Title: Hey ladies, I need some help.
Post by: TAB on December 11, 2010, 07:25:15 PM
Neckless lenght, which is better  17", 18" or 19"?

In this case its for a pendent.  the pendent is about 1.25" in lenght if that makes a diffrence.

Is there any way I can determine which lenght I need with out totally giving it away?

If I get your question, necklace length for a 1.25" pendant.?  Keep perspective, some women have a Sophia Loren "long neck". Some have a Jessica Alba "shorter" neck,...

For a 1.25" pendant the proper "length" for a pendant should just come to top section of the cleavage. Think of a plunging neckline dress, the pendant should "hang" in the happy zone.

Take it from me and a well endowed wife. ::) Measure one of her current necklaces and apply the math for the pendant.

;D If the length is right,....well the picture works.,.... ;)

Neckless is bad, any day of the week........even with nice boobies.  :o

Just busting your chops a little.......  ;D  ;D

In all seriousness, with my wife, I've always based it on the type of top it will most often be worn with and set the pendant to lie centered in the open space if it is worn with a plunge-type neckline. If it is a crew-type neckline, nearly any length will work, but TW's advice works well on that for either style.

If she wants a pearl necklace she will say so, some women are funny that way.

I'd say go with the 18 inch length.
There's probably a reason it's "happy medium".

I found a pendent that matchs her tennis braclet I got her a couple years back.  Its the 1st one I've ever found that does.  Its vintage, from some time in the teens.( traded work for it)   The neckless that is with it is broke,  Its nothing fancy just a very simple white gold chain. Figured I'd get one so she can actually wear it.

White Gold is becoming more popular, "what is old is new again",.....it has always been a very good base for jewelry. Based on the price of gold lately, not a bad thing.

Never underestimate good silver also.  I have to get my wife "tough" jewelry, her delicate chains and stuff always seem to end up at the jewelers for repair. :-\

I've never been a fan of yellow gold.

It makes my wife react anyways and it turns green( not that uncommon)  white gold does not.

she really can't wear jewelry to work anyways.  It would just end up in her locker.  its why we bought 2 wedding bands, a cheap one that she wears to work that is about a half size too big and the real one.

If gold jewelry makes your skin turn green it's because it's really copper. You got ripped off if you thought it was pure gold.

One of the most important features of gold to the ancients, basically the original source of its value was it's purity and any and all forms of corrosion.
Many cultures even believed that eating small amounts of powdered gold would pass these attributes on to people, protecting them from diseases and poisons.
Allergies I don't know about, but if a piece of jewelry turns your skin green it is either as Frank mentioned, brass plated copper, or it has a very low percentage of actual gold in the alloy.

even 24 karart is not pure gold, its 99.9%   For it to be legally sold as pure gold it must be 99.997%  which you never see in jewelry

18k is about 75%  12 is about 50%

Some people react to 24k, others don't.  It can be the same piece of jewelry.   my wife does, she has a neckless she got from her parents, bugs the hell out of  her, she gave it to her sister and she is fine with it.

The acid test ( where the name came from)  is you take a small ammount of shavings from the piece and react it with a acid, if it bubbles its not 24k.

the plated stuff is a completly diffrent animal.

white gold can only be 22k  its about 90% gold and 10% nickel, some people react to the nickle, just like some do with the copper.

Goldschläger shots for me and my men!  (for medicinal purposes only, of course)

If my wife had a bad reaction to gold, I wouldn't be able to resist asking if litmus paper burst into flames when she touched it.  ;D ;D

Your wife may have an iron deficiency causing the green or dark staining of her skin.

I've never been a fan of yellow gold.

It makes my wife react anyways and it turns green( not that uncommon)  white gold does not.

24kt gold is completely non-reactive.  You've been giving your darling bride the cheap stuff 10kt or 14kt that is mixed with a fair amount of copper--that's where you are getting the reaction.  White gold (the "real" white gold) is mixed with a percentage of nickle, a relatively hard, relatively non-reactive metal.  Be careful about making a purchase of white gold however, as many jewelry companies are simply plating traditional yellow gold (10 or 14kt) with rhodium, and that will wear off in relatively short order and your bride will have that unwanted reaction.  Jared has recently been sued for that practice in the Phoenix area.  I cannot imagine that it's an isolated practice.  If you get yellow gold in 18kt, you should have no problems with reactions (other than thankful appreciation).  Good luck.

As to necklace length, the short length is called a choker and is good for most casual wear.  The longer length is considered more elegant and should be worn with low decolletage.  The mid range (18") is the all-around choice and is suitable for casual and elegant wear.  Good luck, again, and Merry Christmas.

And don't calll us "ladies."

Post by: crusader rabbit on December 12, 2010, 10:18:48 AM
Just another thought or two...  The reason the shops are selling rhodium plated yellow for white is that white gold is much harder to work.  The nickle makes it tougher to cast (requires higher temperatures) and harder to clean-up the castings because the casting marks are tougher to eradicate.  It's also a bit tougher to solder.  And, it's a great deal harder to set stones in white gold because it is harder and less malleable.  Bead-setting small stones is really tough with white gold.

