I get to pick up my newest toy tonight, a Ruger Blackhawk .45 convertible. I’m going to change the hammer to the Super Blackhawk version very soon and maybe polish the contact surfaces and drop in Wolff springs. I'm sure the gun will shoot just fine without that but what's the fun of owning if you can't tweak things a bit. I have heard there is a way to do a free spin mod that does not involve modifying or replacing the pawl... all I have been able to find are methods that do require pawl changes. Does anyone here know if that is really possible or how it can be done?

Thanks Breezzer99, didn't see what I needed right off the bat but I'm sure if I did a little more reading it's in there somewhere.
Now to quote a true cultural icon..."D'OH"; I totally forgot about our RATS friends over on the CAS City side of the street when I asked my question here. I popped over there to ask the same question and discovered they already have an active topic that covers the whole thing.
Porn to follow, not sure when I'll get to the range for a while, deer season starts Saturday after all, but I think I'll take it along for a little informal stump shooting at camp.

Congrats on the "new toy".... and good luck on your deer hunt!!!
Porn with your new toy at deer camp will work.. ;D

they are nice guns

Frankly, I think stump shooting beats a range report. Just be sure everyone has their deer first, or you will will be posting an SD report. ;D I had one in .357 and liked it. I just didn't need it. One in .45 Colt? That's the real deal. Add a Rossi carbine and you're golden. I look forward to further reports.

FQ, Need it??? When does need ever enter the picture?
CJS3... can't post what you don't got. Couldn't pick it up until last night. Also picked up 100 rounds of 10X 45 colt to go with it (ouch), good thing my next project is to take up reloading. Here are a couple of pictures.

I picked up a Ruger .45 ACP / .45 Colt Blackhawk Convertible about 14 years ago. They are really nice guns. I would like to eventually get a 9 MM / .357 Blackhawk Convertible to go along with it, but they are hard to come by. Bill T.

Nice! Ya got the 'right' barrel length. For me the 4 5/8 looks and feels more balanced.
-
BillT- I know a guy with the 357/9 and the 357 cylinder is great but when he switches to 9mm his accuracy goes in the toilet. That and the fact that I really "needed" a 45 Colt in the collection is what decided me(the 45 acp cylinder was a plus too). Too bad you are down in AZ the Scheel's I got mine from had 2 of the 357/9's(each current barrel length) in the showcase when I placed my order.
Haz- I like the 4 5/8 models but the 5.5 just felt right when I was fondling them in the store. I'm sure the sales staff was greatful I finally ordered something. I made lots of trips to the store to play with the various blackhawks and vaqueros before I picked the one I wanted.

Nice lookin' hardware....built like a tank, it will out last you. ;D ;D
-
I Like Wolff Springs, I usually swap factory springs out and slip them in. Never an issue.
Kinda like choosing tires for a car, Pep Boy's sells good tires, but sometimes,,,,.. sometimes,....Some Eagle GT's, or Pirelli's make a big difference.
Balance, reduced felt recoil, and accuracy. Sounds like the right combination for you.
Congrats!

It's beautiful. and I'm jealous! ;D

Sweet. By far the BEST, 45 colt (the 45ACP is nice too) on the market.

Do you mean Ruger is better than other brands because it is built rugged, or do you mean that the BlackHawk is better even than the Vaquero, if so, why ?
-
Ruger.
New model Vaquero is not as rugged as the old model, but is still better than the competition. I like the old model Vaquero because of the larger Super Blackhawk frame that was used.

Thanks JC

No pictures but boy does this gun shoot nice. Was able to find time around deer hunting (didn't see nothing but a few small does in a bucks only zone, figures) to do a little informal blasting. Using targets of opportunity, plastic gallon jugs and soda/beer cans, I was able to get an idea of how good the blackhawk is with 45 Colt 10 X Cowboy loads and Federal FMJRN 45ACP. Both shot great and were very accurate. My very first shot was with the Colt loads and I drilled a gallon jug dead on POA from about 15 yards away. Between the 2 types of ammo I only had 100 rounds with me and boy did they disappear fast. Without a formal target or measured ranges I couldn't do any real accuracy testing but I filled one of the jugs about half way with sand and got off 3 rounds for effect before being a little low with the fourth and blowing the hell out of the jug. At about 15 yards with ACP those 3 shots were all inside the circular "dimple" on the side of a gallon milk jug, I've never measured one of those but it looks to me to be about 2 to 2 1/2 inches in size.
Now I've just got to get the super blackhawk hammer and wolff springs and put them in. I've also got a block of unidentified hardwood in the basement that is just calling to me to try to make some nicer grips than the black ones that came stock.
-
Sounds like ya got a winner! Did ya try the 'poor mans trigger job"?
-
Haz...nope, just a personal quirk but I'm not real fond of having one leg of the spring hanging unsecured. I know it is just fine and doesn't cause any problem but I just don't like it. I've seen posts on how to achive the same results with a little judicious bending of the spring but rather than do that I'll just throw in the Wolff's. Truth be told, after having a chance to shoot it, if I hadn't already ordered the Wolff set I may have chosen to just leave the springs stock.
-
All mine are 'done', but as you say it is a personal preference kinda thing.
-
Yep.. All of our personal quirks is what makes this place so interesting. Although sometimes I'm not sure "quirks" is quite a strong enough descriptor.

I normally use a timmy but there are some good drop ins

.355 bullets going down a .357 tube.
Mr. 45 - what in the hell are you talking about?
Do you have some unfilled need the moderators can help with?
-
Mitch, I already reported his posts

Still super pleased with the 45Colt/45ACP Blackhawk convertible, very accurate and fun to shoot...so I went to Scheel's yesterday to get some pimers and just "happened" to walk by the used guns. Durn me if the super clean 5 1/2 inch barrel 22LR/22Mag convertible that I've been thinking about as a companion piece wasn't just marked down from $399 to $299. I don't know about you guys but around here the only used ones I've seen at that price are pretty beat up.
That being the case and since it was my birthday... Happy Birthday to me! I'll post a picture once the waiting period is up and I can go get it.

haha my b day coming up cant wait to see what I can buy thinking a galil
