Title: NRA Convention in PA and CCW
Post by: ellis4538 on November 20, 2010, 04:40:50 PM
Don't know if anyone is planning to attend the NRA convention in Pittsburg, PA. next year but I thought I'd post this FWIW.  For those who live in states that don't have reciprocity with PA it is easy and painless and inexpensive to get an out of state CCW license on line.  Go to Centre County, PA and work your way into the site with the app. and go from there.  No photo necessary.  Sorry, I don't have a link...maybe someone can post it.  "Reason To Carry" is , naturally, Self-Defense.

Hope this helps and hope to be there myself to meet some of you.

Richard Ellis4538

PS:  Don't forget to check out the rules and regs while there.

I'm not meaning to pry open a can-o-worms with this comment, and I hope it doesn't happen but I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't go wrong on here -

What are the carry rules going to be at the convention center or arena where the convention will be held?

I'm hoping that NRA will have learned from past experience to put a heavier emphasis on this when they negotiate, but ...

Don't feel bad. that is good to know.  Maybe someone that has been to the NRA Convention lately can chime in.

What can and can not happen at the convention center is going to depend on 3 groups:

1 State/local law
2 the convention centers rules.
3 the insurance carrier for the event.

If any of those 3 say you can't, then you can't.

Went to Charlotte, for the NRA Convention in May of this year. NC is a very "pro-gun" state, even open carry. (I lived in NC for 20 years,) HOWEVER, the Convention Center is owned by the City Of Charlotte, hence Gov't property, ergo, NO Carry. They did not have signs posted, and I carried my Kershaw knife with pocket "clip", as I do everyday. Very little Police presence. No issues.

However, there was NO metal detectors, wanding, TSA "pat downs", etc,.... Somehow, I have a "gut" feeling "some" were carrying concealed.

PA, may be different, but TAB has covered the spectrum. The guns at the convention, unlike most gun shows, are not tie-wrapped, or tethered. You always love the sound at a booth when everyone is racking the slide, working the action, or cocking the hammers.

Yet, I could have walked in with a pocket full of M+P mags, grabbed one off the display, and made a mess of things. Judging by the crowd, this would have only been for a few seconds, before one would have been shot/ bum rushed, and disarmed, probably fatally. The NRA makes an attempt to NOT seem restrictive, but have to abide by local and state laws.

Now for the Freedom Rally, Glenn Beck, Ollie North, Sarah Palin, Chuck Norris, there was more security. But for the Ted Nugent Luncheon, Ted brought his guitar, and two AR's on stage, with mags, and replied:

"I don't believe in "gun free" zones,..... ;D

I'm sure some PA residents here can provide the local info. That's just my two cents from the Charlotte Event.

I was also at the Charlotte convention and although guns were everywhere I noticed firing pins were removed. Some may not have been altered but I don't remember seeing intact firearms.

#1 - They look at before they choose the city and state;
#2 & 3 - They negotiate as a part of the contract to hold there.

If the NRA learned from the past they will have negotiated that carry is allowed!

That is standard for all trade shows regardless of locale.

Every once in a while I forget about why you belong where you are, and then you post something like this  ???

Should they pull the engines out of cars at industry shows, should they remove the blades of knives at restaurant conventions, should they remove the death and resurrection of Jesus from the Bible at book conventions?  These are all items that have been deemed dangerous by either scientific research or emotions of different groups.

If things are as bad in this country as you suggest, why don't we require the use of "blue" guns at conventions.  They will give you the same grip and weight feel as a real one, and then we don't have to worry about someone that has figured out that you can buy firing pins and magazines through regular markets.

There is a big diffrence between a car, knife and a gun.

Take the keys out of a car and the chances of it hurting anyone go way down.

A kife is a contact weapon, you can't say kill some one from across the convention floor with it.

lets just play the what if game.  lets just say I'm nuts,  I go to this convention where I can freely pick up a gun, there is no zip tie, no teather, no modifcation to the gun in anyway.  If I were to grab a semi auto rifle, say a ar or ak, and I have a loaded mag on my person.  What do you think the chances of some one stoping me from loading the gun, and firing all 30 shots into the crowd?

And before you say this type of thing does not happen.  It damn well has happen.  Not the NRA convention mind you, but other places.

I know I've told all of you about the hardware store that use to sell guns when I was a kid by my house.  How a guy stole a bullet, asked to see a 44 and blew his brains out.  now granted  he didn't go shooting into a crowd, but he could just have easliy turned it on the shop owner and killed him.

I hate to say it, but this time TAB actually has a point, How many stories have we heard of some one going to a range, renting a gun and killing themselves, some of YOU shoot at the range where the mother killed her kid and herself last summer.
Personally, I'll take my chances, but he is presenting a valid argument.

Why wouldn't a nut job just carry the gun in rather than trying to match mags and/or ammo?

Oh wait a minute, that is exactly what most whack jobs do!

If they were going to do the sensible thing they would not be whack jobs, and they would not be bent on killing themselves or a bunch of absolute strangers.