On the bright side of the equation, genuine white gold is an excellent choice for rings and other "high-wear" jewelry just because it is so darned tough.  It will outwear yellow gold nearly two-to-one.

I'm gonna agree with the Rabbit...

24K Gold is WAY too soft for fine jewelry.

Gold jewelry in the 10 and 14K variety is "Sears and Roebuck" gold where as 18K is much more elegant and used in higher end jewelry.  I'm lucky in the jewelry department, my lovely bride prefers Silver and birthstones, she traded in her engagement ring, a cheap Kay's 1/4carat diamond for something she really liked!

I've never bought her another diamond and probably never will.  She doesn't even wear her 18K gold wedding ring.  She wears her mothers white gold set.   Good white gold is 90% gold and 10% nickel.

Just like a man..~~ when ladies are called in.. what do you do??  Jump in the middle of it and start blabbing away..
sigh~~~(http://www.cascity.com/howard/forum/earsoffmoose.gif)
I have all lengths of jewelery.. One size doesn't fit all.. It depends on what she is wearing it with.. If I have a high necked garment.. I like a little longer..about the middle of my chest bone. I personally tend to like my necklaces high.. closer to my neck between the collar bone.
But I have... Uhmmmm large boobs.. so when I wear low cut stuff I don't want the necklace almost laying between or on top of them.
once again.. with women and things like this,., it is ALWAYS personal preference..
What necklace does she wear a lot that you can look at?  Go by that size.
men are generally one size fits most.. and women are just the opposite.. What one woman likes you can put your money on the table that the one sitting next to her will hate it. LOL

Its just the way we are.   :-\

For a really nice necklace try a 1911 with a lanyard ring. Practical, visible, and deadly. If your worried about her getting a "reaction", get one in polished Stainless.   Bill T.

Easy solution.

Check out all the lengths she has then get her a chain to match the pendant in each of the lengths she has, adjusted for pendant length.

Can't miss.

Might be expensive, but there is no way you will convince anyone that this woman isn't worth it.

Here in Arizona we just got rid of the stupid "No booze before 10:00 AM on Sunday" law. I've never understood the issue of when you buy booze. Wal-Mart here won't sell ammo before 8:00 AM either. I guess they want the booze to wear off first?  ???   Bill T.

I moved here back in '82, it's always been that way.  The bar and restaurant owners lobbied the state and got the law passed because liquor store sales were cutting into their bottom line.  As best I can tell, it's always promoted "driving under the influence" in the state.  Connecticut has a three strike rule on DUI, one year mandatory for the third strike and it's a felony as well which I don't necessarily disagree with.

I place into the "dumb ass law" category...

Never understood state liquor laws,....

NC "very conveniently" changed it's blue laws on beer sales from 1:00 to 12:00 on Sunday, when the Carolina Panthers got to the NFL,
seemed tailgating revenue, outweighed saving souls...

yet in Baltimore, MD, you can get a 1/2 gallon of whatever Christmas morning at 6:00 a.m. from Abdul at the local liquor store.

Drive thru liquor stores here in Fl.  ???

Old Religion inspired law.  Close the taverns and more folks show up at church....and since they aren't spending the money on booze, it can go into the collection basket.

Similar law was how the Ice Cream Sundae got it's name.

It was originally called the Sunday and was aimed at the after church crowd.  Churches noted that their collection take was reduced because folks were holding out a bit so the family could have a Sunday at the ice cream parlor together.

The solution was to get a law outlawing the sale of an ice cream treat named Sunday.  Non-separation of Church and State at work.

The ice cream parlors simply changed the name to circumvent the law.

Seems the politicians realized they would likely end up with dozens of confections outlawed by name and didn't enact any further laws with that aim.

The thread has already been hijacked, so might as well sit back and enjoy the flight.....

There used to be a bar near here named the State Line Bar.

It straddled the Ohio/Indiana border and reportedly (I've never visited the place) had a line painted down the middle of the bar denoting the location of the state line.

Ohio law made serving or drinking alcohol illegal after 2:00 am.

At just before 2am patrons of that bar simply walked a few feet to the other end of the bar and continued whatever they had been doing in Ohio.

A law was enacted outlawing establishments that served alcohol from straddling the state line.  I assume it was more aimed at tax revenue than stopping the drinker migration. Indiana has cheaper booze prices than Ohio.

I believe the 2AM law is still in effect.

I figure someday I will open the North Pole Bar.  It will be in a circle surrounding the North Pole.   At any given time some seats will be in a legal drinking zone.   Maybe make the bar inside rotating to save the patrons the concern of checking their watches and picking the correct seat.

I find any law that makes an action illegal 60 seconds in the future or 6 inches distant suspect.
