Title: The natives are getting restless.
Post by: TAB on November 25, 2010, 05:43:44 PM
Still about 45 mins go.  Deep frying for the 1st time this year.

I think I'm going to have to arm myself to keep the poachers out of the kitchen.

Deep fried Turkey can create "junkies" worse than meth heads.... it goes back a long way,...just offer them another cocktail, and remember, it's the Holidays....

You can't kill them literally, just with kindness.... ::)

Decided to smoke it this year and got pretty pissed.  Started at 0900 and ate at 1500 and it wasn't completely done.  Looks like it didn't defrost all the way.  20 min in the oven finished it off though.  Next year I may smoke for a few hours then fry to finish it off.  Once it was done it tasted awesome.  Brined in apple juice and spices, peach/chipotle rub, then smoked with cherry wood.

You better have a better excuse than that for when it's TEOTWAWKI!  LMAO!  ::)

Keep eating them fried foods and they will not be around for you to kill, with kindness or otherwise.

I was shocked, during dessert th FIL told me for the 1st time, I was the right man for sarah.  He was also shocked at the quality of work I actually do.  They had not seen any of the work I've done to this house.  The inlayed floor wow them and the bathroom blew them away.   So much so they want me to come do thiers, at the going rate. I may have to take them up on that offer.

Up until today he has always though I was dumb for not using my degree and that I was a no skill hack of a contractor.  Granted they had never seen my work and only knew I worked on old homes.  They also spent a couple hours going thru some of my albums of work pics.

TAB, you could be my cousin!  He does finish carpentry and etc. with scarce and exotic materials and I didn't even know he had the skills!  His dad hardly ever praised him for them even though he knew...what a shame.  Glad your FIL knows now.

Some times it's more satisfying this way TAB.  ;D
The "Holy sh*t ! You did THAT?"  ;D

Some people think I'm a fool for not having an office job, I quit a business course to take vocational training, but I get satisfaction from making things, even if it is no mind repetitive manufacturing, that I could never get from adding up columns of numbers.

Went that route myself. After a business degree I decided sitting in an office wasn't what I wanted after all. At the time there were more (and better paying) opportunities in the hands-on tech and industrial fields.

I smoke my bird about two hours and then finish it off in the oven. It takes about four to five hours to cook a 15# turkey including smoking. The smoking seals the skin and they come out real juicy. So fare people have liked it better than the deep fried birds they have had.

Dude, You've posted pictures of some of your "construction", the word does not exactly do justice to the work.   :o

Actually to tie the slight drift (we are good) in with the original gist of the thread, people who can build/construct usable tools and equipment with minimal/simple supplies will be a valuable asset in a long-term SHTF situation.
For example, since we were talking about frying turkeys, if you had a large supply of LP gas, how many folks out there can fabricate a homemade gas burner/heater from scratch (not hard at all with simple tools and supplies)?

Some of us just are never going to be suit and tie folk, myself included. Taking a heap of wires, a notepad, a schematic, and someone else's very expensive toy, and "lighting it up",...is a great feeling.

My Father had such "plans" for me in Finance, but respects me more (now), for going my own way and making a career out of it.

Somehow my Business Mgt. degree still has merit on larger refits, and projects. But working with a 480v, 3Phase megayacht, and making it "light up, pump and run" makes me smile. ;D

and they never quibble about the bill... ::)

Me too, when I was laid off last year i took an office job for awile. It drove me nuts sitting in front of a computer all day. Everyone thought I was crazey to go back to my old job. But I like the physical work.