Its all about state of mind.

Like it or not there are some very sick people in this world.

Last time I checked, its pretty hard to sneak a long gun into some where, but its very easy to sneak in a mag or ammo.

Some one could do like what happen in that hardware store.  Only they would bringhte ammo in.

even if they had metal dectors.  no one would think twice about a guy with a bullet key chain.

Again TAB has a valid point no one WOULD think twice about a guy with a bullet key chain, especially since the chain part REPLACES THE PRIMER

Some of the long guns had firing pins removed, as well as, some pistols where removal is easily facilitated. Some Remington, S&W, especially revolvers, Glocks, (I field stripped a G21 for my son), was completely intact.

Looking back, I could have easily walked into Charlotte with two or three high cap handguns under my shirt and jeans. Char-Meck LEO's were around, but would have been reactionary to someone deciding to let loose.

Instead we had to side step some 3 or 4 protesters laying on the sidewalk from the Brady Bunch. They were representing "all" the meaningless deaths from firearms....I think I still saw a guy in a #3 Earnhardt shirt throw his gum at them... ::)

Don't sweat it. It'll give 'em a "war story". How they were attacked and assaulted by gun toting thugs and survived. Hell, if he buys the weed and finds a dumb enough girl (not hard amongst Brady protestors) he might even get laid over the incident. Hell, he owes you one. ;D

I too saw the protesters and it was a non-event and a little sad, they probably all rode together. One 20something tall skinny blonde leader with 5 or 6 overweight young black followers.  Someone came up to me and complained about the little gathering and I told him it was their right to free speech and they could act stupid as they wanted. By the way I have pictures, I even considered asking if I could be in a picture with them.

As a licensed funeral professional and an instructor of all things OSHA and Bloodborne Pathogen, I would have found it necessary to place them in body bags  ;D

We are now marketing a really cool one that does not zip shut - it hermetically seals.  Air tight, strong enough that we make pillows out of them and I put my fat 300# on them without busting them, and very discrete for use in public.  Nice way to conceal Brady members rotting on the sidewalk  ;D

I never said which johnny...    ;)  Yes it is bleneded,   The good single malts are for sipping not partying.

I don't drink takillya anymore.  I learned not to trust that stuff years ago.

Jack is just a staple, not the best, and I like.  my fav is diping fig newtons in it.   Long story, don't ask.

Now if we could find some cyclone...  its a takillya spiked rum with citrus.  its deadly.  Then again I have several great recipes for diffrent LPR( liquid pantie remover) and jello shots, but I think the group might be a little too old for that type of thing.

ok funny wild turkey story.  when I was working for a industrial painter, we had to paint these cilos out in the middle of no where.

There are about 15 of us in this little tiny red neck bar in walks this wild turkey rep.   He is talking to the owner... one of the locals walks up and makes a bet that he can make a turkey call out of a condom.  THe rep expects the bet.  the guy does it, sounds just like a turkey.  Man the wild turkey flowed that place that night...

I've not had wild turkey since and I don't want too.

My "history" needs to stay just that... History! I don't need to create more history.. haha

I don't know...from what I understand of the educational systems these days, history morphs....so you never know how the story is gonna be told.

Thread drift, but we're so good at it,....IMHO, the only good Bourbon, comes from Kentucky, and has a cork....The rest is just whiskey.

Woodford Reserve,...comes to mind,...on the rocks...Sippin' not shots, as it was intended.

plus it makes great Bourbon Balls, and Egg Nog,...(for the Holidays),..... ::)

Yes.  Now let me see, you people want Jack, Johnny, Jose, Bud, some microbrews, bourban, vodka, rum, tequilla, Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray, Guiness, Anchor Steam, cyclone, JW Blue, McCallan, Glenfiddich, hazaritas, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Woodford Reserve, and some olives.  Does that about sum it up?

So...who is planning on going to the convention?  I just made hotel reservations downtown for the wife and myself.  We wanted to have a party for DRTV friends, but we live too far away to expect any of you to come.  I lucked out and found a room for us on Saturday night, so if anyone wants to meet at a bar or restaurant Saturday after the show that would be outstanding.

As an fyi, I don't really know any places that are good in downtown Pgh.  Yes, I live 30 miles away, but I spend more time in NYC than Pittsburgh.  I do, however, have friends that can recommend some places.   ;D

Thanks to Big Sis and the TSA I have no reasonable way to get there and back in a timely manner. It will be the first one I missed in four years, my next one will be Houston.

We were able to get a room at the Cambria Suites by the Consol Energy Center.  It just opened and was the only downtown hotel that showed any availability.  I just Google-mapped it and it's a .7 mile walk from the convention center.

Remember, there are plenty of hotel/motel around the Youngstown area which isn't more than about an 1-1/2 hour drive.

Check with the AAA travel guide and you should find accommodations all along route 80...even the Cleveland area is only about 100 miles away..  If I go, I'll being staying with friends in Lorain, west of Cleveland.

There are plenty of hotels available outside the city, the ones downtown are pretty much booked.
