My answer is 14
• Carry Gun –This is your choice in Make, Model and Caliber, but I believe the more common the easier it will be to find gear/parts for and the more it will be accepted by a DA/jury
• Competition Gun – This should work the same as your carry gun and be in the same family. Some examples might be a G19 and a G34, SR9c and an SR40, Two 1911 style pistols.
• A small pocket carry gun – This is a “what you carry when you can’t carry a gun” gun or a BUG. It could be an LCP, PM9, J-frame et cetera.
• Revolver – if your carry/competition or BUG guns are revolvers, this can be skipped. But everyone needs 1 revolver.
• A .22lr – This is good for plinking, practice and fun, but to me the importance is have a cheap shooting, unintimidating gun to introduce new shooters with.
If you are only interested in concealed carry and pistols you can stop here. If you are looking for long gun defensive options you need…
• A .20 gauge or larger shotgun – For home defense I would recommend an Remington 1100 or 11-87 as they will live inside. If you are a SHTF type a Mossburg 500/590 or a Remington 870 are the standards
If you are interested in rifle marksmanship then you should look to the following…
• An AR pattern rifle in .223 – This is America’s rifle and if you are looking to this post for guidance, any of them will suit your needs.
• A bolt action rifle in .270 or better – In NA .270 will take any game animal and will allow you to hunt if you wish. I choose .308 because it is a standard military caliber and easy to standardize on.
• A Ruger 10/22 – This is only Brand/Model listed as must have. It is the most wide spread .22lr ever made and its magazine allows for reliable feeding.
If you are counting at this point you are thinking, that only makes 9, why did he say 14? These are my personal additions
• 1911 – I carry a Glock and I believe everyone needs a 1911, after all JMB did bring it down from on high.
• Heirlooms – My father is a retired LEO and has given me the BUG he carried for around 20 years. I am also hoping to get his final carry gun in the future. He also gave me my first center fire rifle, it isn’t something I would have bought myself, nor would I ever sell it.
• Any other sporting guns – For me I would like to have a nice over-under, this is where I would count cowboy action or 3-gun specific gear.
I am not saying these are the only guns you should have. Currently I have 2 guns that I don’t shoot, don’t expect to ever shoot and would glad sell to fill one of the must have spots, but I don’t consider myself a collector, they look pretty is a completely acceptable reason to me.
How far off do you think I am? Or alternatively, have you every thought about your response to this question?
-
The question is blasphemous! ;)
-
this ought to be good
-
Need is the wrong word, it should be want.
I don't need any, I want a bunch.
-
Your list of 14 is a good one and will do the jobs your asking and fits your need, it really is an individual thing.
But you can NEVER have to many guns!! ;D
-
You are forgetting a good quality spring piston magnum airgun. Too many "gun guys" ignore them. This is foolish. They are fun, accurate, quiet, cheap to shoot (you can practice in the back yard) and if you buy a high velocity .177 or better yet .22, will put small game on the table. They cost less than pennies to shoot, are accurate as hell ,and personally, I think your battery is incomplete without one. Thoughts?

Thats not ture... you can have too many guns, but really thats only do to the lack of safe space. ;D

No, the answer to how many guns you want is a bunch. The answer to how many do you need is based on your use, which is why I broke them into groups.
I was also careful to show multiple non-utilitaring based reasons that add guns to my must have list and to call out that "its pretty" is an acceptable reason for a collector (which you are if it isn't a tool).

I would argue you bought the wrong sized safe.
-
The question should be as follows. How many guns do you want and can afford?
-
The question is blasphemous! ;)
I'm with Haz, Shooter32 and Tab on this. Blasphemous!
Besides you hardly scratched the surface. Beyond the practical self-defense and hunting applications, there are at least a couple of dozen variations of handguns needed for all the competitions out there. There's at least 10 guns needed for handgun silhouette and 6 more needed for USPSA and a couple more for IDPA. Then there's Bullseye, steel, cowboy and Olympic. And that's just the beginning. Why heck an all around skeet shooter probably going to NEED at least 4 or 5 shotguns. And we haven't talked about backups. You don't pay $250 (or more) to shoot a big match and not take a backup do you?
You want to play the "NEED" game, they don't make enough guns for what I need.
-
How many guns ............. and can afford?
I'm following the example set by our esteemed POTUS. "Afford" doesn't enter into the picture. Debt, be damned.
-
How many do I need?
I need...
...all of them.
-
I would argue you bought the wrong sized safe.
I'm a 3 safe household
this is the smallest of the 3
http://www.libertysafe.com/build_color.php?pg_id=13
The other 2 are a older cannon and the OG safe from the river city bank down town. It was made in 1903 its ~6'x3'x5' and is 2.5 tons.
I have room fro about 3 more long guns and maybe a doze or so hand guns. I normally buy 3-5 guns a year. its only been the last 2 that I've been off that number.

