Title: How Much .22 Rimfire Ammo Do You Consume In A Year ?
Post by: billt on December 14, 2010, 09:24:03 AM
I ask this because I was surprised to find that for me it was much lower than I had expected. I did an inventory since this time last year and found I have only used up about 1,200 rounds total. My guess would have been more than that. Mind you this includes several hundred rounds I put through my J Frame S&W Model 63 that I thought I was having an issue with, that turned out to be nothing but a cleaning issue.

Normally I go through much more. Or at least I thought I did. How about you guys? I can remember in the 70's going out with a bunch of friends and it was nothing to burn through 1,500 rounds in one setting. I can remember cleaning my Ruger 10/.22 and Marlin Model 60 with a paint brush and Kerosene, and the coffee can was filthy black after I washed them out. We bought whatever ammo was on sale.

 I remember one time we were shooting at this pond when a Muskrat swam up on shore. All of us opened up on it at the same time, pulling our pistols when the rifles went empty. We shot at that thing until there were no chunks of it large enough to hit! Today my .22 consumption is way down compared to those days. I may have to do something about that.  Bill T.

I don't have the exact number but I estimate 3,400 rounds:

500 rounds for each winter league, and I shoot in three;
250 for each summer league, and I shoot in two;
Practice between league nights (winter) 200 rounds;
Practice between league nights (summer) 200 rounds;
Fun plinking, rabbits and skunks 1,000 rounds.

That isn't exact, but based on what I know I buy each year it should be pretty damn close.

I would guess about 1000 to 1500 not counting what my grandson shoots when he is here.
The number is going to go up because I just bought some metal silhouette targets and several other active targets. Plus, I have not counted what my wife shoots in her revolver.
I bought a variety of the expensive target stuff just to see what my Browning Left Handed T bolt is capable of. Haven't shot it yet with the target loads but it does just fine with CCI and the cheap bulk pack Federal and Remington stuff. Hunting season has interfered with trips to the range. I would rather get warm following my English setter than freezing my butt at the bench. [Actually my club has a heated place to shoot from, but you get the idea. It was 8 this morning with a minus something wind chill.]

On another note my Sig Mosquito is running fine now. The secret is to put a drop of oil in the hole at the right of the slide in addition to keeping it wet while shooting. But now Sig has a deal on .22 conversion kits -- tempting as I begin to run low on 9mm.

Your consumption was much higher than mine. I rarely shoot rimfire anymore.
Now if you had said shotgun or centerfire pistol....

12,000+

That's for the family.  The 4 of us shoot at least 550 rounds nearly every weekend spring, summer, and fall.  In the winter it's only 500 to 1000 a month.

How much? Not enough!!!

Should change that now that I have the Marlin 60 and a lovely indoor range to shoot it in. Minus 12 Monday morning BTW.

Enjoy.

Roughly about 2000 to 2500 per year, but then I only shoot on average every 2-3 weeks.  :-\
Need more time shooting and less time working.

About 50 last year......but the gun is 107 years old!

So in dog years that's, um....carry the 3, multiply by 10 to the 3rd x pi, divide by the metric tonne and add 2...

yup, about 50.....

I'm trying to remember who said it, but the quote is "You can tell a lot about a shooter by the .22 in his rack."

I'm working on it.....but, in the last few months, I've spent 2 large on my dog and another 1.5K on a root canal along with about 800 bucks to register two cars and get CT licenses for me and my lovey...

I'm tapped out!

My wife and I are buying each other heating oil for Christmas and are thankful for it....some folks won't have that..

So fill us in.   Which model tells what?

Pistols:  I've got a Ruger MK I  (That's ONE).  An H&R 999.  And a recently added a Buck Mark Contour URX.

Rifles:  Winchester 77 and a Ruger 10/22 Varmint.  (Does a CZ 452 in .17HM2 also count?)

For me it will be an Anschutz 2013, but that goal was moved earlier this year.  I shot my first one in Arizona, and have been planning ever since.

My main shooter has actually moved back to the 10/22 after selling my Winchester in prep for the next step up.  I added a Savage 93 in .17HMR to the rimfire mix, and anticipate a similar move in .22lr as well.  The two Ruger Mark III's are still here and used in matches.  May upgrade those at some point, but they are tack drivers and I'm not yet  ;)

~ 1000.

I've not had the cash to go shooting latly.  every thing I've made has been side jobs or me trading work for XXXXX.

The closetist range is about 30 miles.  luckly there is a sporting clays range not far, but unless your a member of the country club( or a guest)  its $$$$$$
