Title: Spyderco Delica Critical Failure! Warning!
Post by: fightingquaker13 on November 19, 2010, 12:21:11 AM
I own and love a Spyderco Delica. Its half flat ground, half serrated. I bought it used this summer. It worked great. I loved it. Today however, it scared the crap out of me. I was going to open the packaging on a new pair of kitchen shears. They were held in the box by VERY tight plastic ties. I opened my knife. I was going to work it under and pry, then cut them out.

Thank God and his angels I was paying attention. The one handed opening FELT right, it just didn't SOUND right. For once, I listened to that little voice that said "STOP AND PAY ATTENTION, DAMNIT"! I did. The blade didn't lock. If I had tried to to pry stubborn plastic ties off with it, I'd have to change my name from FQ13 to Flipper13 or "The Six Fingered Quaker". :o Seriously, I came "that close" to losing fingers as the thing is scary sharp, its a stout blade, and I would be putting a lot of force into prying/cutting stubborn plastic. Bad news in anyone's book. Thing is, it worked fine yesterday when I cut down a box. Not a hint of a problem. Today, it just won't lock. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem with Spyderco, or could offer an opinion on what went wrong. I'll send it back to the factory and have zero doubt that they will fix or replace it.

Still, its one of those moments that wakes you up. One minute you're opening a box, the next, you're minus four fingers due to equipment failure. It it wasn't for the fact that I didn't hear the click and stopped what I was doing, I'd have been posting this from the ER. Scary stuff. SD doesn't just happen on the street. Sometimes its in your own kitchen, and learning to listen to that little voice makes all the difference.

Check for pocket crud in the hinge ?
I'm not familiar with SpyderCo locks , whether their lock backs like Buck, or liner lock, or what so I can't offer any more .
I have the scar 30 years after having a Puma lock back fail on me.

Pocket lint can do that to either type lock!  Ask me how I know.

FWIW

Hell, I do it with five now, or haven't you noticed the typos?  ;D
Seriously, it was a bit of a shock when something you take for granted fails. Its like a Glock not feeding or a Ruger going out of time. It happens, just not very often. When it does? Not a good thing.

I've had lint in the lock notch, and I've had lesser knives break the locking nub off the lock itself. I've also had one knife that had the lack notch sear thingy on the back of the blade worn down so much the blade wouldn't lock.

I'm through paying top dollar for carry knives. Now I buy several of the "Smith & Wesson", or "Winchester" Chinese models from Big 5 Sporting Goods when they have them on sale, which is most anytime. I can get a nice knife for $7 bucks or less. When guys at work ask what I paid they don't believe me. 2 days later they all have them. I've never had one break on me yet, and most will hold an edge just fine. If there ever is a problem I simply toss it and open up another one. The one's that Mel and I now carry have a glass breaker and a seat belt cutter built into it. I bought 6 of them. I put one in each vehicle, we each carry one, and each have a spare. $42.00+ tax total out the door.  Bill T.

Glad you're okay FQ!   I think it's part of  situational awareness and it worked for you.

Spyderco is a good brand, but any brand/model will fail at some point.

Hey EVERYONE!   Keep your eyes and ears open.  Stay alert!   It's those subtle, little clues that will save your life (or, er, fingers).

Bud K has some good stuff, as does Frost Cutlery. Although they need to get rid of the 3:00 AM Infomercial guy. He's a real Bubba who looks like a stalker for the girl guests who leave the Jerry Springer Studio.

"We may need emergency surgery in the studio!"

I've got a ton of Frost knives that hold an edge better than many of my higher priced knives. As always, it's important to have a good set of "throwers" so the woman can keep them busy while you're reloading!   ;D  Bill T.

Highest quality ever made, cheapest Chinese knock off on the market, custom made, or off the rack, the most important thing is inspect, clean and maintain!

We have talked and typed for years about lint in guns and magazines - why wouldn't a carry knife be any different?  I use my knife daily, and look at it at least once a day.  Weakly I clean it of lint, dirt and other pocket crud.  I will even run it through the parts washer or spray with brake cleaner and then re-oil.

Your knife is nothing more than a self defense that doesn't go bang, so why shouldn't we treat it the same as the one that goes bang?

You posted just as fast as I thought it.  Totally agree on this one.  ;D

Agreed and I don't know why. Generally after use on stcky stuff (like tape, fish, etc.) it gets rinsed and wiped in VERY hot water. After drying, it gets a spray of Rem Oil and a wipe. There was no lint, that was my first thought, and I gave it a shot with compressed air keyboard cleaner. No dice. It just won't engage. We'll see what the factory says. I agree 100% though. The knife is as much an SD tool as the gun. Same for the light, and for that matter the cell phone. Make sure they all work all the time.
