrate, it forfeits all protection under federal migratory game laws and becomes......a varmint!

The advantage over buzzards is they taste very good with beer.

or so I've been told.

Stupid buzzards come here in the summer.  Well, if you go a few miles inland you see them thick as flea's on a dogs butt!  Closer to the beach you get the less you see them.  With FL and SC climates being almost the same you'd think they'd go further north for the hot months!

Silly Badger! You fail to understand that Turkey Vultures are poetic souls who love irony. The Palm Beach County Jail is a ten story edifice. It Overlooks Donald Trump's Mar-a-Largo Golf club (don't even ask how much it costs to join ::)). The whole Shangrila is done up in a black wrought iron and gold plated fence that would embarrass a French whore house. The funny thing? Not only do the prisoners overlook the course (and offer their commentary from the windows), but the buzzards roost on building. Its classic Florida. The socially ambitious  noveau riche playing golf at a tacky and over priced course owned by a con artist, with the world's worst rug and his own "reality" show, and being heckeld by convicts and observed by vultures! Carl Hiasson couldn't make that up! Welcome to Palm Beach County, where no one has cable because the entertainment is free. ;D :-[ ::)

Sounds like you missed a great "Kodak Moment" with the buzzards, FQ.

Might be a market for that photo.  Some type of Demotivational  Poster or something.
