Title: Attention Veterans!
Post by: Timothy on December 03, 2010, 07:28:33 PM
Watch your six...

Forwarded by Kevin Secor, VSO Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

An organization called Veterans Affairs Services (VAS) is providing benefit and general information on VA and gathering personal information on veterans. This organization is not affiliated with VA in any way. http://www.vaservices.org/us/index.html

VAS may be gaining access to military personnel through their close resemblance to the VA name and seal. Our Legal Counsel has requested that we coordinate with DoD to inform military installations, particularly mobilization sites, of this group and their lack of affiliation or endorsement by VA to provide any services.

In addition, GC requests that if you have any examples of VAS acts that violate chapter 59 of Title 38 United States Code, such as VAS employees assisting veterans in the preparation and presentation of claims for benefits, please pass any additional information to Mr. Daugherty at the address below.

Thank you for the heads up Tim.
There are people that will scam any one, like vultures, but there is also the possibility of a Govt agency, the VA taking a vindictive action against groups that are forcing them to do their job.
I would be extremely leery of "VAS", but I will also reserve judgment until more information is available from a neutral party.
As always with unknown groups, let the buyer beware !

No argument here Tom...

I trust the Government about as far as I can pee and the older I get, the less pressure is developed!

They tell me 1/2 a Viagra will let you get clear of your boots    ;D
My distrust of Govt  is why I posted what I did, but I would still advise every one to use extreme caution dealing with that group, at least until more info becomes available.

Excellent heads-up.  Awhile back we had a story in the local paper about a Navy Veterans Association and how it turned out to be totally bogus.  But, that organization was just defrauding contributors and not soliciting vet's information to do who knows what.

This organization MAY actually be on the side of the vets and the VA may be p-o'd that they are being forced to do their jobs.  There are a number of organizations doing that, and many are totally on the up and up.  Still, it's good advice to keep your eyes open and your wallet shut with most of these groups.

I won't donate money to anyone over the phone, never have.  Send me the paperwork, I'll do the research and if it's legit, I'll send a money order.  Fraternal order of anything ain't get too far with me.

I donate to charity, VA associations and the like....I wish I could do more sometimes but like anything else, it's all in the timing.

I have dozens of old friends who managed to get their 20 or 30 years in and are having a hard time understanding why Vets and Retirees are getting the shaft on "promised" health benefits, COLA increases and other extended benefits promised to them for a lifetimes service.