Back to the thread, eg, what do you need for a battery,
I think the OP was pretty much on track. Personally, I'm a hunter first and the SD stuff was second. I've called myself a tactical FUDD before (someone complained, though I don't know why?). Honestly, my "must haves" have to deal with ruining the day of small woodland creatures. The SD bit consists of a couple of Glocks, a maverick riot gun and an AR. Still, the basic list seems complete. I would say that I do try to multi task. My .270 Bambi slayer will ruin your whole day at 300 yards, and my SxS bird guns are one hacksaw away from being major felonies and damn scary from across the room. As I grow the collection, I hope to keep this in mind. Buy a gun for a job, hunting in my case, but always make sure it will work in an SHTF scenario. Its the main reason I try to buy standard calibers, even if they are not as good as the latest whizbang. I've come to beleive that if I can't easily and cheaply find ammo for it, I don't want it, even if I do put less than 100 rounds per year through it.

I'll take another 1911 for $500, Alex,....
The "ONE" you have with you, when you need it the most.

The vualt deal is not a option for me. This house is small enough now, Until times are better or my wife pays off her student loan there is no really chance of us getting abigger place/ building a house.

Back to the thread, eg, what do you need for a battery,
Nope. Nope. Not the question asked. We've had discussions about what minimal guns might suffice in various scenarios. What Buckeye (and why isn't that Tarheel? I thought Buckeyes were Ohio?) asked without qualification was "How many guns do you need". Period. Wide open topic. No limit was given. No "battery". No basic set. No starter set. No minimal set or expenditure was asked.
And regardless, of how many the time and situation permits me to have, to carry, to haul, to store or to buy, I'd still "need" more.
I'm not a revolver man. No sir-ee. Hate cleaning all those chambers. (The HR 999 is the pits to clean.) But I'm picking up 2 new ones tomorrow and another one next week. Why? Cause I "needed" them. They called out to me.
"Hi. My name is Alf. And I'm a gun-aholic." I feel so inadequate with only one safe.
-
The word "need" is the $65,000 word here.
Need for what?
When I read or hear a question like that, my brain automatically focuses on the literal (?) spin and look at it from the angle of need for the bare essentials.
IMHO, everyone who is a capable citizen should have at a minimum:
A- 1 ea. 12ga preferably a pump
B- 1 ea. .22 lr handgun
C- 1 ea. .22 lr rifle
D- 1 ea. major caliber handgun
E- 1 ea. major caliber rifle (.30 cal)
These, with the requisite ammo supply, should fill any basic necessity related to firearms.
Anything above that would fall into more of a "want" category and IMHO, there is no end to the list of wants. ;D
-
I need one of everything so I can test them and sort out the ones I don't really need!

My short answer: All of them!
Buggin' out has nothing to do with your collection. When it's bugout time you have to choose...

You don't bugout if you have a "secret bunker". 8)

What's NEED got to do with anything?

I need them all!!! ;D
-
I have 1- 24 gun safe and 1- 32 gun safe full. Keep in mind that scoped and extended bolt action rifles take up extra space. IF I get back the one's I loaned out to family, I will need another 2 safes for them and the weapons yet to be bought. Yesterday I bought 2 more hipoint carbines and 2 Pistols that are not in those 2 safes but a small utility (Cheap) safe downstairs in my "War and Bar room" area by my SHTF gear.
So many toys and not enough money !
I want to add at least:
1 M1 Garand
1 AK 47
1 AK 74
several more Moisons
a few more Mausers.

+1. If the B.S. from the large M1 shipment being held up by Sec. State, Hillary, to another AK-47 for me, and I just got another Mauser, and J&G always has a deal on another Moisin...
too many guns, I don't have yet, and not enough money. I still keep waiting for Santa to bring me a Barrett,... :-\
I look at it this way,,,,,One day my great(and great great)-grandchildren, will say "Holy Crap" :o Everything from my Winchesters, to Mausers, to Black Rifles, AK's, to shotguns, to handguns. Good to leave the offspring well prepared. It's an American Tradition, and the 2nd Amend. keeps it that way for all of us.
"Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man gainst his own bosom. Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American.... [T]he unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people."
(Tench Coxe, The Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.)
