TOUGH girl Hollywood actress Michelle Rodriguez is adding some star power to the anti-whaling movement.
Rodriguez, a star of the blockbuster film Avatar and hit TV series Lost, is throwing her weight behind the Sea Shepherd's seventh Antarctic whale defence campaign.
She arrived in Hobart onboard the Sea Shepherd vessel Steve Irwin.
However work commitments in the US have forced her to withdraw from the three-month trip.
"I really am so disappointed, but I am planning on coming back for next year's campaign, definitely," Rodriguez said.
She has been a follower of the Sea Shepherd's cause since 2007 and said she is greatly concerned about the plight of endangered whales and other marine life.
"God knows what the future holds," Rodriguez said.
"My generation is the one that is going to make things happen.
"I thought 'How can I be a responsible citizen to this planet?' The Sea Shepherd is the perfect way to make a difference."
Early next month, Captain Paul Watson and 90 crew members will embark on three ships, Steve Irwin, Bob Barker and a new fast interceptor vessel The Ocean Adventurer.
Rodriguez will spend the next six days in Hobart and the surrounding areas.
"I can't wait to go out and see the old growth forests," she said.
Just proves that hollywood types have no sense. She should have stuck to snorting coke least then she was just a hollywood tragic, now she is a hollwood fool as well.

The "Bob Barker"? Really? At least Irwin was pretty hard core. I can see going out to fight on the "Steve Irwin", but the "Bob Barker"? When they line up the gangplank the crew will be invited to "Come on down". I suppose the ones that can name the price of a can of corn without going over might get a pardon. ;D

I use to like the chilie peppers, then I saw where they gave these guys a 100k... that was it. When thier stuff comes on the radio, I change the station.
-
All the Sea Shepherds are a bunch of Phony Liberal Minded Eco Terrorists with Paul Watson being the biggest idiot of them all.
-
Deal with 'em they way you would ANY pirates. The way I understand it, they are operating in international waters so.......If I were part of the whaling fleet, I would be taking some more drastic action. I know that even though I don't support whaling, I would support any action they took to defend their business. Especially against these clowns.
-
appears they have 'acquired' a newer high tech speedy show boat that probably doesn't do well in Antarctic weather. hope the retards sink it the first day. a little more bad publicity would be good.

When the Whaling ship is bearing down on them they can hold up a sign that says ;
" Let's make a deal"

Perhaps the Japs will torpedo them? One can only hope. Didn't they ram some high dollar boat they had last year? I put these buffoons into the same category as these idiot's. Save The Gay Whales Of Darfur! ;D Bill T.

I like that these idiots got run over. I have no problem with protest, but as soon as you get stupid and impede people going about their LAWFUL business, you have crossed the line and deserve anything you get. This also goes back to Tom's question about why the normal people have to be the tolerant ones.

I have never figured out how they can throw acid on a harpon ship with out getting a harpon in the ass. If i was the harpon ship they would try that once. I would take the the acid as a lethal threat. I would look at disabilinb my ship in the same way. if your ship is disabled out there, it could cost you your life.

dude, it's Antarctica, if someone isn't there to pick you up, you WILL die. excuse me, the eco terrorists will die. ;)
put 'em in the water! I've been in 3 degree (celsius) water for a survival course. had a survival suit on, but it was still COLD!!!! takes your breath away. maybe they would like a crash course in water survival as well?

Here's a question for phil and sledge. Why does Australia permit these idiots to dock there? I know they are opposed to whaling. Most folks are, me included. But these idiots just make trouble for the Australian Navy and have the potential to create an incident with Japan when people inevitably get killed. Wouldn't it just be easier to deny them entry?

There shouldn't be a port in the world that welcomes those terrorists.

the country they are really making trouble for is what ever nation they are registered with. It was the dutch, but I have no idea where they register thier ships now.

If thats not proof that dope is bad for you, I don't know what is...
reality for the dutch its a simple question. Is the money/ ethics they are getting from the boats being registered with them worth the headache that comes from thier actions? Thats a question that only the dutch can anwser. I can tell you if they were registered in the US, the USCG would have throw every single one of those MOFO is jail.
-
They would just register them in Panama or Liberia. There is minimal, if any liability involved for the Country of registry for the actions of the crew as long as the VESSEL conforms to international standards (More or less) If the Ship is compliant then it simply becomes a matter of whether or not to accept the registration fee.
TAB may have been a CG officer but I ask On what charges ? their actions are not in American waters so the Coasties have no jurisdiction.
Heck, I remember when a Soviet sailor jumped on board a USCG Cutter off the coast here back in the 70's begging for asylum, the heroic Coasties allowed members of the Soviet crew to come aboard the Cutter, beat the crap out of him and drag him back.

Wrong, the USCG has juristiction and is responsible for thier safety, no matter where they are. The are also responsible for the safety of navel ships. As far as the soviet deal, I don't know the details of it.
As far as charges, the list is a mile long. every thing from illegal dumping, to poor seamenship and every thing inbetween.
Every single time they have had a crash, the guys on watch and/or the captain could have been held responsible.
Trust me the USCG does not play fair and they have more search and seizure power then anyone execpt a US marshel, in prosute of a fugative.
If you are driving a officer has to have a reason to pull you over, he can't search your car with out reason/warrent. If you are registered in the US or are in US water ways, the USCG does not need a reason to stop you or search your vessel, legally they can do it at will.

As to the rest of your post TAB, They are NOT in US waters, and they are not US registered, so CG would not be able to do much beyond call them bad names.
It's one place the French have showed the way. (Of course they got cocky and got caught, but they were on the right track )

My Google-Fu is strong tonight ;D

You are 100% right, we can't touch them unless, they are in our waters, near our registered vessels or come close to navel ship...
Which is why they are not registered here, I said if they were, they would be fooked.

With our Justice Dept? You gotta be kidding?
Well, maybe if they didn't grease the right palms, then they might be fooked.

My Brother spent 8 years in the Coast Guard. and yes, what TAB say is true. US registered vessels are subject to search and seizure any time or place. my Brother was involved in seizures from Alaska to Panama. and nobody to stop them. (the USCGC Midgett)
one reason there is so little American flagged ships anymore, they can't operate without some bureaucrat trying to make a name and burning companies for trumped up charges. (yes, it is hard to believe, but it's true)

Heck, with this administration they would probably get some kind of award.
They may be getting Govt. grants anyway.
-
The biggest reason people don't register the ships in the US is....
wait for it...
envromental laws.

The ethics here are a bit tricky. One could argue that the whalers deserve whats coming. You could say the same about the whale huggers. To me, it boils down to the fact that no animal is worth a human life and these idiots are instigating it. The larger point is that they are putting others in danger, chiefly the Aussie and NZ navy and coast guards. If it were eco freaks versus whalers? Ask me if I give a damn. They deserve each other. Its when they make problems for others that I have issues. It seems the Dutch ought to clue in on this. Let tham register in Liberia like everyone else. It would make things easier. ;D

FQ, the Japanese are whaling under the provisions of international treaties. They are in COMPLIANCE with the law.
The Eco terrorists on the other hand are just looking for publicity.

I fully agree. They have the right of way. I'm just dealing with the ethical question. As it stands, the Japs win. I just get the lack of sympathy. Still, as I said, the whale huggers are the instigators here.

The only thing that really bugs me about the entire deal is that they claim they are whaling for research, then they sell the meat for a profit.
If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, its a duck.
I don't have a prob with them whaling for profit as long as they do so in a reasonable manor.( you know not striping the oceans of every living thing like the japanese do with every thing esle) I don't have a prob with them killing whales for research.
Where I draw the line is calling comm'l whaling research.
-
FQ, I think you miss understood me. Japan is allowed by UN treaties to take X number of whales per year.
TAB, As I remember it they had to word the treaty that way to get it past some of the tree hugger countries like France, the actual reason that was given was something about Culture and traditional foods .
-
This ins't tradional hunting.
we are talking half dozen or so ships, qoutas of 1000+ and the use of modern tools to hunt and kill the whales.
whale meat is not that tradionally in japan, atleast not in the scale it is now. I mean maybe a few villages here and there, but to go half way accross the globe, is a bit of a strech.

True. As far as tradition? I read an excellent book about an Indian tribe in upper Washington State that got a licence to go whaling in the '90s. They did it old school. Cedar canoe, harpoon, and some brave bastrd to jump overboard and sew the the things mouth shut before it sank so they could tow it home. Thats traditional! (and a whole lot more hard core than I'll ever be ;D).
FQ13 I'll try to remember the book title. It really is worth a read.
-
Sorry deepwater. I guess my post wasnt clear. I was trying to say the crew of the japanese shipse should make sure they make it home and not the eco-nuts.
-
The book I referenced previously was "A Whale Hunt" by Robert Sullivan. It describes a few members of the Makah tribe going out to kill a gray whale from a canoe in 1999. If you like history, hunting, the outdoors or just plain weirdness, its worth a read.

All the publicity generates mega bucks which they fund other eco terrorist groups like ALF and the tree spiking crazies.

I understand, what I mean to say is that the eco-terrorists are stupid doing what they do because if they go in the water as they almost did with their high tech trimaran they could very likely die. it's cold enough to freeze to death in a few minutes. remember, the Japs have tonnage over the retards.

To get right down to the bones of the matter. Meat is meat and I don't care if it is the form of whales, Deer, Elk or cattle for that matter.
It is hypocritical to pass judgement and condemn a nation whose culture is based around eating certain types of meat just because our own is based around a different view point.
Whales are animals and as a species while their numbers may be declining...in truth not one person on this planet knows just how the species is fairing.
So very little of the oceanic environment has been explored by man and there is so much that is still unknown about the migration of even this the largest species of animal left on the planet.
If Japan suddenly anounced that European Nations, United States and others whose culture revolves around eating Beef, Chicken etc...would have to stop. How do you think these nations would react?
And if a radical group of Extreme Zealots popped up and started what is nothing short of Teroristic actions in an attempt to stop them from harvesting these animals...how long would it be before there would be bloodshed over it?
It is already illegal in Missouri for the Anti-hunting groups to harrass a hunter while searching for game and arrests have ben made in the last few years over this...Japan is acting legally under a banner of Scientific research. Like it or not the international community has allowed them to do so.
The Sea Shepherds are Terrorists and it will be the best episode Animal Planet has ever aired the day the Japanese fleet tires of these tactics and sends a harpoon through the Steve Irwin just below the waterline.
